Each car had its own personality. The Laser was more contemporary. The black car in this video looked just like my mother’s former car, minus the turbo, but had an automatic transmission with the 2.0l engine. Fun car to drive and very reliable.

I agree. I bought a brand new ‘92 Eagle Talon TSi, fwd, which had 195 hp. It was a blast to drive but I didn’t care for the automatic seatbelt. I was able to keep up with my cousins ‘86 Corvette which had ten more hp. He wasn’t happy about that. Plus, his Vette was an automatic.

The automatic shoulder belts didn’t bother me; this was during the era of “passive restraint systems,” and I liked it because it made those who refused to buckle up to wear their seatbelts. My first car, a Maui Blue Eclipse GS Turbo. It was like driving the future: picked it up in Dec '88 even though it was a '90. It was the 3rd one ever sold in NJ. What a fun car. Torque steer was insane though.

i used to sell the eclipse's, the GSX was an incredible car for it's time, with the 5 spd, once you hit 2nd gear it was over, had wonderful handling..we were easily getting between $ 5-10 K over MSRP.

Sixteen inch wheels on a small coupe must have seemed HUGE back in 1989? I remember about the 2000s I was gobsmacked when magazines started reviewing SUVs with nineteen inch standard wheels. These days in the UK you can get that size of wheel on a small hatchback, and not even a top of the range one at that! I remember some version of the Eclipse was a pretty great starter car in the first Gran Turismo!

The Mitsu Eclipse is still sexy looking after so many decades, and look at that 0-60 time, that's better than so many cars today! Sadly Mitsubishi is in major decline here in America dropping the Evo and the current eclipse is bleh. OH well, they had their time to shine, even if they only sold 6k evos a year, that's still what generates hype for the Mitsubishi brand!

Mitsubishi was doomed for decades now. Subaru has always been faster than the Evo, at least with the non-USDM EJ20 engines. Not sure why we have the 2.5L mill in the states.

My friend had a Mitsu Eclipse (around the same year model as this one 89-91 area)..but It had *NO* Power Steering when he bought used on the cheap. Hince we dubbed it the *Sports Tank*..get a good arm/muscular workout and getting place to place pretty fast too!

I used to have an old Eagle Summit wagon (rebadged Expo LRV). I beat the crap out of that car and it did need quite a few repairs but it had loads of space for its size and it had excellent visibility. It was a freakin' beast in the snow, too. I finally had to junk it after the transmission failed at 187,000 miles.

I just ran across this video that took me down memory lane. I bought a brand new 1990 Eclipse GS (Red with Black Roof), in Jan 1990, and was my daily driver for 10 years and 145,000 miles. It still looked great, but had a blown head gasket. I sold it to a neighbor friend who fixed it, then sold it a year or so later...and heard it was totaled shortly thereafter.

The Laser/Talon/Eclipse trio were great cars that were very reliable and fun to drive. My mother had a Laser RS 2.0L non turbo with an automatic transmission, and it was a wonderful car. I wish Motorweek would test cars with an automatic transmission instead of manual transmissions…

Dude I had a '90 Laser RS. The thing was so sweet. Got 34mpg average and it hauled some ass. As a typical college student, I didn't take care of it and ended up grenading the engine from low (and old) oil. Very cool little car.

I kept mine maintained to the 9s - but the biggest mechanical drawback (apart from the automatic seatbelts which could jam over a half a dozen years) was the pop-up headlights. They needed dampers to keep the lights from failing early (which appeared to either be lacking or totally absent). I must have replaced both pairs at least 2X. At least it was easier and cheaper to replace myself vs having to take the entire front end off by a tech at the shop.

I was 15 when this debuted. I saw a prototype in a magazine at 14. Essentially, cosmetically except for the bigger wheels, the top line Laser RS Turbo which was NOT available in AWD when launched, looked like the base model Eclipse because of it's body colored roof and lack of rear spoiler, the Talon looked like it had taken steroids and was the brut of the trio. My mother had a 92 Eclipse GS 5 speed. I had a 1995 Galant 5 speed when she had her car. Yep, I know, backwards but given the trim levels we had, my car had 141 hp and hers only 92. And NO her was NOT the GS DOHC with the black roof, it had a body color roof. I know every detail about these cars. It was my dream car at 15. I'm 50 now and still adore it.

I special ordered a 1990 Laser turbo in early 1989 and received one of the first ones in my area. I ordered it with alum wheels, 5 speed, roll up windows. weighed 2710 with me in it. With a bleeder I got it to run a 14.4 at 101. It was a rocket. I later added a complete HKS upgrade, in the turbo controller(EVC) large turbo inlet pipes, a bigger stock location IC, gutted maf and the F-con add on to the ecm to control fuel. I also added a bigger fuel pump and Walker dyno max exhaust and no cat. The car was unbelievable fast. From a roll(NO traction with FWD) the car could run with 12 second cars. The clutch gave up at 20k miles. New Centerforce then the trans went at 30k miles. Actually gernaded the diff within the trans, and blew a hold in the side of the trans. . The wheel hop was horrible. I had the trans replaced under warranty and traded it in.. It went to western pa in 19995 or 96. Rasberry red with gray cloth interior. Left all the HKS on it too! lol, wonder where it went

I had a 93 gs non turbo 5sp. Loved that car. I worked at a Mits. dealership then. I had it in the shop while working. Made it easy to fix things. First was the head/valves timing, then the trans grinding. After about a year the trans and head problems came back. I got rid of it. Only had 60k on it. I still love that car and would still like to have one. lol I was a early 20 something and traded cars like underwear back then. :(

It’s 2AM on a Wednesday night at the races. A Plymouth Laser pulls into the parking lot. The driver walks up to the guy with the fastest car, an hooked up Viper. In a 1/4 mile, the Laser left that Viper the dust. It did have NO2 & a monster-sized Turbo but it was still still just a 4.

I had a 93 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. There were two things that really bothered me, those awful plastic moldings mounted on the doors. After a year of ownership, the plastic had a tendency of rubbing against the edge of front fender every time you open and close door. The other was the rigidity of the door panels. Those metal panels were ridiculously soft. One time I tried to remove a piece of dirt glued to the door with my finger. I didn't even use that much force but I left a dent on the most conspicuous spot of the door. It was a fun car nonetheless.

Owned a 1990 Eagle Talon 16v DOHC (not all wheel drive or turbo - more cargo that way). Matched the Toyota Celica for HP (at 130 or 135 on a light body platform) and much cheaper and more fun to drive. Still miss it. Plus I had relations working in Bloomington / Normal IL around the DSM plant. The Talon had a nice extended spoiler and a 2-tone roof-body finish not avail on the others. True story I got interested in the car after seeing the Misu ver when doing rounds as a meter maid in college (I saved students more money than charged them by my estimate) I gave priority to handicap parkers and firelanes mostly, but returned student IDs after radio-checks on which dorm they lived in - which cost 50 dollars to replace - in 1989 dollars. About 120 US dollars today (at least 4800 worth in total - and that's a low estimate). I must have returned at least 40 of those found in the snow during my rounds. Tickets were only 10 bucks. So the difference was staggering. I also saved a lot of stray pets from being pancaked by traffic calling them into animal control - and putting out feelers to the owners to check with the animal shelter for their pets. Point being, I saw a lot of really nice cars and made my first (purchased with my own cash) choice after Univ from the whole experience. Re: import tarrifs - I do recall on visiting the IL DSM plant seeing foreign tax signs on the fence-yard. I guess (but don't know for certain) that there was still import duties on those cars with Mitsu badges - vs Laser or Talon. Otherwise why the disclaimer / warning signs? They also missed the dual-automatic which had computer assisted standard and power-mode (from a toggle near the shifter). I could quarterline with any manual without a blink in power-mode (the difference wasn't slight to say the least - not sure if that was an Eagle Talon only option or if it existed on all DSMs in 1990). You also didn't get any side swim with automatics (better for the tires too - got insane life out of them).

My friend had a '91, bright blue '91 Laser RS Turbo in university and I got to try it out. It was really quick... the turbo comes on HARD, tugs the wheel out of your hands, 1st gear is really short (redlines at 7000, hits that at about 40 mph), and by 2nd gear you're at go-to-prison speed. I had a Nissan NX2000 with intake/exhaust/no options in high school (mid-15s car), and the Laser was quite a bit quicker than that.. but to be honest, probably just a wee bit too hot for front drive! Fun cars. Would've liked to try an all wheel drive model.

Quickly going the way of Suzuki? They've been rated the fastest growing Asian brand in 2018 & 2019. The Mirage has had strong sales 5 years in a row, selling triple what was initially expected. The PHEV, Eclipse Cross, and of course Outlander sport have all exceeded sales expectations. And now that Nissan is playing big brother and investing millions, its only a matter of time before Mitsubishi becomes again what it once was, a niche manufacturer.

Man 6.2 seconds to 60 was very quick back in 1989. I'm trying to think what car in it's class was quicker, if anyone knows feel free to comment.

I remember when these cars first came out. Hard to believe it’s been over 30 years already. I always liked the Eagle Talon AWD. 30 years later Mitsubishi has allowed the Eclipse to become an SUV and totally ruined it.

I would hope the I6 turbo would beat a 4 cylinder. A 3000gt VR4 would smoke it all day though.

These cars were quick back then! High 14 second 1/4 miles stock were possible...

Hell with free mods and a MBC 13's were possible. Blazing fast for its time for sure.

I was 10 years old when this came out .I got my mother who drove an 82 celica gts 5speed to go test drive this . I I still remember pulling out of the dealership lot when she let up the clutch she shouted holy shit lol'! The celica had only 82hp I believe

I got to drive a Laser Turbo - the torque steer was enough to pull the wheel out of your hand if you weren't paying attention.

That Laser is very good looking. A shame none of these cars made it to this decade. Haven't seen one of these in probably 15 years.

I had an Eagle Talon and it ran a 14.6 at 94 mph which wasn't to shabby back in the 90's

Funny how this show progressed with the times. Just a few years earlier they were calling 0-60 in 9 seconds fast.
