NEVER use Steel anything to pound out Pistons. Cut 1.5 inch lengths of 3/8 Fuel line and slip over rod studs BEFORE using a Wooden Dowel to push Pistons out... Mark rods so you can put them back in "clocked" properly....
@justsumguy2u8 жыл бұрын
There's one thing you left out, though; all rod caps need to be numbered, and upon reassembly, they need to go back on their respective rods in the same orientation. The only time this isn't applicable is if the rod bores are going to be machined.

My wife worked in the Oldsmobile engine plant, I worked in the attached next building. She operated the machine that honed the bolt holes (11:40) to a high tolerance. All of the force of the gasoline explosion which propels the automobile forward runs through those bolts, and there must be no slop, or the wriggling of the bolts within those holes will destroy the engine way before it should wear out.

This is my 1st video of yours I've seen and I'm already hooked and going to follow your Facebook page too. My buddy's dad passed away and he had a 93' Silverado with a 350 that his mom had to sell so she gave me the family discount of $500. It's rusted to beat hell but only has about 240,000 miles and runs perfect with the exception of leaking a little oil which is obviously very common in trucks that old. I have a 2000 Silverado for my primary vehicle so I want to use the 93' as more of a project truck and thought about rebuilding the engine so I thought I'd look up a video on how to do it since the only engine I've ever rebuilt was a lawnmower engine in 12th grade shop class. And I came across this video and like the way you put it together and explained everything. All I really need is the engine stand and a couple of those pullers. I can rent the hoist from this place down the block. I can't wait to dive deep into your other videos. Keep up the good work.

Hey Chris , Can I give you a little tip for what it is worth, When I strip an engine I usually mark the Rod Caps & Mains 1 through 8 etc, set them aside numbered so they are all clear of the crank. Then you can lift the crank clear and punch all the Rods and pistons clear with a soft mallet rather than trying to poke each Piston clear in turn with the crank in place. After this loose reassemble the rods etc after prior to cold or hot acid cleaning treatment and your ready for inspection :) .

#2 That is unless the rods are to be replaced with new ones. I know the mains were honed but I've seen some that were put back in mixed positions were a lot of metal had to be removed to realign them or they had to be replaced. I've used number stamps to mark them, mains 1 - 5. The rods marked #1 piston rod 1 & cap 1 the same for the rest in position order. Without doing that your in for trouble later on. Good videos & tips though. I'm getting ready to restore my 68 Camaro & the updates help.

People swear they are all 4bolts but the only Guarantee is its a factor 4" bore block.

At 11:50 he uses a screwdriver to push the piston & connecting rod assembly out of the block. NEVER do that ! Use a small wooden dowel available at any hardware store, and tap it with a mallet. If that screwdriver slips you will scratch the inside wall of the cylinder and you do *not* want to do that. These cylinders are going to need honing, and scratching them will just add to that process. There is a limited amount you can hone off before the cylinder is too large for the piston. There needs to be a close fit, to prevent excessive wear as the piston moves through the cylinder. Every 3 hours at 70 mph, each piston traverses its cylinder 1,000,000 times ! That is a lot of times.

I would have dumped the block as soon as I saw the 2 bolt main. Want to build a good motor? Purchase a jewelers scale that measures down to a hundredths of a gram and make all your moving parts to weigh the same by carefully removing metal. Then, use feeler gauges to check the tolerance of all moving parts. You will thank me when you see and hear the results.
