There is a wrong information in your video. Mis information: Turbocharger doesn't send exhaust gases to engine.. also wastegate isnt meant to control the exhaust gases delivery into engine Actual purpose: Turbocharger uses the exhaust gases energy to run the one end of turbine which in turns rotates the other end of the compressor side. Compressor side sucks & compresses the air from outside, high pressure leads to high temperature so the compressed fresh air goes to intercooler and then to the engine. Waste gate mechanism is to limit the boost pressure based on the engine critical rpm.. waste gate lets the gases out to the exhaust to reduce or control the turbine rpm/boost pressure.. There is a separate system called EGR unit which recirculates the exhaust gas to engine to reduce the NoX levels.. @motowagon

@MotoWagen A slight change in your explanation, the exhaust gas will not be feeded into the engine through compressor. Instead the exhaust gas will drive the compressor to sucks in the atmospheric air and compress and send it to the engine through intercooler because the exhaust gas has only carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, particulate matter but to burn the fuel it needs oxygen which it will get it from atmospheric air.

VW 1.0 TSI..,best turbo petrol engine in smaller sized engines. The engine is so smooth, I can feel weather the engine is running or not. The best way to keep turbo petrol engines in top condition are 1) Always use cleaner petrol. 2) use company specified engine oil. 3) Naver delay or skip service schedule. Last year I have tested Breeza, Grand Vitara Nd Hyrider, 1.5 L NA petrol engine was not impressed. I was driving 110ps Diesel Duster, want switch to petrol engine. The best option was Taigun and Kushak with 1L TSI motor, too expensive for me. Then I tested the C3 Aircross, surprisingly good engine with good power output. I bought the C3 Aircross with 1.5 Lakh discount, that really worked out cheaper than Breeza. So far I am very happy with the car

A turbo charger has a Shaft which has a turbine in one end and a compressor on the other end, like a turbine in a dam where electricity is generated by water splashing on the turbine and moving it, the same way the exhaust gases is used to move the turbine and that runs the compressor the compressor, the turbos compressor side is connected to the engines intake side, so it's the air from the intake side is being compressed and not the engines exhaust

This point was even highlighted by Auto Car review, when compared with VENUE Turbo DCT, long back . Also another reviewer during drag race , highlighted the same point. Now , even an auxiliary gear box are being additionally fitted in some CVT gearboxes , by few manufacturers to boost performance. The advantage of CVT is , it can engage innumerable gear ratios(continuously changing), thereby it's able to rapidly pickup speed than DCT , which has fixed gear ratios. The lag associated with earlier CVT gearboxes were addressed in the new age CVT gearboxes. For a speed of below 150kmph , from 1 litre engine to 1.5 litre engine , new generation CVTs which has decent mileage is the ideal one. Expecting a review on this subject from you , at the earliest. Anyway , good job in indulging technical details. Also equally appreciate your review in Tamil.

Nice information. However, you might want to re-look at what you said at 8:05 about the hot exhaust gases being fed into the engine cylinder. That is never the case. The exhaust is used to drive the turbocharger. The turbocharger consists of a turbine wheel and a compressor wheel connected by a shaft. The hot exhaust is used to spin the turbine wheel. The wastegate is typically pressure-sensitive (or ECU controlled) and is used to divert excess exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel so that it does not end up spinning too fast. Now, once the turbine wheel spins fast enough, the other end which comprises the compressor wheel will spin fast enough to pressurize the intake air and send the compressed air into the cylinder. Which is why, manufacturers specify the RPM from where the turbocharger kicks in. This is basically the RPM where the turbine wheel and hence the compressor wheel spins fast enough to compress the air effectively for everything to work.

While your emphasis on 3 cylinder petrol engines is correct, turbocharging such engines is a thing of the past. NA is best. From the perspective of efficiency & cost. If there has to be an auxiliary boost then a mild hybrid Integrated Starter Generator is more at home in such engines rather than a turbocharger. I like to think of an ISG as a friend in need. It provides assistance during the torque challenged regions of the ICE and a turbocharger as a fair wheather friend. It also comes to its elements at about the same time the ICE has. Honestly a turbocharger is a diesel domine product or maybe used in sports applications.✌️
@vigneshsunder1982 Жыл бұрын
When turbo got introduced in diesel, this was the same thought at that time. But NA diesel got extinct decades ago and the Turbo diesels were the hot selling engines. The same fate is for NA petrols as well in the near future.
@GbMuthu Жыл бұрын
@@vigneshsunder1982 I beg to differ, dude. In diesel engines the turbocharger force-feeds only air. In-order to increase the combustion temperature. Whereas in a petrol engine the turbocharger force-feeds fuel-air mix which leads to its short-circuit release as engine speed increases. This decreases the efficiency of an already inefficient petrol engine.😊

Petrol turbos are only new to India and it's been in use for a long time abroad, in India the power never exceeded 90hp or even 100hp, now high performance petrol heads are coming out more, plus the goverment with its un clear policy they are downsizing engines, so they are mooting these small engines, a three cylinder has to be turbo charged to produce the desired power. It need to have a optimal rpm for it burn the fuel completely and generate more power. More power generation will result in greater mobility which will lead to good mileage. I have personally experienced this in my 1ltr tsi engine. It need to be driven around 2.2-2.5 rpm where i see increase in mileage

@@Raveendhana If we opt for 4 cycl turbo petrols then it will definitely won't be efficient as 3cyl in city drives. You can opt for a hybrid engines if more concerned on efficieny. Coming power delivery, i have driven TGDI of i20 a 3cyl unit and TSI of vw. I don't see any annoying lag which is frustating in city conditions. It's well enough in both engines. Slightly better in low rpms in case of tsi. I also own a 1.6 crdi diesel verna also. On comparison the driveability is not having much noticable difference. Both engines do their job at ease in traffic conditions. Diesel will be slightly efficient like around 2 kmpl difference in city conditions
@Raveendhana Жыл бұрын
@@haripraveen1308 the lag is not exactly lag per se, comparable to the 1.5 of a brezza or a creta, when you drive a 1.5 the power delivery is linear that while driving in the city it's not bothering most people, specially at the lower rpms where the torque is available at the lower end, where as for a 1 liter turbos or a 1.2 turbo it's always a point waiting the turbo boost to appear, so city crawling is been a issue under the 1700 rpm where it's not laid back, the more you open and close the turbo the more you are labouring the engine that's the point. Between choosing a NA vs a three pot turbo depends on city vs highway ride.
@Raveendhana Жыл бұрын
Plus we have a rapid 1.6tdi that's torque monster, and my customer feedback been the three cylinder turbos of venue struggle at the hills as he always has to keep the turbo boiling at 2000 - 2500 rpm to overcome that lag, the 1.5 NAs are tractable machines that easy to deal with more linear power delivery. In GDI engines the compressed fuel is injected directly into the cylinder.. there isn't adequate mixing with intake air.. resulting in inadequate burning of the fuel injected. As a result GDI engines suffer more carbon deposits on the valves , injectors and piston crown...(mpfi has the advantage of spraying air fuel mixture at the back of the intake valve... thus keeping it clean) Resulting in excess heating and frequent maintenance Carbon build-up on the tip of the injector can restrict fuel delivery causing the engine to run lean, in other words too much air and not enough fuel. This can cause several issues such as rough idle, misfires, poor fuel economy and increased emissions. Initially I had planned to buy Kia Sonet GDI..IMT.. after knowing of above, I bought MPFI Brezza smart hybrid.
@raveendhana7084 Жыл бұрын
You are just saying the opposite, gdis main aim is to get the air-fuel mixture right that's why according to the throttle right amount of fuel is injected directly into the cylinder and it's always been complimented by the turbo to push high density air for better efficiency. I don't see incomplete combustion there. As I agree with your Carbon deposit issue, there is always a manufacturer recommendation for it, for eg Suzuki recommends additives for it's booster jet and the vw group recommends high octane fuel etc When the goverment is downsizing the engines, gdis will only become more popular with the smaller turbos, as they cannot get a pefect tune in the mpi turbos specially the three cylinder ones

On the other hand, even if diesels are ridden enthusiastically, they return 16 kmpl hands down even in city traffic and can return 20-21 kmpl realistically in the highways if ridden even between 110-120 kmph. Overall, the content of this video is awesome and thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us Bro. Great explanation and communication from you are the key factors I observed in your videos. The purpose of turbo engine is to provide higher torque and power for wider range of RPM and that too from the lower RPM. This enables the driver to build the acceleration and utilise the full potential of an engine quickly which gives him the feel of fun to drive! Like you pinpointed about the driving style of cruising at lower rpm with higher load, it degrades the performance and makes the smaller engine to cry! But with right shifting of gears and throttling, we can build faster acceleration and improve the fuel efficiency! Once again, keep the good work up with further more videos!

Definitely manufacturers havent matched 3 cylinder engines with 4 cylinder engines. i drove i10 kappa 1.2 for 10 years and is now driving magnite 3 cylinder. you will not get even close to that driving experience. while he knows a lot i dont know why he talks good abt 3 cylinder engines. 4 cylinder petrol engine are a breeze to drive

3 cylinder turbo (i20 n line) or 4 cylinder na(Honda elevate) which is easy to drive ? I travel Mostly in city and occasionally hits highways!! I know both are diff segments but thinking of i20 due to budget constraints

Hi sir, Please make a video on difference between K-Series engine & Kappa engine and its reliability.
@Raveendhana Жыл бұрын
The three cylinder turbos has to be designed in such a way that it's more robust, and there are many ways it can fail too, the VW group 1.0 tsi got awards in 2018 as it was light in weight at the same time more robust and reliable, the question is how reliable is it????? That's the issue the manufacturers need to answer and only time will tell about their reliability, that's why brezza still equips it's car with a 1.5 NA, remember turbo charged 4 cylinder engine is reliable too as the 4 cylinder itself makes good power, but the three pot engine does not make much power with out the turbo hence it's more complex
@haripraveen1308 Жыл бұрын
Sir 1ltr tsi of vw can produce upto 272bhp and 270nm of torque. This is the official power figure when they tested this engine in house which means not fitting to a car at the time of launching this engine around 2013. But currently the company offers it in a tune which is not even 50% of it's capacity. The engine load of our daily driving can be handled with ease by this engine. So if we give a good care it will reward with long run.
@Raveendhana Жыл бұрын
@@haripraveen1308 again it entirely depends on the quality Control of the engine produced here. Plus the more power you make from a small three cylinder turbo the more stress it will produce, so longterm users will still lean towards 4 cylinder NA
@haripraveen1308 Жыл бұрын
@@Raveendhana Sir this is a global engine. It's not actually manufactured in india. The material grade used for handling the stress and output in a small engine matters. There is a huge amount of engineering that is at the back of this engine. A brand like VW which makes sales majorly in european countries would not bet on a inferior engine which they deliver globally. Even toyota engines which are known for reliability are coming in 3cyl nowadays.
@Raveendhana Жыл бұрын
@@haripraveen1308 am a mechanical engineer too, the problem is when an engine comes into India with Indian spec you never know, but as a engine guy am saying there is no replacement for displacement or even number of cylinders, plus the German are known to be reliable in those days now it's different, only time will tell about its reliability
@haripraveen1308 Жыл бұрын
@@Raveendhana yes i agree with you regarding displacement. It always the edge. I just trying to convey all manufacturers are shifting to small engines to comply with pollution norms all over the globe. We shouldn't neglect this 1ltr tsi since it is a 3 cyl and brand it as a inferior product. Let's give some respect and it is also a proven engine which is in production for past 10 years. And there is no such thing called indian spec. All over the world they provide in different tunes. The tune we get in india is also available in european nations as well

Older petrol engines with 4 cylinder is more efficient and better to rework by any mechanic. Bs6 engines has more carbon deposits and more complex for engine longlife. The ratio of petrol and air must be perfect in order to have good engine life.

Bro the higher ethanol content might affect these engines more, as every aspect influences how much power it produces, the 95 octane is recommended indeed to reduce the knocking or detonation. As these gdi turbos are highly sensitive to fuel quality. There are certain things which the manufacturers openly talk sometimes

I had Sonet DCT, I just had a doubt, you said not to drive in a low speed with low gears, but usually i ll drive 70 to 80 kmph, with 7th gear, although my rpm will be 1500 to 1700 only at that speed, i think it won't kick the turbo, is this a good way to drive to get a efficient and good for engine? Or i have to increase some rpm to get the turbo kick in and drive? With higher gear is it good to drive with less than 1700 rpm without turbo kick in or drive with 2000+ rpm with turbo always? Which will be the good to drive to get good efficiency and safe engine for long term?
@Raveendhana Жыл бұрын
Point is you should not labour the engine as much as possible, offcourse in the city you have to drive slow under the turbos radar, and once you push the turbo kicks in there you get the sudden pull, so point is you should drive in a way you are not labouring your engine, so you have to drive depending on the load.

Well explained and was quite clear,🙌however, what about the engine reliability for long term usage, is it as reliable as NA engines?
@TheSrathish Жыл бұрын
Only if well engineered, and today we do get good engineering. Do note here you need Engine+Turbo to gel and work. NA is simple engineering. There used to be a say earlier Petrol engines are less expensive to maintain in long run compare to Diesel engines, mainly because smaller Diesel engines need Turbo. If we go by this logic, then today's turbo petrol will also be expensive to maintain in long run compared to NA engines. 3 cylinders needs to work more to get going.. Reliability is simple to achieve in NA, whereas it is bit complex to achieve in Turbo assist Engines.

One point I would add is Suzuki for it's boosterjet is prescribing additives every 20000k, then the Vw group asks users to go for high octane 95 for to prevent unwanted detonation, and knocking. Then You have the carbon build up in these gdi engines which needs regular servicing, then the turbo is responsible for the power increase, plus with the ethanol content ever increasing will affect the turbo engines more In a nutshell even though these three cylinder turbos are said to be well engineered, how these are going to be adopted to the Indian conditions only time will say, as these have more moving parts then a NAs, generally these vibrate more than the even numbered engines the Inline and flats So you will always have a option to choose a 1.5 NA making 103-121 hp with the same power made by the three cylinder turbos. So you will get to choose a turbo top end vs a 1. 5 base bigger car in most case
