The Supremes were an American female singing group and the premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and are, to date, America's most successful vocal Group with 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, in only 5 years. .Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland--Dozier--Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, the Supremes rivaled the Beatles in worldwide popularity and their success made it possible for future African American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success .
Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit,formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptations). Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as the Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio.
During the mid-1960s, the Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left to pursue a solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell, at which point the group's name reverted to the Supremes. After 1972, the lineup changed more frequently; Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all became members of the group during the mid-1970s. The Supremes disbanded in 1977 after an 18-year run.

⁠@@roycobb8268 Cindy was approached by Motown officials when and where she never said. This is what Patti Labelle said Cindy told her. Those men dressed in suits told Cindy to not tell anyone including her group Patti and the Bluebells anything and how taking on this job as a Supreme if she turned it down she’d be turning down the biggest and important job of her life, something to that magnitude. So at first Cindy didn’t know who she was gonna replace but the actual Supremes story will never be told because although Mary wrote her books the actual firing of Flo and what led up to her celebrating her birthday June 30th with Diana and Mary to getting fired the next evening, what caused her to get tipsy and go on stage to poke out her stomach and all. Flo made a bad decision to do this but something made her do this. A lot of speculation over the years but the actual reason why she did this was not confirmed other than Flo saying they were always saying she’s getting fat is the reason she did this. Doesn’t make sense but she either found out Cindy was in Vegas sitting in the audience watching her she had to know it was a matter of time she’d be out of the group so she said to hell with it and went on stage acting out. Cindy never told her full story either so there’s a lot of hush hush I feel that’s never been told.

In some ways the Supremes seemed to be in a glorified, Hollywood version of the sharecropping system. The plantation owner provides all of the things that the sharecropper needs (including clothes) and then when the crop comes in, charges all of those things back to the farmer, who is often left in a debt situation because the crop (supposedly) never amounts to the coverage of the items charged against the farmer. Obviously the Supremes were living better than any sharecropper ever did, but their financial situation is eerily similar.

Yes, you are right. Birdsong was even at the Gordy mansion where Flo was fired the 1st time. After Flo was fired the 1st time, Birdsong stepped in for one performance only. That is because Gordy had no choice but to ask Flo to come back because Gordy then found out that he couldn't get Birdsong out of her contract with Labelle. Flo was then back for another two months and was doing just fine, not missing any performances or rehearsals but Birdsong was still stalking Flo, following her to different performances when she herself wasn't performing with Lablelle. This made Flo very uncomfortable and made her feel that things were going on behind her back to put her out. But then Gordy found an excuse to finally ax Flo for good. One night during a performance in Vegas, Gordy claimed that Flo made an unattractive gesture with her stomach. Gordy this time told Flo to get out of Vegas and not ever come back to the group or he would have her arrested for trespassing. That is when Birdsong stepped in for Flo the 2nd time ...but this time it was permanent because Gordy by this time had gotten Birdsong out of her legal commitment to Labelle.

On the night Gordy kicked Flo out of the Supremes he told her that if she tried to go back on stage with the Supremes he would call security to escort her off the stage and charge her with trespassing. Berry states in the interview that Diana was willing to "pay the price" to be a superstar. I just wonder what price he thinks Miss Ross paid. Miss Ross didn't pay any price that I can see....unless she gave away her goodies to Gordy if that is what he is talking about. Otherwise, it seems to me that it was Mary and Florence who had to pay the price for Miss Ross's desire to be a solo superstar. The other acts at Motown also paid the price for all the attention lavished on Diana by Gordy. Miss Ross paid no price at all. As Mary stated in an interview.."Diana wanted everything for herself." More propaganda bull shit---- Diana was NOT the key to the Supreme s -- she had that voice and yes was great--- but it came with 2 other ladies that brought their talents to the table... COMBINED---THEY WERE THE KEY --- THEY WERE THE 3 ORIGINAL SUPREMES -- and had they stayed together and not broken up . It would have been different.. +Sassy - when you stay in LA for a long period of time, Black people seem to get brainwashed into thinking they can not be too black. Miss Mary is always popping up all over You Tube saying "We" over, over & over again. Diana Ross was always the superstar with background singers, from 1964 till 1970, 3 of them were LUCKY enough to be co billed as "Supremes" a mistake on Berry's part, they were not required, ever.
