That they made Azula's sing-songy nonsense canon is such a missed opportunity. A smart ruler knows the best punishment is humiliation, and also has elaborate spy networks around their families. The sharper punishment is "give Zuko to Iroh". Iroh has a child and the main line is restored, and Ozai goes down the succession line, behind a son he hates. A son who will now be guarded much more tightly under Iroh's supervision and in anticipation of Ozai-based fuckery. Azula lies, Ursa runs to Ozai, who casually uses the opportunity his wife handed to him on a silver platter. Boom, just like that, Azula fucks him out of opportunities to be happy. Again.

I like how this episode characterizes Mai, actually. Mai shows emotion (blushing at Zuko) and is immediately punished by Azula for it (fire shot at her and shoved in a pond). It really shows you why she doesn't show emotions often. Azula saw it as a weakness and used it to attack her. Plus, you can see Mai realizes that Azula is up to something, but still lets her do it, and even after the apple on her head is on fire she doesn't move. Really shows the power Azula has over her. I really liked the subtle Mai characterization this episode!!

12:50 The theory that stuck with me about Azulon's threat is one I saw online: Instead of having Zuko killed, Azulon planned to disinherit Ozai by essentially shifting Zuko to Iroh's lineage. Iroh remains next in line to be Fire Lord and Zuko gets a father who actually loves him. Ozai, in a rage, would rather kill Zuko himself than let that happen, and it basically plays out the same from there.

We already know Ozai doesn't like him, and if Azulon disinherited Ozai while essentially rewarding Zuko, a failure who clearly deserves nothing at all, it would probably put him over the top. Obviously, Ozai can't be the one to kill his father, because then he can't take the throne if it ever comes to light; but he can easily murder his own firstborn. He's now lost his son, as was intended either way. And, frankly, his original point still stands. Iroh doesn't have an heir, and he still has Azula, who he loves more anyway.

I like that theory. It would be a hilariously deserved blow to Ozai’s ego and makes Azulon seem a tad more intelligent and humane. I don’t think it’s what they intended or else it would’ve been written into the comics, but it is now my personal headcanon.

So the thing about Sokka throwing the boomerang is that it doesn't bounce off harmlessly, Azula knocks it out of the way because she perceives it to be the biggest threat. If you notice, the boomerang reaches Azula before any of the other attacks do, which requires a lot of strength from Sokka. And you'll get to see other moments in the series where Azula finds Sokka to be one of the stronger assets of the team because she knows how strong non-benders can be.

I mean, she's seen how many people Ty Lee's taken down because they underestimated her. She doesn't want to go down because of such a common weakness. Something this review made me think about; Toph and Katara’s perspectives on helping setup may be a subtle way of showing the different views of the nations. Katara is from the Southern Water Tribe which very much operates as a community. Survival is rooted in everyone helping each other. Similarly, Aang was raised by the Air Nomads who don’t really engage in materialism and were known to be charitable. However, Toph is from the Earth Kingdom, a place of rigid social class and exclusivity. Tbh the Gaang is lucky she was so DOWN TO EARTH 😃 and not expecting of handouts.

There is also the added aspect of Toph having always been coddled and treated as if she cannot handle herself. So she is still desperate to prove that she doesn't need anyone taking care of her, that she is capable on her own. Which is why the fight with Katara works so well, they are both the product of their upbringing.

⁠@@matildamanzo1273not just that, it shows the class divide between them too. Katara is the daughter of the Chief of their tribe but that just means she has more responsibilities to her tribesmen. Aang is from a nomadic community based society with a collectivist ruling under the oldest and most spiritually stable members. But Toph is the only daughter of the richest people in her home. She may have been coddled and sheltered but she was still incredibly privileged. Even while she was going behind her parents backs, she was still catered too by the people at Earth Rumble because she was the champion. Add that to her Need to be independent, and you get a very powerful bender with no experience to back her up.

Also, given the reason of the conversation, it makes far more sense that Katara is referring to the stone tent that Toph has put up instead of sharing their open-air camping space. They all just view her as a tough kid; the blindness is never something Team Avatar considers as something that defines her, and so it's usually only as an afterthought.

two things i noticed after watching this first, is there a weapon to help water benders waterbend, airbenders have staffs, firebenders have swords and earthbenders have hammers what would a water bender's be, like ribbon or rope or just a spear ? second, iroh is zukos appa, you lay a finger on him, and zuko goes bezerk, also iroh is the only reason zuko is alive, same way appa is the reason the other characters are alive.

Saying you're from the colonies though might work as long as you clarified you were anti-Fire Nation which Zuko might not have been able to claim at this time even as a lie.

What's funny too, is that Azulon wouldn't have been poisoned by Ursa if not for his threat on Zuko's life. Azulon really be thinking that A. Ozai ever once gave a shit about his son, and B. That threatening to kill him would ever go over well for anyone even if he did. Were it not for Azulon being so bad at judging character, Ursa would've never been pressured into killing him to save her son. That wouldn't necessarily mean Ozai wouldn't have still ascended, but at least Zuko wouldn't have been left alone with the two worst members of his family

For What Little we know about him, Azulon seems to be a semi reasonable evil type. He has no problem with evil actions but only does them if he he sees a reason to. He also has a strong belief in the fire nation belief in honor, which is why he was so upset by Ozai speaking against Iroh in such a dishonorable way. However, he underestimated that Ozai has no problem with malice simply for malice sake or any care for honor.

I never realized this before but zuko has the perfect disguise as a victim of war, Jett mentions to zuko that he knows his scar wasnt from a water bender and that clicked to me that Lee (zuko) is a scarred boy traveling with his uncle trying to find a better life for himself which paints himself as a boy who was attacked by fire nation soldiers who ended up killing his parents, not to mention zukos cold and silent personality also works out for that type of characture as a victim of war would most likely be very traumatized and quiet

In a more darker version of this show, Azula killing his grandfather Azulon because Ozai told her so would be ideal, since Azula even though is not very emotional all she wanted was a sign of approval just as much as Zuko and when Ozai ordered her to stay instead of following him to battlefield she replies something like "I've done everything you asked for, let me be by your side" and he denies her wishes, so Ozai considers Azula as a tool which is why he would order her to kill Azulon instead of him sullying his own hands

First off I love how Josh (if he's still your editor that is) helps to prove you're point on how terrible Danny looks in his Zuko alone is the best Avatar episode video. I find that very funny and kinda nice of him (Kinda) and I don't think you looked ugly or anything like that in your Zuko alone video sure your hair is not in the BEST condition but it's better then mine which looks like a mix between a rats nest, A spiders web and a wanna be afro that doesn't even know what color it wants to be so compared to my hair yours looks great! You gotta see things from Azulon's perspective. Iroh is his firstborn and a legendary general. He's also much older and more accomplished than Ozai. Sure Iroh is more jovial but that doesn't actually affect his proficiency as an heir to the fire nation Throne. Meanwhile to Azulon, Ozai is his less impressive bratty younger son, who is obviously jealous of his brother and tries to hard to impress. Azulon probably sees Ozai the same way Ozai sees Zuko.

Something that we don't talk about a lot when it comes to Avatar is the fact that Zuko has extremely strong legs and instead of firebending he would have been better of breaking Aang's spine in half
