I had an early AM7 for years until it sadly it was stolen. A lovely bike and a joy to ride. Inevitably it got a bit modified. The original brakes were flimsy and the calipers flexed when applied; the levers had sharp edges which wore through the cables and made them snap. All were replaced with ordinary Shimano bits which worked much better. It was always too low geared, even with the optional 9 tooth top sprocket, which also wore out quickly. When the first set of wheel rims wore out I had the whole arrangement radically replaced with Dura-Ace hubs (amazingly, available with the right number of spoke holes), a Hyperglide cassette with 8 speeds and a top sprocket with 11 teeth, and a huge custom-made Egg Rings oval chainwheel with 64 teeth. This worked fine with the original Suntour frame-mounted lever as it wasn't indexed, and it was a truly civilised arrangement. The original foam pads on the handlebars soon wore out and were replaced with ordinary tape, and the original saddle cracked and was replaced with a Fabric one. The original Wolber tyres were frail and puncture-prone, and their Schwable Kojak replacements much superior except on cobbled streets in the rain where their lack of tread made things rather exciting. When it was stolen I was heartbroken, but rallied and scraped the money together to buy an AM22, which I have to admit is a better machine in every way. I could never park this in the street, though, so if I go anywhere this is necessary I have to use my elderly Giant road bike. The price of perfection is high in every way. Incidentally, the AM7 had a large rear carrier, a very useful thing. It wasn't on the bike when it was stolen and I still have it. The current rear carriers have fittings that don't go on an AM7, so this one is probably a rarity. If you want it, it's yours for the cost of shipping it across the Atlantic.

1983? Wow! Looks just like the red one from 2009! I guess if the design is solid, you don't need to change much at all. :)
