Great tip Mike, thanks for sharing. I activated Sam Houston national forest this afternoon, partly with my ATAS and partly with my EFHW. The ATAS kicked ass! Used the up/down buttons and was about to get under 1.5:1 on 20.

@@hamradiotube I was at Kelly’s Pond Campground. There is a nice field with some picnic benches. I regret not giving a call on 2 meters, maybe you woulda heard me. I had my N9TAX antenna with me but didn’t put it up. Another guy from the club and I are planning a camping trip for later this month. We plan to activate the forest again from Stubblefield Camp Ground.

@@W5NEH Oh cool. That doesn't look too far from me. It's hard to find places in the forest to activate from. I usually just sit at the trailhead that's right by Huntsville SP. I didn't have VHF on but we might have been able to make contact. I can hit the WA5AIR repeater in Montgomery from home so you never know.

Good to know. I have a Toyota van and I want to install a mag mount on it. I have ruined three cables because the cable is crushed as it goes through a door slot. Any ideas?

Puck mounts are the only ways to go. Solid mounted, not relying on flimsy mount
