Mountain and Snow camping in the Hennessy Hammock

I threw together a quick overnight trip up in to the Olympic Mountains. With me I had my trusty Hennessy Ultralite Explorer Asym zip hammock.
Unfortunately after a late start, knee high snow on a 45 degree slope and no snow shoes I was not able to make the designated evening camp. Fortunately the steep mountain slope I was on happened to have a crap load of trees... hammocks like trees.
I think it is safe to say that at this point the Hennessy is my go to sleep system for most of my adventures... providing there are trees.

Just found you on the you tube. Have the Hennesey Asym Expedition for summer and an ENO with down under/top quilts for winter. Don't know why I was a ground dweller for so many years. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. Greg

Love seeing different hammock setups. Winter camping sure looks fun. Except that you could die. But at least all the critters are in a deep sleep. At least the ones that could eat you. Lol! We live between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. Like you, we are so blessed to live in or near paradise. Great filming!

+gliderrider Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Good thermal gear is critical... without it hammocks and snow covered mountains can quickly become an ugly pairing. Stay safe.

I have the same hammock and setting the head end about 8" to 12" (20-30cm) helps keep you from sliding down while sleeping. The heaviest part of your body (head/torso) wants to slide down to the middle (lowest point). Setting the head side lower, you move the lowest point of the hammock to where you torso is. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but give it a try. I think you'll be surprised.

Good of you for getting out there in those conditions! Try hanging the foot end of your hammock a bit higher than the head and you won't slide down at all and yet still feel level. Of course hanging after dark makes everything trickier. Another thing you may want to try is using a wind screen around your stove. You'll be amazed at how much more heat gets to your pot instead of being blown away. Even a slight draft will rob heat away. Lots of fun even though it's lots of work. Good job.

looks like a great time... beauty spot. I also use a thermarest when it's sub tropical out. it definitely make a big difference, but I find that I wake up with cold shoulders because they are so narrow. would be cool if they designed one specifically for us off season hammock guys... something with a wider top area....maybe like wings that could still form to the shape of the hammock while protecting more of your body. would probably help to keep it under you as well.

My Marmot down jacket never lets me down but I agree, small 6" wings would around the shoulder area may be a good idea.

once you go to a underquilt you will never go back, but the same thing can be said about hammocks in general. I threw my mattress away 2 years ago and went full time sleeping in my hammock

Fantastic video!!! I own a Hennessy Hammock. How well did the solar blanket work, draped over the hammock? How did you attach it to the hammock? I'm guessing just about anything would help under the small asym fly!
@offgridwarrior
@offgridwarrior 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian. Emergency blanket worked pretty well, the only downside is condensation will collect on the underside of blanket resulting in a few drops of water here and there. Blanket was just draped over the ridge of hammock and I tied the corners of the blanket together so it would not fly away if the wind picked up.

No under quilt. I am not apposed to one but I have to say my Thermarest Prolite is doing a fine job in cold weather... mid 20's is the lowest I've experienced with no problems.

Thanks for taking us along. Brilliant idea with the emergency blanket. Glad it didn't condense too much. Agree with pitching/sleeping with your head at the lower end of the hammock: you won't slide. There are insulating wing things available, I think from ENO: HotSpot Hammock Sleeping Pad. Holds your pad and has the wings. Or see ShugEmery's fairly new video on pads in hammocks. On the other hand, "Friends don't let friends sleep in hammocks with pads instead of underquilts." I couldn't really tell, did you have a sleeping bag inside or just your triple layers of clothing? Just found your channel and subscribed. Looking forward to more videos. Best of luck and fun.

Two nice trails can be accessed at the Hurricane Ridge National Parks gate they are Heather Park and Lake Angeles both trails start at the same parking area, this video was shot just short of Heather Park. I would definitely also recommend taking a look at the Hoh River trail near Forks WA.
