If the climb is chunky or has big roots the suspension should be at least semi-open for traction. The feeling takes a little getting used to because it seems inefficient, but the bike sticks to the ground better. Shock tunes are now so good I leave it open on smoother trails too as my bike is long and its hard to pressure front and rear tires at the same time on looser punches. I appreciate the extra traction. It does require more muscle and cardio power, but I live in the mountains and like heavily treed trails so work on my fitness to adapt.

I find that the best position when climbing up nasty, steep hills is to sit on the very nose of the saddle, so that you can still have grip on your rear tire, but trying to get your upper body as low over the bars as possible, which allows you to push lots of power as well as keeping your front tire firmly on the ground so that you keep the bike under control.
@brendanb3257
@brendanb3257 4 жыл бұрын
max denger I can’t believe they didn’t say that. He said “keep your weight back” which is terrible advice, keep your weight low.
@taylordw
@taylordw 2 жыл бұрын
@max danger another thing that happens to me when I sit in the nose is that my legs squat, yes it’s uncomfortable but I find it not only helps keep the back tire from spinning it gives you great leverage to power up really nasty sections. With dropper posts I find, contrary to this video that lowering the seat gets you in this position without the saddle jamming up your butt crack, making really steep climbs doable. before you troll the hell out of this idea give it a try; of course not so low that it is like riding a size small BMX bike, and not all the way low as used for descending, but lower than default position where your legs extend just short of completely on each stroke if your gear is low enough it won’t hurt your knees, even if it looks awkward ( not a good tactic for a single speed where your gear might be too high for seated climbing and standing & pulling on the bar with each stroke is still the best technique)
@enpluson1539
@enpluson1539 2 жыл бұрын
@@taylordw I actually don't have a dropper post on my bike, but what sometimes happens is that i slide so far forward that i stop sitting on my saddle and instead stand in front of it in a slightly crouched position, keeping contact to it with my tailbone pressing into the nose. That kind of sounds like what you are talking about.

Aye but if you're wanting to get fitter and more explosive on the bike it's good to enter the climb with speed and try to maintain all the way to the top, it's also less tiring if you're up to the top much faster, not to mention more fun. The trick for me is when the push starts to push back a little drop the gears and coast, done correctly it won't get too crunchy.

The biggest thing you can do to climb better is the hardest thing for most people to do. Lose weight. It won't only help your climbing but it will make faster all around and let you go further each ride, which in turn makes you even stronger. You never hear skinny 11% body fat guys complaining about climbing. If you're 10lbs overweight, losing that 10lbs will make a huge difference.
4 жыл бұрын
Recently bought an xc bike with a 2x12 system. Best decision ever! I can go fast on flats and long descents, AND climb steep hills too without any compromises. True freedom, which is exactly what riding should mean. Not going 1x, probably until internal gearbox systems get bigger range and become more affordable.

RaggleFraggle! I have been using an orbea hardtail with a 2x10. On downhill use the bigger chainring on the front and keep the rear on like the 7th or 8th ring so you can pedal to add speed where needed but most importantly keep the chain tensioned. Some derailleurs have a clutch lever you can twist to that the derailleur is fixed in place and doesnt bounce around so have a look at that. That said I recently switched to a full sus scott spark 29er with a 1x12 and I am faster than on my hardtail both uphills and downhills.

front tyre choice is key for me...a mud spike will result in major drag & require extra effort to overcome...even on hard pack paths/roads. Also, if it's particularly bad on a cold day, don't be put off. I find this completely normal but only typically for the first hill. Make sure you've been taking your preventer as instructed as religiously as possible and then don't feel worried if you need to take more of your reliever to clear the wheezing than usual. If it's getting particularly troublesome, perhaps you need to have a medication review with you GPs asthma nurse/clinic. If the meds aren't working for you, there are other options available that may do a better job. Above all else, don't let it get the better of you, get the better of it! 👍🏻

That's fine, uphill pedaling is a waste of energy anyways so I always walk too to save it for the more fun stuff. Plus I just wanna ride. Most people don't have the time to spend spinning on a exercise bike to get climbing legs anyways.

I have an old-school Titanium hardtail with a 20 tooth chainring in front. Climbing is my middle name. A little trick if you get stopped on a climb and it's hard to get started because you can't keep your off side foot on the ground while you're trying to clip in or get your Powerstroke going. If you have a dropper post,, lower your post a little bit so you can get clipped back in or started and then raise the seat again. And take a break from working so hard if the climb gets even remotely less steep. Exhale a lot. When you went a little taken more oxygen.

When I get off my bike, when climbing, I like to drop my seat post down before getting off the bike. This makes it easier to get off the bike because you won’t have to be standing on your tippy toes if you’re still on the seat and you lose your balance. Plus, it makes it easier to get back on the bike when you wanna start climbing again.

Pacing yourself for the whole ride too makes a big difference when you get to the climbs. I often feel like I'm not keeping up early on but then I realise (some of) those speedsters were pushing too hard and after 30 minutes they're lagging and panting while I'm just hitting my best rhythm and approaching climbs with some fuel left in the tank...

Top Tip: It's not all that advisable to take water refills directly from a stream...you never know what maybe 20-30 or so metres (or more) up the stream. You wouldn't want to be drinking water that's flown over, through, or around the car is of a dead sheep for example. Always, as a minimum, make sure to sterilise and, where possible, filter your water. 👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you for another beautifully produced, yet completely useless, video. I know what you're saying...sure it's easy to troll, but what would you propose? I'm glad you asked! How about explaining that actual gear choice, instead of saying that you should choose the right gear? How about demonstrating the wrong gear choice versus the right one back to back? How about showing examples of what a good line is versus a bad one? It wasn't all bad, you did mention the Seatpost position, so good on you. Focus less on the glitzy production and a little more on the practical information.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

Do it all on 4th gear ever since I was little. You don't need all these gears for pedalling up hill or don t need to stop and adjust your seat to right height it's not nesciarry and all that makes no sense when standing up and riding is the best for getting up hill. Standing up allows for better pedal stroke and this means up hill in minutes.I pedal up hill to work but steal hill on the bike trail to work ànd I stand up power pedal up it and I'm up in minutes.

If you want to get a lot of stamina training, limit yourself to using much much harder gears and climb your local hills. Coz all i have is a 6 speed folding bike with the front having a 42T and the rear with a 32T at its biggest and let me tell you, it aint pretty climbing those hills. But once you do get used to it, switching back to a normal 7+ speed bike with proper gear ratios feels like a breeze climbing. Plus you learn how to control your pacing and breathing if you actively do so.

Here's a sample: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3_UZGpmZq-ErK8 What advice can you give for endless climbs, apart from sucking it up?...LoL. Sadly, I have to take a few rest breaks and even have to walk it out when my legs are cooked three different ways!....LOL. FYI, the video above doesn't show the climbing, but as he suggests, you have to climb out in the end which is brutal because it's windy, gradual small hills that seem to go on forever. I usually take rest breaks and sometimes find myself literally crawling out at the very end..LOL. Anyway, I'd appreciate your input on this!

Do you have any tips for climbing rocky sections?

Drop you seat post if you have a dropper and get out of the saddle. Stand on the pedals and move around the cockpit of the bike to keep your weight centered. Body English is key. Shift into a higher gear (harder to push) and give it the gas before you get into the nasty stuff. Most importantly, just keep at it. You will find what works for you and it very well may differ from my tips

I would add, don't go to your lowest gear too quickly. Often 2nd gear is better for most technical climb sections since it helps you maintain momentum over rocks and roots. I would love to see someone do a watt study on 1rst gear vs. 2nd gear for intermediate technical climbing. I suspect 2nd might be more efficient.

A lot of my mates don't comprehend the "going slow and steady" part they just change to 22 in the front and 42/46 in the back and try to climb fast,half way up they already wasted all of their energy,they call me crazy because I use 36 in the front and 34/36 in the back but I go slow and controlling my breathing

What's the inside skivvy on bowing your elbows out as opposed to keeping them in so your lower arm is as parallel to the ground as is comptortable and maintaining a strong core (i.e. not collapsing down on to your diaphragm)?

Tire Pressure: go high! Unless it's a really technical one, the less "drag" of pumped up tires will help. Or if you are planning on climbing a hill on beggining of the ride to come back down, go 40PSi up, and adjust at the top to come back down.
@vomErsten

Tire pressures are very dependent on the type of tire and type of terrain. I would not want to run pumped up tires on wet, rooty terrain, for example. Over hard-pack or loose-over-hard, though? Sure!

Or get clipped so you have power all the time. Its also smoother so there is less risk of slipping. I dropped a 12min climb to 8 just by switching pedals. Fit xc'ers do it in 4. I'm at 7 sometimes mid 6 so far. Also lock your suspension if its flat route if not keep it open (or in case of my scott - traction mode). And go for high cadence ALWAYS so you'll use cardio not strength. Your heart can pump for longer than your muscles.

It is scientifically proven that less pressure in your tires decreases rolling resistance on rough surfaces. And rough surface does not only refer to "really technical climbs", but also to fire road climbs. Small stones and roots are less *of an drag creating obstacle for your tires when they can roll over things smoothly.

@@gmbn Here's a good video! My "non scientifical" legs always felt better with higher pressures, when cycling trough fire/dirt roads. I don't even like to climb that much, but I would go climb something to try this out, just to get out of the appartment these days.
