Another blast from Specialized past! This week we are restoring a 1997 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp. This was one of my favorite bikes when I first worked in a shop and today, we try to bring it back to its former glory with a modern cockpit. Special thanks to our bike partners, Marquecycling.com and bikeflights.com. If you’re interested in collaborating on a project let me know. Their generous support is making it possible for me to help more people finish up their project bikes this year.

I bought the 1998 Stumpjumper M2 Comp brand new from the bike shop...my first real bike. Over the years I upgraded most of the components, XTR derailleur, XT Rapid Fire shifters, and Race Face everything else😅...but Im still riding it today. Best money I ever spent.

Loved watching an old Stumpy be fixed up. I have a 99 Stumpy Comp in Silver which I took down a different route, replaced the drivetrain with an Advent groupset and upgraded the old Manitou SX to a new Manitou Markhor. Frame is beaten but still going strong.

Love to see 90's Era mtb's get a new lease on life. Frame Geometry has definitely made trail riding better, but truthfully old mtb's are still relevant. I kept riding my 1998 Barracuda XC URT up until 4 years ago. The Frame is hanging in my garage waiting to be turned into a 26" wheeled soft tail gravel bike.

90's bikes sucked when looking back from now. The only thing that makes them still relevant is people who are steeped in nostalgia or like uncomfortable bikes. 26" wheels feel like they belong on a kids bike. I have a '08 Spec Enduro that was state of the art at the time. I ride it only at an indoor skate park/bike park where small wheels are better. It is really uncomfortable compared to my 29er Stumpy and my fatbike.
@icantgivecredit871
@icantgivecredit871 Жыл бұрын
@@petedog9581 Today, they make for great around-town beaters. For the $150 one might spend on some horrible Walmart special, they could buy a quality vintage bike that's cheap simply because of depreciation. Also, riders of short stature might appreciate smaller wheels.

@@icantgivecredit871 It's for sale. $800 with an extra set of Kenda Tomac Pro 2.35's and extra brake pads I haven't put on. Still a great bike. It just needs a rider. My son is 6'2" and it is a med, so he can't ride it. He has a 29er hardtail.

I really enjoyed this one, brought back a LOT of good memories! I couldn't remember if it was 96 or 97, but I had and loved one almost identical to this one (a larger frame size, but otherwise identical). I remember the first thing I did was to swap out that RS Judy for a SID. Did my first year of racing on that bike 😊 Thanks for another great video, my friend (and tge memories that came with this one) 😁✌

I had one from the early 2000 and loved it. Made a bonehead move and traded it for a cx bike. Now 20 years later I found another the one. It has a sid, xtr rd fd shifters and v brakes. The pawn shop wants 200 for it and a full overhaul plus parts would cost double the price of the bike. Worth it or not

I have the same 15.5" M2 bike, from '95. They used to have a 550mm handlebar and a whopping 120mm stem! Long and stretched riding position. The short frames from the '90s are too small for modern MTB riding, but they are perfect to convert the old skool Stumpjumper Comp to a modern Stumpjumper GRVL with a drop bar and a 60mm stem. :)
@CoolBikeProjects
@CoolBikeProjects 2 жыл бұрын
That is awesome! Yes the original handle bars were ridiculous.
@tmayberry7559
@tmayberry7559 10 ай бұрын
Stumpjumper grvl. So you're saying with a short stem say 80-90 and gravel drop bars I have a set 36 on the tops and 44 flared would be a good combo ? The reason I asked is. The one I was looking at has a top tube length of 23 inches. Never used a a 60 mm stem before
@DilbertMuc
@DilbertMuc 10 ай бұрын
@@tmayberry7559 Yes. Road bikes have a shorter upper tube than MTBs because of the road bar. That's why old skool MTBs, which have a short upper tube and huge stems are ideal for GRVL conversion. I think at around 1999 it all changed to shorter stems and wider handle bars, but before that those frames were ideal for conversion.

I guess if you have some parts lying around, this would be worth it. The problem with old bikes is finding old parts. Where do you get parts for that junk shock? Also, I won't ride a bike wo disc brakes anymore. They didn't even have caliper mounting tabs on the fork or frame back then. I appreciate what you are doing, but I won't dump $ into old bikes anymore. Budget bikes are better now than the high end ones from 20-25 years ago. This is pure nostalgia.

Wow I have almost the same bike! Bought new in 1997. Still works great. Just like yours my aluminum “S” head tube badge fell off, I had it in a box for the longest time but since lost it. If you find a source for those let us know! Also I replaced the 550? flat bars with Azonic Risers the same day I bought the bike. After one ride I couldn’t stand the wide bars back then and cut them down to 570!! I run 740-760 bars now, funny how things change.

@@CoolBikeProjects Hey thanks for the reply. I found out it's a 2001 model. I found it in a plie on the curb that someone was throwing out. I could not believe it. Looks like it was in attic for the last decade or so because it was very dusty and with very little signs of use. After a wash and new tires it looks almost new. But I have plans to upgrade it similar to your previous Rock Hopper build 🤘.

I found a 99 Stumpjumper in a pawn shop. They want $200 for it. From the looks of it, an overhaul at my local bike shop would be the best thing to do to this bike. The overhaul would cost double the price of the bike, not including the a new chain, brake pads and cassette. Was wondering if it is worth purchasing.
@CoolBikeProjects

Great question the best way can answer it is to say that a bike that fits you well is comfortable and does what you wanted to do is worth invest in. These were great bikes back in the day, but if it doesn’t fit you well and it is uncomfortable to ride I wouldn’t do it. For $600-$700 you could probably find a really nice new bike that has modern geometry and a more comfortable ride. It might be worth looking at that first.
