@@CanobieCoaster It was before the helmets. I believe that after that visit there was a pile up on The Gauley that caused the state to really crack down on the park. Next time I went Colorado River had the helmets and was only allowing 3 people. Was still great but prior it was on a different level.

Yeah, unfortunately I am old enough to have visited this place when it was still action park. Luckily, by then the looping water slide was standing but not operating. Nonetheless, you always left with some bruises and scratches. I earned every bit of the popular t shirt that says, “I survived Action Park”

I went to Here when it was Action Park in 1990. I remember the cliff jumps and that slide. I also went on the long gone alpine slide. They used one of the ski lifts to bring you to the top. I also remember seeing the looping cannonball slide. It was not operating, but it was still there in 1990. Mountain Creek is the currant name for what used to be Vernon Vally/Great Gorge. It’s a ski area which at one time claimed to have the largest artificial snowmaking in the world.

I honestly miss Action Park, I know it was considered unsafe by many but I'd go all the time for the attractions it had. I'm sad to see those attractions gone. I know people won't worry about feeling unsafe anymore which is good but the old school stuff was good.

It honestly sucks that Colorado River got a lot more tame. When you ride the slide, you can actually see the alternate pathway you could’ve gone back when it was Colorado River Rapids. When you had to wear the helmets, the slide was genuinely insane and I miss the old Action Park with the attractions that are also gone like Cannonball Falls and the Tarzan Swing

I've heard of a lot of people who are nostalgic for the old action park. Sure lots of people got hurt and even died, but that shows the thrill it gave the majority of people who attended. The rides were intense and dangerous. But let's be real lol it's nice that mountain creek wants to keep the slides smooth. and you can still feel the edginess to it. they really want to get your heart moving. looks like a real rush~ 💚

0:00 We used to jump...er...I mean fall out of our tubes on that ride and go down it without them. Was way more fun without the tube. Lifeguard would tell you to get back in your tube at the spots before the drop but we never listened. Colorado River Ride though was the most insane ride there. We'd jam 3 or 4 of us in the raft and deflate it a bit so we hit the corners harder and have a better chance of it folding like a taco and hopefully throwing one of us out. I think we really go there just for that and the mega wedgie slide. Got hurt a few times but it was always on the Colorado River ride every time. Only had to see the first aid station twice so that was a plus. lol Probably the most painful thing was your feet though. My god a full day there you could barley walk the next day. I can't even tell you how many times we went there but one summer it had to be at least a dozen. it was almost every Tuesday and Thursday when we'd have the Snapple buy one get one free coupons. The coolest place in the park was the Gratto in the cliff diving pool. No one really knew about since it was kinda hidden and we only found it by accident. My all time favorite park and thing to do during the summer. Might have to go back.

Great video! I was wondering how the park was these days. I used to go here in the 80’s and 90’s, was so fun. I remember doing a front flip off the highest cliff that’s closed now and landing on my stomach, the lifeguard just looked at me and shook his head.😄 Surf Hill used to be blue and if you look to the right where all the grass is now that used to be the two expert lanes that had jumps and you got some massive air. The Alpine slide was there instead of the Mountain Coaster. Great memories, I’ll have to go back one of these days. The original cannonball was a blue tube not black like in your video, and it went underground. I went down and I guess it wasn’t as slippery as it should have been and I stopped. So I had to push with my hands till I got to the end and poked my head out, was funny. I saw someone testing the Cannonball loop but it was never opened when I went, I don’t know if I would have gone down if it was opened anyway. Motorworld was a blast as well. And I skied there in the winter, which was very weird skiing past waterslides.😄 Thanks for this video, good times!

I worked here from 2015-2017 and visited consistently as a guest since as early as 2007, so I know it extremely well. I'll give my overall thoughts first, then go through some major rides one by one. (In the reply, since it's too long to post in one comment). I agree that this is one of the best waterparks for thrill seekers. So many of the rides are truly one of a kind. As for the crowds, when I worked there, weekdays were typically quiet, but weekends were busier. You didn't mention the operations, which I think are some of the best around. We operated our rides at a higher throughput than most parks, as we could have multiple tubes on the course at Colorado River, Gauley, Thunder Run, Alpine Rush, and High Anxiety. I would always try to have the next tube loaded so I could send it down as soon as the previous one hit the clear point. On Surf Hill, we could line up the next group as soon as we sent the previous one, so as soon as the previous group exited, we would be ready to send the next one. At Six Flags waterparks, they won't even let you load on a tube slide until the previous guests are completely exited. As for the hours, they have been cut significantly since I worked there. It used to be 10:30 to 6 early and late season, and 10:30 to 7 mid season. Then it was 11 to 6 on weekdays and 10 to 7 on weekends. We even had a separate adult night event on select Friday nights where the park would reopen from 7 to 11 at night for those 21 and older. I worked this event once, and it was cool to get night rides on some of the slides during my break. Unfortunately, this event has not returned since the pandemic. We also used to have private events in the mornings before the park opened (mostly Orthodox Jewish groups). Sometimes we had just half an hour between when the event ended and public opening, and that was always very stressful for the employees. I always thought it was fun to work there. We would move around to different rides throughout the day, so there was always a change in scenery. There were often opportunities to go on rides, either during our breaks, morning test rides, or even going from one position to the next. My favorite memory has to be the ERT night that was just for employees. Everyone took the wrong tubes on different rides. It was a total free for all. Needless to say, that event didn't happen more than once. The biggest problem with the park is how many rides they've removed without replacement. In 2008, a mat slide called Sidewinder was replaced by Alpine Rush, which opened in 2009 (originally called Alpine Pipeline). After 2009, a body slide called Kamikaze was removed without replacement, leaving a massive gap between Tarzan/Cannonball and Tower (H2-Oh-No, Vortex, Vertigo). In 2014, they did add Zero G, but then in 2015, the state shut down both Tarzan and Cannonball. After 2016, the park closed Junior Rapids, and was supposed to replace it with another family area, but that got cancelled when the resort went bankrupt. In 2021, High Anxiety burned down, and they still haven't replaced it. Also, Rogue River and Thunder Falls have spent entire seasons red tagged by the state. They desperately need to reopen Tarzan and Cannonball, with appropriate modifications to be approved by the state, replace High Anxiety, fill in the hole left by Kamikaze, and build that family area to replace Junior Rapids. This would also solve the issue of the park being so top-heavy in the thrill category.

Now as for the different rides: Colorado River: This was definitely my favorite in the park, and one of my favorite to work at. The area was shaded, and only one position actually required you to guard the pool. The rest were just ride attendant positions. There were 3 pay grades (ride attendant, shallow guard, deep guard), you got paid whatever rate you were certified for, regardless of what position you worked. Since I was a deep guard, I would get paid that higher rate, even if I only worked ride attendant positions. The helmets were a pain to deal with. They kept breaking and we seemed to never have enough. I also thought they were gross. We had a bucket of water to wash them off in, that I think guests were supposed to think was some fancy disinfectant. It wasn't. It was just water we took from the top of the ride. I also noticed just how quickly the ride went through tubes. Due to how intense it was, the tubes were constantly getting deflated and needed to be refilled or replaced. We seemed to never have enough tubes by the end of the season. Back when I first started visiting the park as a guest, the tunnel was pitch black, which made it even more intense. But at some point before I started working there, they cut holes in it to install security cameras. The entire ride actually has them, as it eliminated the need to staff several positions along the layout. Many guests didn't know that, so they'd be surprised when someone would meet them at the bottom and yell at them for standing up on the ride. Thunder Run / Gauley: These rides had the same entrance, and were part of the same section for staffing, so I'll cover them together. The weirdest thing about it was the different tubes. At most parks, you take a single or a double tube depending on how many are in your party. On these rides, all single tubes went on Gauley and all double tubes went on Thunder Run. But you could ride solo in a double tube. This confused so many guests who ended up in the wrong line at the top. I had to constantly explain that they would need to take a different tube to go on the other ride. The most difficult position to work was Queue Deck, right where guests pick up the tubes. The Thunder Run tubes went over a waterfall, while guests would throw the Gauley tubes over a rope. You had to catch them and give them to the guests in line and if you didn't work fast, you'd be drowning in tubes and have a bunch of angry guests wondering why the lines were backed up. There was also a ride called Thunder Falls where you just went down a steep drop into the same pool as Thunder Run. I believe this was the second fastest ride in the park, only behind H2-Oh-No. It was often closed either due to staffing, or because the state red tagged it, but was really fun when open. Rogue River: This ride was open sporadically, sometimes being red tagged by the state for an entire year. The bottom underground portion was very fast, and could cause riders to flip over. It was modified with padding to slow people down, but I think some would still flip. I never had an issue with it though. One problem was that guests needed to walk through the pool at the bottom to access the queue entrance for Thunder Run and Gauley, and would often get too close to the slide, where riders would come out very fast. Surf Hill: Probably my second favorite in the park besides Colorado, but man that path to the top was brutal. It has a very strict no shoes, no shirt, no loose article policy. Everything other than a bathing suit had to be left at the bottom. I had to argue with so many guests over it, since you'd think it should be just like a tube slide, where you can wear or carry those things. It also had a very strict minimum weight requirement of 90 pounds. I had to argue with many parents whose kids were tall enough to go on anything else in the park, but they simply did not meet the minimum weight for Surf Hill. If you were under that minimum weight, you got stuck, and an employee would have to walk across the slide to push you through. That was not fun, and I had to do it multiple times. The reason we allowed running starts is due to how riders tended to get stuck at the top if they didn't. Whenever I rode it, I would pull up on the mat the entire way down, which meant I'd always overshoot the pool. This ride was actually SBNO from 2006, but reopened in 2012. In the early years I was going, I actually had no idea it even existed. High Anxiety: This ride was one of the first Proslide Tornado models, opening in 2003. It had a dual load station at the top, and since we always staffed the top with two attendants, if they knew what they were doing, they'd use both loading stations and get amazing throughput. The colors went from yellow to red to yellow again, and as soon as a tube got to the second yellow, we would send the next one. Since the ride was so old, the turn into the drop wasn't profiled well and would result in the tubes getting stuck unless you pushed very hard. It was exhausting work to hit the minimum interval, but I could do it cycle after cycle, and it was very satisfying keeping that line moving. Junior Rapids: This was basically a mini version of The Gauley, with single tubes, and repeated drops into pools below. What was funny was its ridiculously strict height requirement. You had to be in the range of 42 to 54 inches to ride. As such, hardly anyone could ride it, and it required 5 lifeguards to staff, which is probably what led to its closure. As mentioned above, they still need to replace it. Cannonball Falls/Tarzan Swing: These both shut down after 2015, supposedly because the state said they were too high off the water, but Bombs Away and the cliffs are both higher. These had the quirk of having unusually cold water (around 60 degrees vs 70-80 elsewhere in the park), and that combined with the deep water resulted in many people needing help from the lifeguards. I saved well over 20 people at these rides in one summer. Very refreshing on a hot day, whether I rode the ride normally, or was working at one and had to save someone. Tower (Zero-G, H2-Oh-No, Vortex, Vertigo): These were difficult to work, simply due to the fact that they were so far away from the section base. Zero-G was very finicky, and would fault often. This meant that a supervisor would have to climb up the tower to reset the controls. Eventually, they'd send one person to work it for several hours at a time, and have them bring their cell phone, which was normally against park policy to have on while in-position, and we'd call and they'd talk us through resetting the controls. It also had an enable panel at the bottom, unlike any other ride at the park. Sometimes, the attendant at the bottom would forget to press it, and the trap door wouldn't drop. If you used the radio to call the person at the bottom, that usually resulted in them getting yelled at by a supervisor for not paying attention. The other issue was loose articles. Zero G had a strict no loose article policy, just like Surf Hill. Someone stationed at the bottom of the tower was supposed to enforce this, but often they would miss stuff. If anyone showed up at the top with shoes, shirts, cell phones, or cameras, they couldn't ride. If their loose articles could get wet, we would drop them down H2-Oh-No (while the guest would ride Zero G) and signal to the lifeguard at the bottom to pick them up. This way, they didn't have to walk all the way down the tower, and it was safer than throwing stuff off the tower. The other 3 rides were not difficult to work at all, other than having to walk up there. I always preferred to ride Vertigo over Vortex, because it was much faster. While I'm disappointed in how much the park has declined with the ride removals and slashed operating hours, it will still always hold a special place in my heart due to how much time I spent here, and the fact that it was my first job. I'm glad you were able to visit and review it.

Thanks for all the history! Those late night events sound awesome. I'm not surprised a few rides at this park have been red-tagged, but I'm surprised Bombs Away hasn't and Cannonball Falls has. I agree the operations were incredible on the tube slides. The body slides and Cliff Jump had slower throughputs because a lot of people would panic at the top, but that wasn't the fault of employees.

Next time you head through Indiana you should check out Pine Lake in Berne. It reminds me a lot of this place, and is easily one of my favorite water parks. You only need a half day there.

Been going to moutain creek every year since 2006. Rooting so hard for the parks continued success. The biggest issue with it is it seems whenever the state shuts down a ride or something literally burns down it takes ages if ever to replace them with something else. The park is so slim now what use to be a whole day experience can really be done in like 2.5 hours.

I worked there in the 80’s as a life guard “Pure Chaos “ and I LOVED IT !!!!!” with the exception of getting hurt myself on the alpine slide with permanent scars on shoulder & forearm 😢. I loved motor world. It was the speed boats & Indy cars for me !!!! Had a hard time working because I was too busy riding and having fun.

I was there a lot of times, a few bumps& brushes. But a lot of fun , but a lot of people are not say a important thing about the water park. That is the water is so cold unreal cold. Yes on a hot day but this was way to cold. You had to watch your self, and not get caught up in the hype. Loved the Octoberfest.

I was in 6th or 7th grade when I went here, and let me tell you I got on "bombs away" and went first in our group and nobody knew about that plunge. I'm emotionally scarred forever and hitting the water was awful. I dont recall if there was no sign or i just ignored it. I remember the water at "canonball falls" was very VERY very cold, and there was a people mover to get you from the parking lot.

(pardon the quintuple posting) I really wish that the people who currently own the resort, over time at least, would make safer versions of Action Park originals - like what the original owners were back in control from 2014-2016 wanted to do - and keep that "you control the action" spirit, and "unique ride design idea" spirit that set the park apart. Part of me is a little optimistic that over time it could happen - since the current owner was an employee at Action Park back in the day, and is said to have a similar spirit to the Mulvihills (original owners of the park), just not as big on rushing into things.

I was 6 3/4 or so, and went in the Wave Pool - the memory of which will be etched into my mind forever, especially with a later addition of a story by my Mom about how she got into an argument with one of the lifeguards about going in to make sure I was safe (since I was on the road to overcoming severly weak muscle tone, and other issues). ​ @Canobie Coaster If I could pick a best era, I'd say that the original Action Park era was. Sure, management was full of problems - the drunk and high (and sometimes underage) staff, the lack of control over rowdy patrons, the upkeep problems with some rides, Eugene Mulvihil's financing schemes, etc - but it was also a place where you had so much variety in terms of attractions between Watwerworld, the Alpine Center, and Motorworld. The place REALLY was absolutely titanic in scale compared to what it is now, and really was a place for new ideas and rides to take shape. That part, IMO, should always be remembered AS WELL as the accident filled chaos (which, TO BE FAIR, was often patron-caused, when not caused by design issues like with the poor maintainence of the Alpine slide carts, or the original Tidal Wave Pool design. **shudders uncomfortably** you never forget the chaos of being in there when the waves are going full blast, I sure AF won't.) For a "worst" era it'd probably be 1999-2009 - though Intrawest put in some new rides that are fun, a lot of the old rides disappeared during the post-1998-season to 2009, rides that could have been just fine, and the place felt very "sterilized." I really wish some day photos could show up from that 1998-2000 era, especially since it wasn't until 2001 or so that Motorworld was actually torn down. I'd love to see what it looked like before they tore it down.

Hey, I watched your video, and it was super informative! TYSM for posting this, as I may go here in a couple weeks- I was wondering if you could clarify the shoe situation. Flip flops/water shoes are definitely needed here, as you showed the hills and pathways. You leave the shoes at the entrance of the actual ride, and then ride it down- then you walk back barefoot for the shoes? I would appreciate if you could answer me asap-TY!

@@nightisright1873 During that time IIRC the Hessian family took over the Mulvihil's share of ownership over the resort - and they were a LOT more cautious, like, Intrawest-era-levels of cautious. Joe Hessian, who owns the resort IIRC, I've heard, is not one to just jump into things, but allegedly has been described by others as being cut from the same cloth figuratively speaking. I hope can provide traction for new rides and stuff (especially since he started working at Action Park in 1994 😂)

Shame you missed out on the Rouge River. I thought it was a fun relaxing slide winding down the hill until I got to the tunnel. The slide surface turns rough (it was a foam like substance so it didn't hurt) because It is probably hard to do any maintenance because the slide goes completely under ground. The turns in there were so intense that it felt like I was being beat up in the dark and then comically dumped into the shallow pool at the end. Not a comfortable experience for sure, but it had me laughing like a maniac every time due to the the intensity shift!

The foam like surface on the final turn is meant to slow riders down. Without it, they often flipped over.

Whatever happened with Sky Caliber? I get the cannonball loop was very unsafe but the Sky Caliber was much taller and steeper and should give you enough speed to make it through the loop in one piece.

Back in 2015, both the high and low cliff jump platforms were open, and they did not have those jump platforms. Makes sense why they were added, the rock was always fairly slippery & this probably is a lot of people’s first exposure to cliff jumping.

Thanks for your report. Even though I passed on visiting here in July, I was still quite intrigued by it. For roller coasters, I love the highest thrills possible. But for waterslides, not so much. Trap door slides are about as far as I want to go. Carowinds has a couple body slides that I despise, because they are far too much for me. Oceans of Fun recently removed some slides that I hated. The slides built along the hillside at Mt Creek look like too much for me. I don't think I would enjoy the aspects that others would like about them, but that's just me.

I wish NJ would stop shutting down rides there though ... first the Cannonball Falls tube slides, then the Tarzan Swing, and one of the cliff jumps... god damn, I think they went too far in the opposite direction (the State of NJ I mean). I also am still annoyed that before the Mulvihills left the resort ownership again, they had really planned to bring thepark back to what it could have been ... had it been a bit safer. Bungee jumping, go karts, a new (and actually safe) Cannonball Loop... man, that would have been damn neat had it actually been done. **sad sigh**

Seriously, I went a few years back to Splish Splash out on Long Island - and parts of it reminded me of Action Park... that they had a slide where you drop into water similarly to Cannonball Falls (minus the tube slide aspect - here it was just an open slide), and the wave pool was definitely packing a hell of a punch compared to the renovated one at Mountain Creek today.

Went there yesterday and had a concussion as I fell head down at the end of the ride. Worst water park ever. I still fell pretty bad. May need to go to emergency to get my head checked. Suffered shooting stomach pain nausea and balance with severe headache which didn’t go away for hours even after many Tylenols. I wouldn’t recommend going to this water park mainly kids especially the cemented rides they have

I love this. But you do realize that jumping into water isn't a ride, so there's no need to review it. I'm sure you can jump and swim or you'd never have done it, but regardless: jumping into water isn't anything anyone can review imo. BTW the Bombs away slide looks to end before what looks to be about an 11' drop from the end of the slide to the splash into the pool (give or take a maximum of 2'. Look at the adults to the left of the screen for size reference) before splash landing into a pool about 13' deep (which can be seen in the sign above the water line in this video if you look closely enough; so it couldn't possibly be an 18'-20' drop into the pool, or the pool would have to be deeper than 13' in order to not become Action Park again.) ;) I just hope you don't think I'm trying to be a troll fore merely correcting you like Theme Park Predictions probably thinks. ;) Thanks again for another informative and entertaining video.

I'm going off the drop height given by the park. I'm assuming you're using the lifeguards as a reference, but they're not inline with the slide. They're further up. I did the 10 ft dive board at Knoebles and this felt significantly higher.

Mountain creek is still a good water park but Action Park in the late 80s and early 90s was probably the best water/thrill park ever to exist I live on Long Island N.Y. and went to AP at least once every summer as a kid and have so many great memories of that place, it's sad that motor world is gone.
