Anyone know any nurseries that sell native mountain laurel ?

I live in western Massachusetts….low growing Mountain Laurel very common. I hike quite a bit…and have found a few rhododendrons--away from civilization, so I am assuming they are native. I’m trying to recreate a natural understory on my property….that slopes a couple of hundred feet towards the Fort River and Connecticut River basin. So, I am transplanting pines and hemlock….and doing numerous “cuttings” of both the Laurel and Rhododendron. I know my soil pH is good, as is the humus level…and speckled sunshine and moisture are correct. Still, it is proving to be more challenging….with maybe 50% success. Also, my native stands and yard laurels show quite a bit of brown spotting towards early fall. Not nice and solid green like yours. I’ll keep “playing God” and trying. Having spent a good portion of my career as a federal wildlife officer in the Blue Ridge…I enjoyed your video!

Try cuttings in sand first. You will need to treat hemlocks ..easy root treatment to protect from devastating hemlock wooly adelgid. Glad you are planting natives! 💪👍

What is the genus species which bloom white? 😊
@natureatyourdoor7 ай бұрын
Kalamia latifolia. Only color in native mountain laurel I see. ..not to be confused with the native Rhodendron that come in two colors plus variation between!

I need a plant in my garden for a spot that gets only one hour of sunlight. Would either a mountain laurel or rhododendron fit there?
@natureatyourdoor3 жыл бұрын
Rhody s like "speckled sun" that might not be enough for either species. I might take a chance with a Rhododendron...you will need to watch for fungus due to limited sun.

@@natureatyourdoor Thanks. I am going to try a camellia this fall. If that doesn't work, then some type of nandina should.

Great information. I saw you touch the mountain laurel...is this only toxic if ingested? I am obsessed with this flower but everywhere I read it's super poisonous. 🌞
@natureatyourdoor Жыл бұрын
Yes ..only if you eat it. Perfectly safe to touch.

I thought rhododendron were deer resistant

Deer will sometimes no touch one plant for months then suddenly go for it. In Virginia I have always had problems with deer eating my Rhodendron...and the defoliation here in this forest tract is stunning! I have tried "caging" emerging rhodys around my pond for native feature shrubs and they push cages over or still manage to reach in! Devastating! Plus they ate all the native pink lady slippers to the soil surface one night!
