This scene was just brilliant. And it broke my heart too. I cried so hard. I am so happy that this film exists.

This was a heartbreaking final. I cried. Old Tao crying and dancing the same song she used to when she was young, full of hopes for the future, and now she's alone, betrayed by money, with the new generation losing its roots, but where the old pagoda always stay. Marvellous and very sad ending.

great film in general, but I must say the actor who played "Lianzi" (ex-beau), was mesmerizing. I did not even remember him speaking a line. I almost broke out in tears watching his final scenes.

Oh, Liang Jingdong! He is a great actor and did such a great job in this film, I agree!
The 1999 section of the film, the 2014 section of the film, and this final scene are absolutely spectacular filmmaking. The 2025 section is a disappointment... but I will forever remember the two distinct moments when Pet Shop Boys "Go West" plays to Tao dancing. Inspiring and Heartbreaking in equal measure.

I remember that when I was a child, the countryside in China in the 1990s was full of vitality. There were furniture makers, artists and writers, and there were all kinds of industries. Everyone believed that the mechanical processing done by my family would be better tomorrow. Although it was poor, there were many dance halls where people went dancing at night. It was after the Cultural Revolution that my parents' generation lifted it.And now the countryside is only declining. The country has become more authoritarian.😢😢

I think the 3rd segment of the film just before this finale didn't quite work as well as the other two. But everything just comes together in the last 3 minutes in pure movie magic. A lot of credit goes to Zhao Tao for carrying out the emotional weight of the film and shining through.

thank you for uploading this!!! all the trailers they made are just crap... the scene is very beautiful, and the movie just great; most people don't realize that the use he made of this music is also highly ironic;
@NorthernNightSky8 жыл бұрын
It actually is not ironic at all- the director said in an interview that this was actually the song widely played in many clubs/discos precisely at midnight at the time, and people did do synchronised dancing to it, so it's more a part of the actual history, not a commentary on anything.
@AlessandroZir8 жыл бұрын
Are you able to think I suppose? What do you think "Go West" means? Is the direction taken by the characters (such as the father) endorsed by the plot? It is TOTALLY ironic. This has nothing to do with people dancing or not dancing. People can dance with happily smiles on their faces while going straight to hell and not noticing it. They can do this syncronizing at whatever time you want... By the way, if you are able to think at all you will also notice that "being ironic" is not equivalent to "being against" or to deriding something.
@NorthernNightSky8 жыл бұрын
Maybe learn how to read and think first! the director himself said in the interview tgat young people danced to this very song which was popular at the time at midnight in discos. whether all nightclub owners in the late nineties were trying to be ironic, I would not think so. it was a fun thing to do. not everything needs to be political, you know.
@NorthernNightSky8 жыл бұрын
Also, please notice that it shows a scene when young people are just having fun, and Tao remembering the carefree time at the end which contrasts with her loneliness. not sure what you're thinking of it means.
@SteveNelsonBrigade3 жыл бұрын
@@NorthernNightSky While Jia Zhangke very famously does not speak English, it is absolutely inconceivable to think that he didn't know the translation of this song, especially its title. I don't know much Chinese, but I surely know "Yuèliang dàibiǎo wǒde xīn." That this song was popular at the time only bolsters its power in the narrative here. He and others saw this as emblematic of a generation. And as a director, he is intelligent and knows exactly what he is doing. The "Go West" metaphor -- let alone the music it is based on! -- acquires an especially barbed character in the context of the overall film. You have to be willfully obtuse to not get this. It is not exactly subtle.

This movie contains a criticism against modernity, west-centered orientalism. But definitely, the goal, or political project is not to revive the 'traditional Chinese virtue', let alone conform to CCP regime. Gist of this film is about "liberation", especially the "liberation to come".

I didn't like the ending at all, I mean... this is a great movie with a lot of work. However... *[SPOILER ALERT]* . . . What happened with her son? Did he break with his girlfriend or not? Was he going to visit his mother or to stay in Australia? It's sad I have to say this, although it's a very realistic movie and it's very good, this ending took away its complete glory.
@lucien7388 жыл бұрын
This ending is a masterpiece. All the questions you're making are justified and will furstrate you, that's part of what Jia Zhang Ke wants to deliver, even if I think, you can guess the answers.

Notes that when Tao was making dumplings in China, and there're huge amount of them, which may means that she is not live by her own, or there'll be someone come visit and have the dumplings together. However, I don't know of it still the same dog she had before.
