Hi. I'm from America and I just wanted to give you a few tips if you ever want to try this again. First, don't stand in the median. The only drivers who actually see you are the ones nearest the median and they have no place to stop safely. When you hitchhike from the median you are basically saying you don't care if the drivers get hurt as long as you get a ride. Also, beggars usually stand in the median so they can get money from both sides. Second, don't wear military style clothing. Americans are very wary of Eastern people wearing military style clothing. Third, hitchhiking in America is a lost art form due to it being illegal for safety reasons. You will rarely find one ride to take you where you want to go. When you hitchhike, you look for anyone going in your direction and the ones who stop will take you as far as they are going. The sign was a good idea. Anyone who sees it and can get you at least partially there will stop. It isn't just the safety of the hiker that needs to be a concern but also the safety of the driver. So: no median hiking, no military style clothing and don't be so picky about license plates. If they are headed in your direction and inclined to stop they will. Please be careful, my friend. You have a wonderful spirit but these are dark times in USA.

Whixer that's the difference mate. Unlike India, people go by rules in USA. Didn't you notice the speed of the cars, how can they suddenly stop in the middle of the highway, just to give lift to an Indian guy they don't know. And Americans might not have very welcoming attitude towards brown skin Asians, but calling all of them rude is unfair. Just read your comment, and you will know who is being rude.

In Russia he went to smaller cities, and towns, not in Moscow or other big cities. In USA, he is trying hitchhiking in Boston, that too at the wrong place. Also a pair of jeans and hiking shoe would have been better choice. Traffic fines can go from $100 to $500 on average, so people would be afraid of stopping just like that. Gas stations or parking lot of a big shopping complex or mall would have been a better choice. Also, Americans are used to seeing immigrants, especially in big cities. So meeting an Indian is not a big deal for them, whereas in remote Siberia, probability of meeting an Indian is almost zero, and so he was a novelty in Siberia.
@VladimirPutin-sl5qe6 жыл бұрын
I travel myself in that part of the world and you are 100% right.Being a black or brown or even yellow is a novelty and the attention you get there is enormous,whereas in USA nobody gives a flying FU** who you are or how much money you have or what you are driving.

Even if someone want to give you lift, they will not be able to. Stopping car on running road is not allowed in USA and can cause severe accident. The concept is to leave the road and park car in a parking if you want to stop.

I agree. I thought cops will come out. There was no shoulder lane there. Too dangerous for cars to stop in middle of road. Please check with your contacts on laws around us highways.

Guys, hitchhiking is not just risky but dangerous and also Illegal in many countries, you can go to jail for it. Do NOT try this unless you have an emergency. This guy is risking his life and he calls himself 'MOUNTAIN trekker' But never trekked or climbed a mountain, just an opportunistic youtuber like many other misguiding for views. You can watch his videos and experiences for fun but do not take his advice, do your homework and plan before you embark on your journey. Stay safe guys!!!

Varun bhai..I am from Virginia! The road that you were trying to hitchhike at is not the road to hitchhike. People don't usually stop on highways like i-90 as the vehicles are moving very fast. However, if you have to do it on a highway, try to do it on the ones that have some space for emergency on the right side and never stand on the left side and ask for lift as you'll have zero luck doing that. Good luck! started watching your videos from Bangladesh and still haven't stopped! You're an inspiration.

United States law states that “No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride.” It is also not advised to give strangers hitchhikers rides. His experience does not mean Americans are greedy or lack compassion. Also, he was standing a NO stopping zone. He does not understand American traffic regulations. Drivers can’t stop where he is standing.

I personally feel you shouldn't always stick on to your concept of hitchhiking. Many a times it is not even justified and becomes very embarrassing for you, as well as country you come from. Mostly people don't welcome hitchhikers. You can even get insites of places while travelling in public transport as well. That would be slightly expensive but much convenient & safe.

Varun, the reason no one stopped for you was because you were standing at an exit to the highway where there’s no shoulder for vehicles to stop. It’s illegal for a vehicle to stop on the road. Good spots would be gas stations or rest areas along the highway. Lastly, about the license plate deal - NY has tons of migrants from other states, so don’t necessarily need to flag down just the NYC yellow/black plates.

Keep making good content... few tips though i dont have much idea abt hitchhiking 1. Left lane is for over taking and high speed. Even if driver wants, they will never stop. 2. Use the right most or slowest lane, so they have enough time to spot you and use hard shoulder to stop 3. Use pit stop signs which are not too far, so you can get to your destinations through smaller rides 4. Start early in the day with enough food to allow for tiresome journeys 5. Try and speak to people at gas stations and see if someone is willing to give a ride 6. Spot the right people using your judegment and stay safe Good luck

the most important reason they didn't stop is its illegal to stop there. you were near the inner lane initially. no one stops at inner lane. that's very dangerous. then you moved to outer lane..but there was no hard shoulder to stop the vehicle. the guy who stopped was doing it illegally. Also it was a highway. They can't stop or decrease speed in that short distance without risking the vehicle behind hitting them. Understand traffic laws.

Hitch hiking was common in the USA and I am sure back in the days there were crimes associated with it as well. A family comes to the US from Punjab and elder of the family forced his grandson to stop the car because they wanted to stretch their legs. 5 or 6 family members was standing next to road like India and suddenly a truck came with full speed, resulting to road accident and death of family members. I love your channel. Stumbled on you doing Mizoram. I was looking for anything and everything I could find on Mizoram and you popped up. Been following you ever since. I am Jamaican with American citizenship and love what you do. I enjoy visiting other people and countries through your eyes, and I want to see you succeed in the USA as well, however, so far, you haven't done so well. You bummed out with that USA hiking in Cambridge, and one reason, I thought, was that where you were standing had no shoulder for a vehicle to pull over safely. I could tell you were frustrated and I kept hoping you would take a look at where you were standing and change your spot. I couldn't understand why you had abandoned your strategy of standing at a gas station. That might have helped. At least they would have gotten a chance to meet you personally, chat with you a bit and be able to contemplate risking a ride with a stranger. Those military fatigues didn't help either, and don't forget our incident on 911? You may be perceived wrongly because of your physical appearance. Another major challenge for your endeavor is that America discourages hitchhiking. It's very dangerous for anyone in America to get into a stranger's car, and very few would pick up someone they don't know. I live in Florida and you may have a bed instead of a couch anytime you are in my neighborhood. Don't give up on America, only embrace our differences. Please consider doing busses instead e.g. Greyhound, which goes into small towns all across America, and/or trains e.g. Amtrak, which travels throughout the country providing great views of the countryside and stops in small towns and cities all across America.

@MrBinny19776 жыл бұрын
Vaibhav Patil don't understand your question, but, I actually meant , camo pants and boots are not worn by all generally speaking. If you are from military background, it's understandable, but then again a military person returning home or traveling won't be standing in the middle of the road and asking for a hitchhike. Next best guess, probably a mugger, mind you a person travel on the interstate highway has few seconds to make the decision to stop or not, a great deal depends on your appearance. I hope you understand my point, then again it's just my opinion.
@stryker10156 жыл бұрын
binoj Nair yes as subtle as it may seem but you are right US is quite different from other places and people tend to immediately distance themselves from you even if some minor detail seems a bit odd and get suspicious .In India we may not pay much attention to such thing but there it matters
