Mounted Scout, US Cavalry 1943

My father (and his father) were both horse-mounted cavalry officers in the Canadian Army until 1939. The cavalry usually functioned as reconnaissance units up to and behind enemy lines. For a short time after they stopped using horses (1939) the served as motorcycle reconnaissance. After that, they became an armoured unit mainly in Sherman tanks. My grandfather because of age spent the war guarding facilities in Canada (a Japanese invasion was expected) and later guarding German prisioners in Alberta. My father's regiment was in heavy fighting in Sicily, Italy and later moved to the Netherlands and Belgium. His regiment has served with distiction right up to today in several wars and peace keeping actions.

i spent my career as a scout, both light and mechanized , scouting has changed so much but still uses the same thing, size , activity, location, and time, the cavalry is still kicking @ass. if you aint cav, you aint sh!t haha be easy brothers

The film placed the time as 1943 an the enemy was German if they had mounted scouts would have been in action at Sicily or Italy now I'm curious definitely would like to learn more 👍

Yes, the US army continued to train horse cavalry throughout and after the war. The U.S Constabulary in Germany and Austria used mounted horse platoons for border control and crowd control. The most famous being the Berlin Horse Platoon.

@@samcox2257 I thought they destroyed all or most of the horses during the 30,s when they mechanised,. Thanks I just learned something .PS the SADF used horse units in combat during the BUSHWAR .

@@willemventer3935 not at all, the US still kept them on the books throughout the war. The 10th Mountain had a horse mounted recon troop in Italy as did the the 3rd Infantry Division. The 112th cavalry deployed to Noumea a horsed regiment. In the post war years the ROK horse cavalry was trained by GI horse soldiers.
