As soon as I saw the car body let alone subframe, I thought it looked worryingly flimsy. I couldn't believe it could cope with a big engine and aggressive driving. Seemed like it would fold in on itself. Looking forward to seeing how strength is added to such a vehicle.

For the exhaust system, the folks over at DieselPumpUK made a billet exhaust for an OM606. Although no where near the same engine- the "piping" was so quaint and sleek that I feel as though it could help your application- since it seems as though there's only 4.5" of clearance. @@slicktop2jz855 I had a NA Barra in my FG Ute. Ded gas, with the ancient E-gas system which I hated. While the rest of the car kind of fell apart around it the Barra stayed strong. Was going to upgrade to an ECo LPI ute after the FG was written off but seems LPG is a thing of the past here now. Interesting 2J swap you have there as well, still reckon the 2J is the king of the straigh six hill but the Barra not far behind.

Good advice from AC tech - if you're going to reuse AC plug the hoses. Anything that gets in there (dirt/bugs) could make your life miserable, when it finally clogs something (usually expansion valve) and you have to tear half of the car apart to get to it.

I’m confused why you didn’t remove material from the ac and alternator bracket rather than from ac and alternator itself. Removing material from the brackets means the owner can easily buy a new ac or alternator from the parts store. The way you did it he well have to have the ac or alternator rebuilt or buy new and take it to a machine shop. Beside the ac and alternator being close to the subframe if they needed to be replaced it looks the engine would have to be raised. Are you planning on making more room for ease of repairs?
@fazeobama88723 жыл бұрын
i dont think the owner cares, as long as its done and possible

Very few cars at this level of modification are built for serviceability. Odds are good when servicing happens, the car will go to XF or a similarly qualified shop. This isn't the kind of car that you take back to Merc to get an alt swap.

Any plans for the wheels? Please don't put too large and non contemporary rims on this car! I would prefer the 15" version of the original bundt alloys, or possibly 16" Lorinser LOs or Pentas. Means you can't use the brakes from the donor car but there are beefy enough aftermarket brakes available that would fit inside a 15" or 16" rim.
@joakimquensel5973 жыл бұрын
Or if you really think you need to go larger, there is a 17" replica version on the R129 "gullideckel " rim that is very similar in design to the original 15" R107 rim on the 1986-89 facelift model.
@simolajustice65553 жыл бұрын
Lorinser would fit the car perfectly..they are classy and wild at the same time
@joakimquensel5973 жыл бұрын
@@simolajustice6555 Yeah I had those on my 1989 300SL. Very difficult to find those wheels back then (early 2000) but now they started to make them again a few years ago! I.e. the real stuff, no replica.
@joakimquensel5973 жыл бұрын
But original bundts (the 15" version) would be even cooler on this car, a total sleeper. Or the 15" version of the steel hubcaps the were fitted as standard equipment (14" version) on the early 107 SL. I have also seen custom 16" and 17" split wheels made from the original bundts alloys, they are also pretty nice! So many options... But just don't go with modern wheels!

That subframe is not engineered to handle that much torque. Would have swapped the 63 subframe with custom brackets to tie body. Just look at those flimsy shock and antiquated suspension. All that work for it to crack in half after several shock loads.

@hanshoogendyk22033 жыл бұрын
Usually when you fit a big engine in a smaller car the engine gets set back as far as possible, it's not as tho they have to worry about a rear distributor etc so why leave 2" or 50 mm clearance? Would not have needed so much cutting on the cross member to start with, and if you going to cut up a cross member start with a dummy one, so you can do a very tidy proper one to finish, just saves a lot of time and missery later
@bgh187s2k3 жыл бұрын
The problem with cutting the Alternator and AC compressor is that you've now made them one off items which are now not easily swappable if failure occurs.

After closing the air gap between the engine and the accessories, the longevity of those parts is gone. Also the belt needs to be custom size, so the next maintenance will be soon, and painful. A lot easier and less painful job would have been customizing the subframe and subframe mounts, as in re-fitting the C63 subframe into that old rust bucket.

I have no experience from this kind if build but that was nu thought as well, reuse as much as possible of the suspension and chassis components from the donor car. Except the brakes, the must be small enough to fit original or contemporary tuning wheels (e.g. Lorinser LO), large modern rims would completely ruin the looks of this car.
