I find it heartening that you are building (rebuilding?) this track roadster the way it would of been done back in the day. The first super modified that I drove was built in 1964 so I have some concept of how they were built. ( I drove it in the early 80s in a class that was structured to run the old straight up cars.) Most of the early modifieds and track roadsters were all one offs with no two cars being exactly the same. And yes I am that old, 80 this last March.🤠🏁

10 videos on this car from now, when it becomes time to put gauges in the old racer, make sure that you clock them so that each needle points straight up when the engine is on full song. That will make the build all the more historically accurate.

That had to be some experience, racing that rod with just some perforated metal as a floorboard. Reminds me of when I as a kid in the late 60s and my two brothers and me, rode in my uncle’s 1960 Chevy station wagon. The back floor boards were rusted out and he had pieces of plywood in it place. But, there were still a couple of hole where you could see the road going by, underneath, quite an amazing thing for a kid to see.

My first time at 100 mph was in a '58 Dodge.belonging to a friend's dad. A nice man with no knowledge of automobiles. Whatever wreck the used car salesman told him he should have, he bought! That car had almost no floor pan left; only the mats! A new expressway segment had just opened quietly, and there was no traffic that evening. We decided to see how fast the Dodge would go. Eventually it topped 100 and all the while I was watching the pavement flashing by below my feet!

For a trans mount you might look at the crossmember on an F1 bed or box, I forgot exactly where from under the box I took the thing, I shaved the flanges down and it's super strong, I am installing 450 HP in my F1 hotrod. this is an over the top 14 year project too many things done to it can't even remember what or exactly why I changed some of it. but building is fun, Wear Your safety glasses you only get one set of eyes.

Hey Matt, So far the roadster looks pretty correct for a vintage dirt track car. I am still wondering where the cooling will happen as there is no room for a fan on the water pump. But if it is not going to be a 20 lap or greater race it may not need cooling. Any way, good to see the car getting some attention. Work Safe, Be Well Enjoy Life
@CAROLDDISCOVER-2025 Жыл бұрын
Inline Flathead 6 with a novel The interesting approach. It goes back to Days of using what you have and racing and bracket classes. For anybody who didn't take this seriously look at GM. You can look at Ford and I believe Chrysler's well. Also many European models. GM made sprint series cars. They had a six-cylinder in-line 6 with overhead valve. They were designed to fit the requirements of a specific race circuit. Afterwards they decided not to piss fate. But they sold a lot of overhead cam 6 cylinder Firebirds GTOs and so forth. Blue flame 6 in the original Corvette 235 CID inline 6. Help bridge the gap from when this car was new about 100 years ago. The Buick Grand national had a V6. So there's plenty of interest over time and making a thrifty engine go fast. Thanks for doing this project.

I think I would have made the trans mount bolt onto the frame to make it easier to get the trans out later .Just a thought .
@IronTrapGarage Жыл бұрын
You can unbolt the trans mount from the trans and the cross member. Gives you room to half the back of the engine up and remove the trans. But most of these cars it’s easier to pull the engine and trans as a unit. It’s a torque tube car. No matter what you’re either removing the rear and torque tube in one shot or the engine and trans in one shot.

When we were young we wouldn't take a running 6 or 4 door for free. I put a last gen Ford 300 6, all synchro 3 speed, 3:10 9 inch in my Essex 4 door model super 6 cause that engine is the actual super 6 and wanted a smoother cruiser instead of another radical rod. Required stretching the car 6 inches which actually looks better. Inline engines are pleasant smooth tuggers in light vehicles. Love yer work..... well except that chain hoist.
@ldnwholesale8552 Жыл бұрын
That crossmember should bolt to the chassis so you can get the gearbox out
@IronTrapGarage Жыл бұрын
You can get the gearbox out. The motor mount unbolts from the trans and the cross member allowing the trans to drop down as far as you need or lift up. Not that it matters you have to pull the rear or the entire drivetrain on a torque tube car regardless to get the trans out..
@billy2534 Жыл бұрын
Just wondering why you wouldn't just do a little pounding on the sheet metal to get more carb clearance. Not like it's virgin metal...
@IronTrapGarage Жыл бұрын
It isn’t sheet metal that needs “pounding” it’s round bar stock that’s been welded into the body to strengthen it. Plus why smash on the sheet metal when I can do some small modifications that work/look better and are less crude. Just because we’re working on an old race car doesn’t mean we have to do ultra crude work.
