A very interesting video to me as I often went to Mountsorrel with my parents to picnic in the 1950s. The quarry railway was almost derelict in the late 50s and in one of the cuttings there was a line of wagons all wooden bodied 10 ton open wagons just left there rotting away. Later British Railways began using Mountsorrel Granite as ballast in big train loads via the sidings on the Midland Main Line. I think that was when the conveyor system was put in to replace the railway which I seem to recall had a small diesel loco working on it. The quarry was extended and began to remove the stone under what was Buddon Wood which is quite close to Swithland Reservoir dam. The planning permission was hotly contested at the time as it would completely destroy the remaining part of Buddon Wood. I presume that by now it has pretty much gone. The connection to the GCR has been relaid by the GC heritage line as a branch line from Swithland. When I was young it was just derelict and some of the track had been removed. Must have been a very busy area at its heyday.

I run around this ressy all the time and obssessed with the victorian pump house and what lays beneth. Would love to get down there. I am also from mountsorrel and love the 1860 bridge, nice also to see others have an interest in it. You are right about the victorians, everything they did was ornate and beautifull. Thanks for the great video.

I have kayaked under that bridge on the river soar! We got out of your boats and had a look see, and a bit of a break. Later we accidentally went under another bridge that carries the same conveyor belt and it was very low, and treacherous 🤣 conveyor was running and had rocks falling off it!

@@LeiceExplore loved the video as always forgot to mention before! Yeah look into getting a ‘play boat’ because they’re much smaller nosed, easier to manoeuvre in a tight spot even with no paddles! I’m thinking flooded bunkers and caves and the like! 😏

On my research I couldn't find out if the mineral line at Mountsorrel quarry was accessible between the GCR and the Midland at the same time, meaning you could take a wagon/train all the way from Loughborough (Midland) to Leicester (Central)! As the quarry is slowly dilapidating in the stone that is being taken from it, the surface changes and the positions of the track constantly change. So it's always been difficult to see the evolving quarry except on maps 10 years apart. Interestingly, I've seen a photo taken from the 1860 railway bridge looking toward the quarry and there stands a windmill on the rocks which have long been blasted from the ground.
@LeiceExplore2 жыл бұрын
As you say buddy, the whole of that area has changed. Me and Dave were a bit naughty and took a closer look at the quarry lol...It's frightening!

The bridge seen in the third old photo looks like the one near the Rothley and Mountsorrel community centre, the cutting has been widened at some point.

Also near the switland rail bridge you are showing is the bridge they filmed the great train robbery on for the film buster. For permission to film the tripper you need access to land owned by tarmac leased to city transair opposite the cafe

You have missed the best parts of mountsorrel off. Castle hill, war memorial, tunnel to the old castle etc The 1860 bridge does not feed the block works. It feeds tarmacs rail dept mainly. Mountsorrel supplies network rail with 1 million ton of ballast per year. You could make a much better video with the correct info and legal access. The pipe under the ressie leads to cropston res.

I haven't missed everything thing off! We're going back, and as for the castle we know some quite interesting info that we couldn't do on the day that we need permission for because this was an off the cuff vid that wasn't planned!
