Thank you so much for doing this! I hope you're able to make many more. I've been on a couple of behind the scenes tours in museums, but it's not something that is common place. And what stays preserved until needed is every bit as fascinating as the collections we do see!

The painting was of Louise Cunningham, the founder of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association. Since none of you would be there today at Mount Vernon, it would have been nice to tell the public of her importance to Mount Vernon.

Vie Ma. Hamburgers were no invented until around 1889 or whenever the St Louis World's Fair was. Burger King (or what became Burger King) was not around until about the 1940-1950 period. As far as the Wig business-- that is a bunch of malarkey. George Washington wore wigs just as men in business wear ties today. He may not have like them but being a descendent of English aristocrats, it was required from the time of Louis XIV, king of France who was bald, til approximately 1820 for men of the Aristocratic class to wear wigs until American President Madison was the last to wear one in Office. It is still required of the British Judiciary and apparently other countries. George Washington's Aristocratic lineage stems from the Dukes of Devonshire and Princess Diana's family. The Washington's had fallen on hard times ( don't know exactly why but probably due to the gambling that was the rage of those times) and were very poor. The Duke of that time felt sorry for them as the Washington's had become an embarrassment because of their poverty and put them up in a house as tenant farmers of the Duke. They saw the opportunity of regaining their wealth in America and land---and immigrated to what is now America and acquired much of Western Virginia and the tidewater area. Sorry to say much of which was stolen from American first nation people's. However, the European people of that day, in a clash of cultures did not see it that way. The idea of owning land was foreign to the native people's of that time. What mattered to them as hunter-gatherers was to be able to have nature to provide all their needs along with what themselves could provide through agriculture as it had for more than 20,000 years before. They had no court houses to record deeds and in terms of European view had no written language and things were passed down orally. Therefore with supposedly no native legal system --- the land was free for the taking. (They did have pictograph writing and counted their histories with fantastically memorized oral and ' ownerships' in knots and had. fantastic memories whose contents would make a 1000 page books if written down -- so who was ignorant--- I say the bigoted Europeans)

Stop calling people names. Gen. Washington wouldn't. I agree with you that he was a great man, and deserves to be remembered with honor, and studied much more deeply than he is. We need to live up to his example. I am a liberal, but Washington's greatness is not limited by our partisan disputes. He was first and foremost, a patriot who did what was best for his country, as he understood it. And he respected everyone, even those who disagreed with him.

Washington was a simple man, but he married money and that made his position in life possible. Remember, when he died, many of his 330 slaves were busy distilling over 15,000 gallons of alcohol. Doesn't say much for his morals.
