Felix - I played a lot of State tournaments before the age of 21. I am glad you are brave enough to show this lesson with Patrick. Your cross court BH needs help. You want it to be 90+% cross court into the opponent's BH corner. Almost all of your BHs are hitting center court. The 2HBH is complex. I think you may be stuck in the "lefty FH" mode. For direction, think of your right hand knuckles leading the way (Agassi has a good video on YT explaining this). And get the right arm up quickly. To learn this, you have to hit slower (60% pace) and work on accuracy (cross court, within 3 feet of each sideline). You look way too tight, and your swing is way too fast (you hit a few 5+ feet out). Slow everything down and work on accuracy. High topspin over the net is fine as long as they go into the corner. That is where you want your opponent to hit most of his shots. Use the knuckles for direction. I cannot see your grip but you need a little space between the hands on the grip (an inch) to get a smooth wrist drop (and avoid tightness). Hope that helps. I know one day I will see you wearing opponents down hitting BHs into their BH corner all day long. Best wishes.

Felix this was another great video! I'm also glad that you are working on your backhand and backhand slice, as those are also some of my weakest points and what I am currently working on. This was a great lesson for me and to see what Patrick had to say to you about your backhand I definitely took note of that and will apply what he said to help my backhand get better. Keep up the hard work! That ATP point is right around the corner! Thank you for the awesome content!

I'm glad you chose to practice these things with this extremely knowledgeable coach. I have said on multiple threads that your backhand is landing way too short. Patrick instantly picked up on your weaknesses, but the impressive thing was, how quickly you responded to his tips. With this advice, you will have to rename this series from "Road to 1 ATP point" to "Road to first ITF tournament win".

Wow I'm not going to lie, I've been playing tennis (not well mind you) since I was in the 9th grade at age 14ish with very inconsistent coaching and I've never really been advised on where to make my contact on my back hand slice. Patrick was right about keeping the swinging arm extended on the slice. The ball will float if you get under it instead of through it. Another thing is to stay low and still using your leg muscles. Don’t come up too quickly or the ball will go flying.

This is not going to be a popular remark but Moratoglou's advice on the backhand slice is not in line with modern professional slice technique. Professionals do not follow through in the direction of the shot but instead make a half circle (or a U shape) starting high left, going down anf up again high right (for a rightie). You can see this technique explained on Intuitive Tennis's channel but you can observe this for yourself in matches by frequent slicers, like Federer, or Thiem, or any pro really. I've seen Moratoglou give the same (wrong) advice to Holger Rune for what seems to be a promotional video and you can see Rune change his slice technique on request but then gradually "falling" back into the "wrong" technique which is actually the correct, or at least modern, technique. And the strange thing is, PM doesn't correct him, because the slice is obviously very good. I'm a nobody and PM is a professional coach, so I'm not expecting a lot of sympathy here but I can't help noticing what I observe. I'm dumbstruck on why a professional coach would teach (aspiring) professionals a traditional technique which has long evolved since. If he were coaching beginners then I could accept the traditional technique is more simple to acquire. But here he's teaching a guy who's going for ATP strength - not to speak of Rune. I'd love to see other opinions, if possible by Felix himself, on why PM would do this, or if there's another reason why I'm wrong here.

There’s a time and place for every kind of slice honestly.

Respectfully disagree with your comment. I did watch Intuitive Tennis's slice instruction for his 4.5 level student. I don't think Intuitive Tennis and Patrick M. are disagreeing at all. What both of them asked the students to do sounded the same to me, just using different words to describe it. Patrick M. didn't say the racket should go forward towards the target and not to make the "U". Instead, Patrick M. said the "body" should follow into where the player wants the ball to go while the arm is doing the slice motion. You can see from their demonstration that they both showed/asked the students to make contact with the ball next to the body, not in front of the body. Further, you can see that Patrick M. showed the student to do the "U" shape (ie: High-to-Low-to-High) swing path, see 6:08 and watch how the student's arm move (ie: U shape) but also watch where the body is following into (ie: following the direction of the target). I think the reason Patrick M. talks about the body as the main focus is because his students are much higher level pros/semi-pros, not a 4.5 dude, and his instruction has another layer or two of nuances beyond the basic technique.
@knotwilg35962 жыл бұрын
@@andyhung424able Thanks for the thoughtful response. I agree there are commonalities between both instructions, like making contact to the side of the body, but I seem to remember Nik Aracic discourages the follow through in the direction of the shot, recommending the U shape instead. I'll look it up again. Cheers.

Hello Felix! Regarding your backhand slice: try a slightly more closed grip and move more through (forward) the ball (not too much downwards). On contact your ball will come out more solid/aggressive/lower and definitely not float. Give it a try! :) Ps: I am a former national coach at a European federation with over 25 years experience working with pros. Ps: this is my son's channel! :)

Our head weighs about 10% of our overall body weight. What we do with our head mid-shot massively influences mechanics and the ball's trajectory...
@shawnogg82082 жыл бұрын
Very good lesson. For better integration: Your right arm and/or grip is too tense at the very beginning(!) of the takeback/turn out of the ready position. Try to use your left arm/hand a bit more here. These are nuances at this level of skill, since it is your style and you still have to be able to move your legs with confidence. But learn to move with this slightly changed tension first as it triggers and favours the rest he told you. You can rewatch the session and focus on the good shots where exactly a bit of what i mean happened.

Your backhand stroke looks quite smooth. I am surprised Patrick did not tell you to stop backing up. When you back up, often your weight is falling backwards, your contact is above the shoulder, and you are losing court position - all bad things. I know holding your position is tougher but that is how you take time away from your opponents and create better angles - very good things. If you practice taking the ball on the rise every day, you will get very comfortable doing it. Best wishes.

"doht fall back! when yu receive a deep ball or a loopy ball on yu bh side, step _forward_ and take the ball on the rise, i.e. early. never fall back, see Agassi or Alcaraz" ... said the coach. this advice is technically easier to follow in table tennis than in tennis but the principle is the same.

To me this would be confusing. A very simple concept is that almost every tennis shot is a swing, including the slice. To get pace you need to incorporate body rotation about the axis of rotation, which is the mid line. So whether you slice cross court or down the line. You still need the rotation of the body. The angle of the racquet face determines the direction of the ball. It's not just for the cross court that you rotate the body. Look at the federer slice down the line, or the down the line slice drop shot. Body rotation is always there. Body rotation gives you the pace. The swing path determines how high the ball is over the net, and angle of racquet face determines direction.
