After many requests, here is how I teach my mice to play basketball.
This trick is quite difficult, so you and your mice (rats/hamster/gerbils/...) should already have some experience in trick training.
And remember that species-appropriate keeping is the basis for any trick training, only then they can develop the intelligence and creativity they need.

Apparently mice find trick-solving very fulfilling. Not just the treat, but the rush of solving a puzzle and being praised and rewarded for it. They feel like they're a successful mouse being and they're happy to be pleasing you!

Thank you so very much for making this how-to video. It's very clear and easy to follow. How long would you concentrate on each step for? (For example, interacting with the ball. Once he/she has picked up the ball, do you finish training for the day? or keep doing it until they repeat the behaviour x amount of times? Then how long would you continue with that one step, let the mouse just focus on picking up the ball for a week, then move on? or carry on right to the next step once they've got the first one?

I absolutely love watching your videos. I have a little girl mouse named Tilly. We purchased her about 4 months ago. She is quite tame and I would like to try to train her to do a trick or two. Have I waited too long? What do you give them as a reward. When do you use the clicker? You noted that this trick is very difficult. Which one is a good starter trick? Thanks for any info that you can share.

She just understands what I want from her. Experienced mice usually don't need the help of the hand at all (and when the basket is very small, like in another of my videos, it wouldn't be possible anyway), it's enough to point a finger at it.
