"Itatim" is a name of Tupi origin that means "stone beak", it is a reference to Morro da Ponta Aguda, a geographic elevation near the city.
The municipality was created in 1989, its population is estimated at 14 539 inhabitants in 2020.
Itatim consists essentially of crystalline rocks.
The climate is typically semi-arid, the municipality is fully inserted in the Polígono das Secas, average rainfall is around 551 mm per year.
The municipality was initially inhabited by Cariris and Sabujás Indians, who were gradually expelled by the pioneers who began to inhabit the region, and also by enslaved blacks who fled from the colonels' farms.
