One of the coolest things Prince did after Joel recalled him was get up on his hind legs and think about jumping on Joel, but Prince stopped in mid-air and turned the other way. Prince has been walked into one too many times and has no interest in it happening again.

@@alisonmeldrum8003 That’s what he means by “walked into”. Joel “walks into” the dog or gently “knees” the dog to teach him jumping on people is unacceptable. Either way, I love Joel and his methods. He’s not on the softest end of the spectrum where trainers say corrections are bad (which is ridiculous). But he’s also not on the harshest end either. He tailors the intensity and method depending on the dog, but he’s consistent enough where you can learn to do the same thing with your dogs.

Interesting. I have herding collies with expansive pastures. I teach them recall by randomly calling their name while on a walk to come to me. When they do, I put them in a sit for 5-10 seconds. Then, I profusely praise them and send them away. It is very reliable until...rabbits. Once my collies are in hot pursuit of a wild rabbit in a huge pasture, there is nothing that can persuade their adrenaline bathed brains to hear me. They even let out this high pitched yell as they sprint to catch it. They are worse than Black Friday shoppers racing through a store to snag a 50% off TV.

That high level of drive is really hard to control. I would use an E-collar, but maybe you can make the go get method if you have a smaller place where your dog is reachable. Maybe you can throw a ball and recall the dog in the middle of his sprint towards it to make he stop in the middle of simulated prey drive hunt. That's a start.

😂 There is no cheating because there isn't a set of rules to follow regarding behaviour, except maybe being relatively calm and assertive and have clear communication. But each dog might react differently also and you got be prepared to change methods.

And I also did the go get method to my friend boxer who thought it was a game, except we were in the forest, it took me 5 mins and then she realised that ohh shit that crazy lady does not play with me, so now if anyone calls her, she is immediately there ! Thank you for your great content. I was a trainer years ago, stepped away for a few years and am now back at it for about 6 months now. Where I work we use a style that branched off from Cesar and his work a decade ago (I dont know if you also are using his methods or just using knowledge from years of experience, or both). Your videos have been a great source of comparison and learning so that I can see a different perspective on similar concepts. Implementing your tips and tricks have made my level of skill double overnight! Trying to explain the ideas to clients is a different challenge. But I admire your bravery for going out on the internet to teach "assertive" training in a world where dogs have been humanized onto such a pedestal and I thank you for that.

So why Would you go to a dog park if your dog does not have a reliable recall. In my city the sign outside the park states that your dog must have a reliable recall. The point of a Training a reliable recall is to ensure your dog’s safety In any environment including off leash. This training would obviously be useless unless in a small contained area.

You've been the one real trainer I have seen that can legitimately help me. Positive reinforcement has not helped me, at all. My dogs in training to be a service dog, and things started put really good, but he's very stubborn. He knows what I'm asking, but it seems like he just thinks he doesn't need to listen to me. It's bizarre, because truth be told, I'm the only person he legitimately listens too, but I see it the most during training, after like 5-10 minutes, he just decides he doesn't want to listen anymore, and basically shuts down. I have no clue what to do anymore, and I'm getting really frustrated

Not a Kool-Aid drinker myself (following the trendy trainer) 🙄I've always said - ANYONE can show perfect behavior in a video. You do it enough times; you can isolate one on camera. I really like the ugly beginnings, the work, the pretty good behavior. And esp the great behavior that then regresses IF the handler isn't consistent and then the rebuild. That's a trainer's philosophy I want to explore more!

Love this!!! I have started doing this with my older dog who has learned to use his size to his advantage when he doesn’t want to listen to go out potty. Now I will continue to get him and make him get up to go do what I asked rather than just allow him to decide not to listen & lay down. I just got an e-collar for my puppy to assist me with the recall as well as other behaviors I am working with him to correct but I still will use the go get method as he is being conditioned on the collar! I have a SUPER prey reactive hound mix. He's got treeing walker in him, ysee, and we have two pine trees and a fence, so... When he's caught a scent, there's very little we can do to gain his attention. It's not a game, he's just inconsolably focused on the chase. Snagging his collar on one of the runarounds and forcing his attention is just about the only way to get him in the house. Holding the collar like this is what we were taught to do in obedience classes as a correction (trainer had AKC obedience trial champs and taught from the ground up). Glad to know I'm not missing some big trick to control him! Edit: He's about five different coonhound/foxhound/prey reactive hounds on the one side, and great pyr on the other. He's 80+ lbs. Used to be very very pull-y on leash. Main owners are over 60 and would break something if they got dragged or fell because he cut across them. We literally couldn't afford to put up with his BS. Training is what saved him from being an owner surrender back to the shelter.

Thank you! This is my main problem with our dog! He would get out of our back yard and run away from everyone. I told the kids we would just have to run him down and get him. This is much easier if neighbors have fenced in yards so we could corner him. Since we started doing this he seems a little better. I tried this with my 2 yr old male GSD. I have about half an acre that is fenced off. I could not catch him the first time after 5 mins of chasing. The second time, I tried chasing for a few minutes, then I tried the sit command and eventually got him by the collar. He bared his teeth. I wish you were closer because have I got the dog for you. I'd love to book him in for a session or two. He is in a completely different class when it comes to simply not listening, leash pulling, etc. Anyway, love your channel, keep it up.

I live in almost outback Queensland Australia on an 80 acres cattle farm. I took my dogs for a free range walk/run across paddocks thinking I had my three Staffies on recall. My little English Staffy caught scent of a Red-Belly Snake laying in the grass in the sun. I lost her and it nearly killed me. We don’t have dog trainers out here other than one self-acclaimed positive reinforcement trainer. My first thought after cutting that enquiry short was ood luck with reactive Staffies/Anstaffs! I’ve been following you for a little while Joel as I’ve only recently come across your channel and your videos are on point. My AmStaff was stubborn as hell and it was all down to my slackness that she got that way. Also the fact I deployed 3 times and mum house sat my dogs for me. All training went out the window after the third deployment. I spent my first dinner home pushing my dogs out from around my feet. They’d never done that but mum had been feeding them from the table. The local dog Walker (in city at the time) would just let them drag her around the block. I’ve since trained my AmStaff on a gentle leader and have done everything in your training video on them. She went from dragging me virtually to being beside my pant seam 😀 I’m lucky she’s not food motivated as it’s made me think to use basic commands as you do and not over complicate training rather than ‘having conversations’ and begging her. We will start recall tomorrow. We NEED more trainers like you in Australia ❤️

Hi Joel, having watched a lot of videos has shed different light on all sorts of scenarios when training my 3 year old intact male border collie from when he was a puppy. Including the no nonsense go get method and overall training/living life has really helped in having an awesome dog! Big thank you from the Netherlands here! My dog has a 95% solid recall. 95% as I notice that since half a he starts doing the following when called: Keep sniffing at a great distance for a few seconds or even longer if the smell is interesting, then mark/pee and only after that he comes bolting toward me in a straight line without further hesitation and sit in front of me as he knows is expected. The go get method is at this point almost impossible due to the distance and he knows it so he will come running (whenever he is ready). I feel I should not grab him after he runs towards me full of passion to do well. Most people around me are already impressed with the recall but I feel he needs quite some leadership as he likes to make his own plan and can sometimes get in trouble with off leash dogs with no owner in sight. So I really want to prevent this to become the beginning of him ‘doing his own thing’ for many (safety) reasons I probably don’t have to explain. Also the comment is long enough already ;) Is there any advice you could give? For now I am trying to make recall more fun and unexpected. Which works in super swift response, but not when smell is involved.

Treats do work great for this though. But only if they make the decision to come on the first call, and straight back. I also use them to "trade" their freedom for a cookie, so that they don't feel punished for coming. It's not completely necessary, but it doesn't hurt either. I also do a lot of recalls in the dog park where I let them go again right after, so they don't start assuming that they're being leashed when I call them. I also like, and I think you mentioned this in another video way back, getting them and bringing them back to the spot that I called them if they don't listen. Then I have the whole X distance to let them feel the energy in my arm as you call it. Sometimes it's too far, then I figure after 20 meters my point has been made. That's big too.

Joel, we adopted a dog 7 weeks ago and I've been watching your videos. Our Jake no doubt a runner and runs like the wind. He got away from my hubby in area that's unknown to all of us. My.hubby followed on foot and I in the car as I had an Injury that was healing. When I did meet up with them. Got out of the car. Yelled Jake come very firmly. He did come. Trained a fetch with our now 11mo Irish setter doodle puppy after we got him about 4 mos ago, with a leash and treats and it went pretty ok. It’s deteriorated over the last few weeks, he won’t come back, runs around like it’s a game. I’m getting frustrated, hating trying to go back to a leash and treats since we’ve already done this. After two go-gets yesterday with me keeping my cool, we’ve had better games of fetch than we’ve had in weeks. This with a combo of “never let them blow you off” is making a huge, fast difference. OMG, Thank you. I have a 2 yr.old and an 1 1/2 yr old both boxer's girls and need them to come when call. I will be working more now with them . Don't get me wrong, they come if i say who wants a good girl ( Treat). We have one acre fenced in backyard and live on 71 acre's, but want them to come right a way when I call. Hi Joel, I admire your techniques and I believe your recall method is very effective. However, there is another aspect of recall which you might have overlooked and that is the work-dog. Dogs that have been bred to work, wether it is hunting, retrieving or herding, get a certain type of reinforcement from completing/doing this job, that exceeds the reinforcements dogs get from dog play and interesting smells in the forest. I have a Border collie that I taught to play fetch at a young age (So retrieving instead of her herding heritage!). She is so focused and interested in the game, that the reinforcement of me throwing the ball and her retrieving it is so good, that she does it in EVERY situation. Ofcourse this took some time, but the perfect recall, literally 100%, was achieved at around 7 months of age. I do believe combining your go get method with something like this would be golden, but I thought it was worth a mention! Thank you for your awesome content.

I've always had akitas and gsd's since the early 90's and found the gsd's so easy to train perfect recall to.. whilst the akitas tend to go deaf when being recalled. Your absolutely right when you say never let the dog blow you off. I'd just like to add ... as some owners do not seem to know, dogs are more sensitive than most people realise (certain breeds more than others) and pick up on the slightest changes in our actions and emotions.. so never train yor dog when you are in an emotional state, be it sad or angry, it is counter productive to training and not fair to your dog. Nice to see a trainer who doesn't always need to stuff a few kilos of treats into a dog to train it as well. I watch alot of your vids mainly because of your dog Prince, it's so obvious he loves you and their is a very special bond between the two of you.

Just found your channel and am anxious to get started with my 10 month old chihuahua. I've had a trainer to the house a few times, and he does pretty well, as long as a treat is involved. No treat? He totally blows me off. Now that he's a little older I want to work with him on my own, using your methods. I've watched quite a few other training videos, but your approach seems like a good fit. BTW, I do firmly believe that training a dog is mostly about training the owner in handling the dog. We'll see how it goes.

Your basic concept is good. I don't ever let my dog blow away from me after a recall until I release her. Also when your giving commands close to the dog your very loud. The quieter the better. You'll come across as more confident and in control. Loud commands are ultimately because your worried the dog will not perform the behavior. The dog will listen better to a quieter tone as well vs be annoyed by unpleasant harsh commands.

Looking forward to trying this in a few months when my dog is a little older. Thank you for showing how it doesn't work the first time. I've been looking for a trainer that doesn't show a dog that they have been doing multiple sessions with to demonstrate a training method.

I have a 14 months old male Cane Corso he's a big baby i take him to the park he's a totally different dog he ignores me and won't listen to me for nothing he doesn't run off or away from me he stays to where he has eyes on me but I definitely am fixing to watch this i trained him when I first got him at 7 weeks old and I just stopped after a while now I'm learning so much more and would give anything to go back but without Micheal J Fox and Doc I don't think that's ever going to happen 😂 but enough of me running my yapper time to watch the video kuddos to you my friend!

Started watching your videos a few days ago because I was annoyed with carry treats with me everywhere. I adopted a 1.5 year old not neutered dog with almost zero training other than sit. A week later he walks 90% leash perfect, comes 50% of the time and we are working on leave it and off-leash walking. I’m your biggest fan! Thanks so much!

I like that you show with untrained dogs. It does us no good when other trainers show us with trained dogs like ok but how did you do it? What if this or that happens? You show us the process and that’s the biggest help to us so thank you.
