Lots of jazz guitar tuition on KZbin but many of them seem to over complicate things with too much jargon and a need to display their knowledge of theory etc. I guess that works for some people. This on the other hand is clear and simple but very well explained and without losing any of the detail required. Good teacher 👍👍👍

Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m trying to work up a slower jazz version (a la Diana Krall) but I think this Sinatra-style version is a superb jumping off point. I never thought much about “movable chords” I play bossa nova and almost all of the chord shapes are movable - since you only play four strings. Anyway, we all appreciate good players like you who are willing to teach!

All chords are movable except first position chords and even, with a slight alteration of fingering, they are movable too. All scales are movable too. That in essence, is the beauty of the guitar.
@thirdlegstalliano Жыл бұрын
Even open position chords are movable. That's why the capo was invented. No need to alter anything. Just clip on a capo and fret the normal way.
@raymonddixon7603 Жыл бұрын
@@thirdlegstalliano When I am playing up the neck I see if any open string can be used. You get some nice voicings. For instance, play the C chord on the fifth fret, E flat. All you have to do is dampen the top E. Play all other strings. There is an open G string there which is ok. Experiment. There hundreds of choices.

Looking forward to learning these chords, especially having a song to apply them to - thanks! BTW, it would be helpful if you defined the small triangle (ex: row 1/column 4) in the chord name. Well done, Allen, thanks!
@josephwong1384 жыл бұрын
The triangle and a 7 indicates a maj7 chord. In this case, a Cmaj7. Elsewhere, there's an Abmaj7, Amaj7 and Fmaj7.
@GeorgeSPAMTindle4 жыл бұрын
It isn't a triangle, it is a V. It is a Roman Numeral, so V = 5, therefore the chord is the 5th chord of the scale. If D is the 5th chord it is in the key of G, which is indicated by the Roman Numeral of I for the G chords. EDIT: The V indicates that the lowest note of the chord is the fifth for that chord, as stated on the chord sheet which appears at 9:55. A is the 5th of all non-diminished D chords. Sorry about getting it wrong before watching the video to the end.

Thank you for this lesson Mr Johnson, it is much appreciated. I have noticed that some people are asking questions of a music theory nature. The video would need to be at least 2 hours long to explain the reason why the chords work in the way they do, so just stop your moaning and appreciate what you are being given for free here. I am sure that Allen Johnson could explain it all to you, but he is probably busy with other things, such as earning a living. The song is full of accidentals, if you understand about accidentals you probably will understand the song, if you don't understand accidentals you won't understand any explanation of the song which doesn't include lengthy lessons about accidentals. If you want to improve your understanding of music theory I would recommend looking at Rick Beato's channel, some of it is hard to get your head round even if you have good music theory knowledge, but he does cover everything right from the basics, so pick videos which are appropriate to your needs. Remember though that unless you do work at getting your head around some of the things that you do not understand you will not improve.
@frack9894 жыл бұрын
First, this is a good video and I appreciate it. However, perhaps people are confused because the nomenclature he is using is confusing. He give the chord tone of the bass note as a Roman Numeral in front of the chord name. This is not standard and it is also wrong for the A7 chord which in the video is "V A7" (see 5:16). So when I was trying to figure out what the roman numerals were used for, it didn't make sense. The A7 should be "I A7". This is corrected in the chord sheet link he provided. Perhaps viewers questions are not accidental... lol
@GeorgeSPAMTindle4 жыл бұрын
@@frack989 The sharp notes are the accidentals, just in case you were being serious, and I suspect that they might actually be hiding a brief key change. I have seen jazz players use notations of 3rd and 5th bass notes, but a lot of other genres just indicate whether it is first, second, third, or fourth, etc. inversion, although there are inconsistencies on the patterns of the inversions, e.g. one writer's second is another ones fourth. The best way to write music down is to do it in a way that you can make sense of.
@frack9894 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgeSPAMTindle I understand what you are saying... however if you look at the chord chart that he included in the links... the Title explains that the Roman Numerals refer the bass note of the chord and the A7 was corrected there.... if you look at the A7 chord on video at 1:54 and 5:16... then A7 on chord chart... you will see that the Roman Numeral is incorrect on video and correct on chord chart... this is not a big deal but it could be confusing... And yes there are brief key changes.... e.g. the first three chords are Key of C (ii V I) the next chord is A7 but in Key of C the A chord would be the 6th chord but minor not major... but actually the A7 is functioning as the V chord as it goes to the i (Dm7)... so it is briefly going to Dm then back to C... as you probably know the A7 is called a 'Secondary Dominant'... and it is a common way to 'jazz' things up
@GeorgeSPAMTindle4 жыл бұрын
@@frack989 I agree that the errors in the video can cause confusion, but if you know what it means you should be able to spot the mistake. If you don't know what it means you won't be able to tell when it is right. A friend has told me that accidentals are used when there is a key change which does not last long enough to clearly identify the key. i.e. when a progression goes to a set of chords which are common to two or more keys. I wish I'd learned that forty years ago, accidentals always caused me headaches!
@frack9894 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgeSPAMTindle yeah, ive been trying to get better at jazz theory... they always change keys... the 'secondary dominant chord' idea is a verrry common way to add a little spice from outside of the key... its pretty simple but once you learn it you will see it everywhere... then it becomes easy to spot... it happens in a lot of rock and pop not just jazz... i'm sure Rick Beato has a video on it... have fun!

Hi again. May I respectfully offer up a slight error or two on your part. At 9:13 you start to speak of the G diminished chord, and then you must have gotten distracted, as you fingered a G# diminished chord. Then you said these diminished chords "move four frets up the keyboard". I'm certain that you know it's three frets. As I said, I suspect something distracted you. (I guess you do keyboard work as well as guitar work, with the word "keyboard" slipping into your talk.) Anyway, I think your presentation of the song was outstanding, and as I said below, your "Sound" is really very pleasant to hear!!!
