Wow... You teach this CHORD structure stuff in such a simple way! I am able to understand this chord tech for the 1st time! You are a legend, and so cool too! Thanks so very much for your totally fascinating and digestible lesson. It's an AHA MOMENT for me. Phew, I was always wondering HOW chords got their names... I only knew the flat 3 made a MINOR CHORD! Others seemed so damned complicated and just plain sorcery to me! I'd guess others agree! YES? SUBSCRIBED!

@@GuitarversumSandraSherman ok, thanks! I'm working on getting my fingers and head around Autumn Leaves... It's fun and tonically exciting. Thanks so very much again, your teaching style and knowledge is unlike any other! I just can't believe how hard and complex music theory is... Bad enough, but so called teachers make it worse than it needs to be! I have wasted so much time and energy with huge effort without meaningful progress! 🙉🙉🙉🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶 You have taken the mystery away from chords by showing how the patterns exist, which means it is now possible to understand the entire fretboard... 😀😀😀

Sandra - Greetings from Florida. Kudos for the outstanding videos you posts. I have always loved Jazz and in high school played my lap steel guitar in our Jazz Band in the middle 1950s. We placed first place in many event with Glen Miller's In the Mood (lead on the steel guitar). After high school, I basically didn't play again until 2011 and since have been relearning the Steel and the Standard Guitar. At age 78 I am still learning. I ordered your "All of Me" and will be working on that, but first I plan to become proficient with all of the chords in this video. Just playing those chords makes some beautiful sounds coming out of my Godin 5th Ave CW Kingpin II Cognac guitar (Thomastik strings). You are tops!

Sandra, I have learned from you more than I thought I could learn from any other instructor. For a long time I have been stretching out my fingers by putting my opposite hand in between them and open them almost to break them. Now I can play anything, I can reach any hard chord easily. And you have become my favorite instructor in this jazz style.
@GuitarversumSandraSherman

Oh, but that sounds cruel on yourself. It's usually not the finger sketch, but the angle of the wrist, why people don't reach far. Great you solved it and are free to play whatever you like now! 👏

Sandra, this is an enriching introduction into the complex subject of Jazz chords. As a beginner, I can follow your explanations very well, how you came up with the chord families, the E string and A string chords, the changes from major to minor and the difference between half diminished and fully diminished chords. This makes sense to me now - for the first time !!! It’s amazing how well you can explain. And your recommendations how to practice these chords are also very helpful, gave me new insights and are now my roadmap for practicing. To have a basis material for practicing, I bought your starter pack chord melody and starter pack II V I and I can highly recommend it to every Jazz beginner. Thanks a lot, Birgit

Oh that's so great to hear, that my system helps you! Make sure to check the Tension Chords video, once you've got the basic 7th chords under your fingers. Then I'd slowly start with chord melody. Enjoy!

This is exactly what I need! Thank you Sandra! (the sideways chord diagrams in the pdf took a little getting used to... I am more used to seeing them with the frets horizontal and strings vertical rather than frets vertical with strings horizontal, but it makes sense your way)

After practicing and thinking and studying and listening to the chords for a full day, I think I can say that this is probably the most significant single guitar lesson I have ever had. Just in one day my chops, theoretical understanding and plain old musicality have improved a lot. Sandra, I am your faithful student from now on! Thank you!

Sandra, thank you! I played guitar a lot when I was young, and loved it. You’re too young to remember the ‘60’s, but I played the usual R&R garage band crap (pardon me, please). I haven’t played at all for 40 years, but decided to pick it up again, and try to learn something more sophisticated. I have always loved and wanted to learn jazz chords, but they seemed difficult and elusive. But they’re not-when you explain them. If you, and KZbin, had existed back then, I could have been playing, and enjoying, elegant chords like Gm7, and Cdim7, 35 years ago. I’m elated that I found you. Keep doing what you do. As you say, “Greetings from Kansas City”.

Mike McGuire Thanks Mike for the compliments (and particularly the "too young" phrase 😄. I'm 46.) Nothing wrong about good ole Rock n Roll. But it's always good to open ones mind for other genres. I'm glad to be of help. Greetings to Dorothy and the wizard back home in Kansas 😊
