(Note: Ceaned up errors due to speech to text) I did the move to USB of my apps, but what I found were problems with various apps which otherwise run flawlessly and smooth when installed on the internal device itself. For instance, Cinema HD simply acts erratic, freezes, then crashes. More often than not, it's not very accessible, particularly when searching. I noticed the same hiccups when using Xplore and other apps. Twice I moved them from USB back to device memory, and vice versa. I also restarted the Firestick after each change. The best performance was with the apps installed on the Firestick itself.

Thanks for the video. When you did this video on your main channel, I commented, but didn’t receive a response. It’s great to move apps to the usb to save space. The problem occurs whenever there is an app update. You have to delete the app and reinstall it, because the update won’t install until you do this. It will say there isn’t enough storage space.

Everything went well until the end when I clicked on "Install", it didn't do anything. Possibly die to an update that happened recently, not sure...the workaround is easy, just use "Open with--->>package installer". Also, having adb enabled when you're delving into MiXplorer sometimes causes the USB to shut down. If that's the case, I just turn off adb, unplug the USB, and plug it back in.

When you do the copy to the Downloader on the original Internal drive how does it know to install it to the USB drive and not the original internal drive?

Since you can't uninstall any of the Amazon default apps installed on the Firestick, I'm assuming that also means you can't use this same method to move any of the default Amazon apps over to USB storage. Only apps NOT pre-installed on the Firestick.

A great video. I have been using X-plore to move the apps from the internal storage to my USB. It is somewhat simpler to use having a two pane window, one for internal storage and the other for the app storage. All can be done on these two panels including deleting of the original app on internal storage, installing app on USB and then deleting APK file afterwards. Only thing is it does not transfer sign in details if you use them on any app so you have to re-enter them once transferred to USB. Keep up the good work.

First of all I want to take the opportunity to thank you for the intuitive information provided in this video, after viewing so many other videos on the subject, I found your information more easily to understand and a less complicated process to follow. Please pardon me, but I am new to this and I must have missed it or something but you did not hear you mention anything about the (external storage “USB”) device. Do I need to (Format it) meaning the USB device with my computer before adding it to my Fire TV Stick 4K, and if so to which format ( like - Fat 32) or do I let the Fire TV Stick 4K Format it? Where does the File manager installs to, to the internal memory of the Fire TV Stick 4K of to the external USB port? What files do I transfer, only downloaded apps or even the Amazon apps? Do Fire TV Stick File System get transferred? Would I be able to download movies and music to the USB device as well to then played through my Fire TV Stick 4K and my computer? Would I be able to transfer apps from my old Fire TV Gen.3 to the new Fire TV Stick 4K instead of going through the downloading process all over again and if so which method is best to use? I tried to add an old 16GB PNY flash drive to my new Insignia Fire TV by plugging it into the USB port and formatting for storage as in your video but when I looked at the Device information it said External Storage was 0 B of 0 B free. I then put it back on the computer and formatted for FAT32 (it may have already been that since the result was so fast) and was able to successfully load some things on it indicating the device was OK. What was wrong on the TV? Do you need to use a new previously unused and unformatted device? Thanks for any help with this.

What if you dont have the 4K MAX? For example, I don't receive a prompt. I do however see the usb drive using a file manager. Is there a way to still get these apps into an external usb drive AS an internal install?

My smaller programs go to downloader and will install on my usb drive but the larger ones will not. Great Flix and Roku Channel simply stay on the internal storage.

You can do this on any FireOS6 and higher device, however on fireOS6 you need ADB to do the initial drive format

Using the new 4kMax, formatted the 64gb usb storage, to external... For some reason on os8, it won't allow me to change the recording directory to usb storage.. On tivimate to record... My cube works flawlessly and old 4kmax works no problem.. Is there something blocking recording storage on the newest 4k Max that you know of? If not could you please do a new video explaining to us how to do it?

This wasn't working for me. I was trying to put the apps on hard drives less than a GB, so I got a nice 64 GB Samsung Bar. Also, if the app doesn't install, use "package installer." Once I did these things, it all worked as it should.

I am following steps, yet it does not put in usb? I go to Internal storage and Downloader, I can see the three files I copied there. I was not able to make this work. When pasting the copied file I either get an immediate "Not Possible" error or it starts to paste the file but the progress bar does not advance and it eventually fails. I made sure I was trying to paste into the Downloader folder.

Hello! I did one test app, not side-loaded. It was the peloton app. The tablo app allowed me to move it to usb storage. However, when I click on the apps, they do not work. The peloton app sits at the logo then goes away. The tablo app won't load at all. Any suggestions? I have more apps I want to move to external drive. By the way, I have an external hard drive. The TV formatted it. I chose the option that can only be used for the TV. I also tried restarting the TV. Also, great video and app. Thank you!

Hi there. I own two firesticks (one FireTV Stick 4K & one FireTV Stick 4K Max), each one of which has a USB (Sandisk Ultra Fit 64GB USB 3.1 Stick) attached on it via OTG. I have downloaded all my apps on the USB drive, but when it comes to update the apps from amazon’s official appstore, I get a message saying that there is not enough space. So, the only solution is move the app back to the internal storage, update it and return it to USB drive. This error happens in both firesticks. Is there any fix?

Okay I love the fire TV stick 4K but I will not upgrade to the max since I am very much annoyed by the stick rebooting every now and then for a couple of times. My daughter has the lite version and she had the same issues. I did a reset, reinstalled everything, but the problem keeps coming back. I also tried all other solutions found on the net (cable, usb socket (I use a 2 amp), cache cleaning, etc. etc.). Adding an OTG cable to expand storage only increases the number of reboots and the original fire stick's lan box also will not work when an OTG cable is connected (before or after the box). Google TV Chromecast is better in this respect.

Having problems with my sd card it has worked since you first put out how to do it. But as of yesterday I cant launch any off the apps that are stored on my sd card. It says cannot be launched because it is installed on a sd card that is not currently connected to your firestick . Have tried un pluging and putting new y adaptor and new sd card holder. Do you have a solution. Don't really want to start over.
