If you use the free transform tool (control + T), you're going to get a frame around your selection every time indeed. The frame itself allows you to resize and rotate your selection. You have to press enter to validate your changes, and pressing escape will cancel them. However, switching tools should save your changes…

EDIT: Immediately upon posting this I found out it's because converting vector layers doesn't properly work in the current version, so it reset because it treated things as though they were not only vector, but text and snapping back into an un-warped state. Yeah, the vector tools are getting a complete remake right now, and it's recommended not to use them until version 3.2

Have you notice the lag in the move tool. If you draw 2 things far from each other and use the move tool it lags really bad, but when they are close they don't lag. The transform tool is slow. It re-renders your art continuously as you move. So you either have to use Ctrl T (free transform) or work at lower zoom levels so the preview engine kicks in. But yes, it's slow and the devs are aware of that.

Gotta activate it first: Select->Show global selection mask. When you have a selection active, a new layer will appear. You can then select it and do whatever you want with it - it will work like any other mask. So you can paint a selection, use all of the transform tools, symmetry and the multibrush with it.

There's no super reliable way to do it precisely right now. If snapping is on for the Image center (Shift S), the center of the selection will snap to it - but it's hard to see as there's no way to visualize it. The option exists for vector layers/objects but not for pixel/group layers yet.

Until there's a python script for it or the feature gets added as part of the core program Krita isn't the most convenient solution for graphic design - you'll want to look into Gimp maybe, or I use affinity designer at the moment for everything that has to do with text and vector.

Another frustrating limitation versus Photoshop. I work using a filled-in paint layer with a transparency mask layer applied to it. I can select my transparency layer, draw a rectangular selection around some detail, select the move tool and then drag. The paint layer will be moved and the transparency layer won't. I want the transparency layer to move only. Any work-arounds?

I can move things but it is only with the mouse. I liked in PS when I could use the arrow on the keypad to carefully and repeatedly tap things into place. I would count the tics as measurement. is there away to do this with krita?

Yes, to do so you need to select the transform tool (shortcut: t) and with that tool you can use the arrows or Shift + arrows to nudge selected layers.

I just downloaded it and none of the options seem to be corresponding and it selects all regardless of selected content on different layers within a group then for a different group it will only let me move one layer at a time, regardless of selection modes i have chosen and even though this other group has the exact same options as the first group. I like this program because of it's brushes and how drawer friendly it was but I think i'll move back to photoshop. Atleast it was consistent!

so i ran into this problem - i was testing out all of the keyboard keys while on krita, just to see if theres something i need...but then i click some sorta key and BOOM theres some sorta symmetrical mirror suff going on the screen, i try to head to the button of symmetry ( not on the keyboard ), which just adds another fuckin symmetry line thingy....i tried then reclicking all the keyboard keys and none of them made the symmetrical thingy dissapear

There are 2 ways to do symmetry: - Toggling the mirror axes in the toolbar (can only click on them) - The multibrush tool (should be Q by default) If the image is duplicated on the screen, that's the wrap-around mode (W key or in the view menu)

Although you can create selection masks, the easiest way to do so is to create a new layer and fill the content of the selection, then hide the layer. Anytime you can right click on it and "select opaque" to get your selection back.

Is it a file layer you're trying to transform? I was having a headache with this as well haha, but I think if you paste the file onto another type of layer (paint, etc) you should be able to transform it.

Yes, Ctrl C or edit -> copy. Ctrl V to paste into a new layer. If you want to copy entire layers, right click on the layer and choose "copy layer" (I think that's how they called the option), then right click on another layer and "paste layer" to insert it. This way you can copy layers from one painting to another.

It's a vector-related function. So yes, it's something you can do in Illustrator. Krita has vector layers where you can do the same, but it's a lot more limited than illustrator for now.

Sorry, but I didn't understand your question. You can cut the content of the selection with Ctrl X and then paste it with Ctrl V. To transform the selection, go to the select menu and ensure that "show global selection mask" is active. A new layer will appear at the top of your stack every time you make a selection. And when you select it, every transform operation you will do will actually transform your selection.
