I’m not sure and I was to lazy to google it but if I’m not mistaken the U300 to U500 are designated implement carriers without the portal axles of the U3000 to U5000 series which are more off-road intended.

This is my dream rig. There was an earthroamer expedition camper identical to this for sale locally about 7 years ago and it was Pennie’s on the dollar, asking $60k it also had the snorkel, front and rear winches and 2 custom side winches middle of vehicle on both sides . The box was a 4 season box as well, composite sandwich panels good from -35 to +125 with ballistic window glass. So awesome! 100% self sufficient off grid home that can do many of the trails in Moab

If you have a need to go off-road, it's hard to beat a Unimog. Too bad that they didn't sell here in the states. That model was designed for the American market. I spent some time at the Daimler proving ground in Germany playing with one of these.

The Unimog 500 is a tractor, that's why it has all the hydraulic conections on the front and the rear. It can be used for agriculture, forrest work, all kind of things. It is not builded for more road work then off-road. There are other Unimog types that converting to RV or expedition truck are much more convinient. More cabin space and building space on the chassis. All the not useble items cost money. The only enthousiasts are the owner and people who know nothing about Unimogs. ( I have an updated Unimog 1300 Turbo ) .

Here's the deal: Thanks to an aggressive lobbying effort by Mercedes-Benz in the 1980s, it is illegal in the U.S. to import a grey market vehicle before it is 25 years old. The only Unimog ever sold new in the states was the U500. So while there may be Unimog Models better suited to an RV conversion, this dude couldn't legally own one unless it were 25 years old. 25 year old farm equipment is rarely in good shape so I think his choice to buy a newer one, even if it has bells and whistles he doesn't need, makes sense.

@@garrettbean9624 It's much cheaper to update a 1300 that's 25 years old or more. Mine is from the German army, it had 22.000 km on the clock and now it hase even free-wheels in the front axel, custom made that saves diesel and hp . I think the chassis is even longer so building more living space is better. I have the " bedroom " above the cabin, so always a bed ready and to stay under 3.5 m the part of the roof go's up electricly there. And because of the tilting cabin, my living cell go's up hydraulicly like a dump truck, pivoting on the back. I have special equipment to prevent that the oil leaves the axel reductions by the airvent, what is a commen problem by all Unimogs the moment a lot of road is donne at road speed. A Unimog is never designed for more road then off it. Portal axels and axel reductions don't like speed. And it's a costly thing to repair it, because the bearing drives directly on the axel. When the bearing is gonne, the axel is wasted . The problem is only in the front axel, because the back has no airvent, The front , there go's the oil in the axel, but can never return. By speed in the reduction, a mist is created and the oil get warm and leaves by that presure. I can check the oil level without unbolting something and only air can go out of the reduction. Unimogs with " fast " axels, give fast problemes. The best thing off-road is a Unimog. That's where it is builded for. My free-wheels are used on the roads and then is nothing turning in the axel reductions. Why they don't make them for Unimogs... I think it's too expensive and not that much people use that truck most on the roads.

Seriously underestimating the weight of the camper section. Says net weight before his modifications is 1400lbs. 85 gal of water is over 700 lbs alone. So add the deck, cupboards, plumbing, battery bank etc add up to a lot more than the 2100lbs he thinks it weighs. Not that it matters as it is way under GVWR.

Some states have weigh scales for truckers and more axles more freight your allowed . If the unimog is overweight he will have to pay a fine .

Cool build, i would love one of these in my farm. But people, you have to realize, this is a practicaly a Mercedes tractor, it is not simple to maintain this beast, and parts are expensive, It has tractor engine and gearbox - and gearbox is a very complex in these. And here in Europe these are used as a tractors to clean snow, mow grass from roadside, sprinkle road with salt and gravel etc etc, you name it. Thats why there are so many gears - so you could be able to do all those jobs, so this is industrial tractor. Be avare of that.

The U-500 is normally a comunal vehicle in Germany and as you can see on this one it still has the cover plate in the front for the comunal mounting plate for snowplows, mowers, weights or basically anything that needs hydraulic or PTO power can be mounted on the front or back.

Sure you can out any tool in from of it, which makes that version super versatile. But it is the most ugly Unimog ever made.A classical 1400 is still the best base you can get.

Yes, especially on 14R20 or 395/85 R20 but take tyre plugging kit and wheel change is very unlikely.

@@the_retag I never said I couldn't, but re-seating tyres on a standard rim is not easy from bitter experience due to a cracked rim. Plugs solve most punctures in situ as long as there is not major carcase damage.
