How far in advance do you think Anand could see that position coming? Does he plan it far in advance, or does it just suddenly become apparent 1 or 2 moves before? As an amateur, I find it astounding how GMs can create beautiful positions like that, after chasing each other all over the board for like 30 moves. It seems like magic.

Like when you see that you can trap your opponents knight or something like that. Anyone can do it, albeit at different levels.

Interesting thing is, we in India have this local version of chess where 4 exceptions are there- 1. No castling 2. King and opponents queen is on E file and similarly for black on D file 3. No two square jumping of pawns on first move (en passant is later addition to patch problems it creates) 4. Promotion based on which piece square originally belongs to (E and D for queen C F for bishop and so on)

Sadistic readers will enjoy this. I tried the mate in 4. I don't have a chess set or program. I have been using MS Paint, where I made a playing field. It uses a board and pieces I drew myself. The board is in the center 1/3 of the window, and dozens of usable pieces (half of them on a dark background and half on a white background) fill the left and right thirds of the window. In order to make a move, I have to use the cursor to make a select box around the piece I want to move. Then I drag the piece to the desired square (if it is the same color). If the piece is moving to a different color square, I have to cut the piece, select one from my field of pieces and drag and drop it on the desired square. I set up the mate in 4 problem in Paint and spent many hours over several days trying to solve this. Finally, I got so frustrated I used my viewing history to find this video again and see if anyone had the solution. Then I noticed something in the video that I didn't remember when I set the problem up on my computer. It's BLACK's move, not WHITE's!! Realizing that, I was able to solve the problem in a couple of minutes without even having to move the pieces! So, anyway, am I correct in assuming that it is impossible for white to mate in four if it's white's move? Yeah, yeah... go ahead and laugh, you sadistic bastards!

A very interesting variation of Chess that has yet to be explored in my opinion where pieces you control can swap position with each other under certain rules, so long as one of the pieces can move to where the other one is under normal piece movement. It makes much sense if we consider medieval diplomacy as the quivalent of this swap or delgation of functions, however to keep in line with this concept we use hierarchy to determine which pieces can delegate onto which, the King, can swap with all, the Queen with all but the King, Rooks with all but the Royal family, clergy and nobles amongst themselves and with peasants and pawns can swap but that is pointless. Also, pawns can only be delegated up to the penultimate rank before promotion. Lastly, delgation counts as a move at all times and is illegal if the king is or will be in check. What do you think Agadmator?
