Kali is the oldest term used in FMA dating back 1600 or even earlier. There were big tribes in Luzong (now Luzon) and particular part in Visayas like Bohol, Cebu, etc. were they have extremely skilled warriors that the kingdoms of Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia (before it was united), and even in Hong Kong & China, would call/hire them for help whenever their kingdom struggles to win a war. They're a killing machines during those times that a small compact unit of 10 could slaughter 40 or more enemy warriors. After Ferdinand Magellan was brutally killed in the war, Spaniards studied and learned about our complex cultures and noticed common weakness: "Gold & Power". That's how Legaspi started his soft approach and with the aid of Vatican Friars. They used gold & power to divide the kingdoms & tribes so that they would kill each other, followed with Christian religion to tone & tame them, and later on turning them into vassals. During the middle part of Spanish rules, Filipinos slowly were taken back to their senses and build up direct & indirect resistance. Because we were deprived of guns supply, our old lethal combat system was revived. The rest was history.

What people have to realize is that in the core of MARTIAL ARTS, there is universality of vectors, energy, conditions that led to techniques cooked by culture. The FMA is a great example that evolved and thrived from their Majapahit Empire (12th-15h Century) that comprised of what is now Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Likewise there are many influences also from the inevitable Chinese Kung Fu (internal and external) due to Chines merchants and the flux of the Taoist monks being expelled from the burning of their monasteries to the neighboring countries...another are the occupiers such as the Spaniards, Dutch, Italians, Portuguese and the British which occupied these islands. The Japanese MA also which evolved from the Shaolin and the Chinese MA have its influences in the FMA... All of the arts are but one but we can see the intricacy, flavor, culture and then some. Just enjoy and have an open mind!

Whether there is a slight difference or not, I think it doesn't matter. What matters is all of these styles work but also have their pros and cons.

Some of it looks like kajukenbo. But all rivers lead to the same outlet. The key here is using your enemies push or weight against them. And Filipino, Kung Fu, Kajukenbo, and Krav Maga utilize the same principle. That is why they all have very powerful and unique fighting techniques. And one fighter in a different martial art may be the more skilled fighter than the other who has trained twice as long. But any and all martial art forms can be a blessing to the individual student no matter how small or complicated it may be. A little knowlege and application go a long way in martial arts. And life itself.
@tyroneemail8 жыл бұрын
+Ricky Reynolds Kajukenbo as with all american arts rely heavily on FMA; they even train with the rattan sticks. Interestingly American boxing as you see it today came from the philipines. around 1895 american boxing was irish boxing; in 1898 the US invaded the philipines. By 1912 many american soldiers were returning from the philipines with a new concept of boxing. By 1920 you begin to see the modern stance for american boxing... It's actually the philipino knife fighting stance.

You could call Keys system Filipino based, same same Okinawan Karate is Chinese based, since that's were it's origins. As far as that goes, an old Guru in S Philippines said, "What we do here is Pencak Silat" but in Philippines we call it Escrima, or Arnis." There are several films missing from this list (Daredevil, and Mummy 2, and more) as far as that goes, as well as many episodes of TV, including "Highlander", This not a bad compendium of film clips, though the editing and quality are slightly off.

It is a strange thing, but as I have been in a number of knife fighting situations, and last year had to face a blade barehanded, after already having been stabbed in the neck from behind in a sneak go by a meth addict, I find these scenes bringing back flashes of the strange and surreal moments as I relised I had been attacked and stabbed in the neck, and had to switch from relaxed summer afternoon to straight killer instinct mode....I blocked a third attempt to stab my neck and promptly disarmed him (,am Eskrimador) and then he produced a sharpened screwdriver. I ended up disarming that, but not until after a third stab wound to my neck. This time I thought that I was gone, and I was just so relaxed and accepting of that. But all three just missed my jugular, and I had him dead to rights. I let him go, even though I had the right to kill him. Watching this brought back the feeling, particularly, of that recent incident. Mi Vida Loca!!

They say that in Jack Reacher the style was Krav Maga.. not Kali.
@kensnow78373 жыл бұрын
I beg to disagree. Most of the moves from Krav maga were borrowed from Kali, Pekiti Tirsia in particular. I remember seeing Israeli operators (Sayeret) learning the style of Kali in discreet Kali training grounds in the Philippines so many years ago. They have adopted the moves and call it their own (Krav Maga). Pathetic, I know for one because I have pictures from my Kali buddy. Kali is a very old form of FMA. Older than the conquest of the Philippines by the Spaniards.

The Thai gentleman in the film had seen him display his skills by taking out a lot of goons before. He could have just shot him for the sake of the job, but it wasn't about the job. They were both trained, martial artists and he would rather give him a fair fight than to let both their potentials go to waste. Tactically, it was a dumb decision, but it was more of an honor thing.

You IDIOT ! do you have any IDEA that the founder of KEYSI was trained by the Grandmaster of KALI and ARNIS or are you just dumb? We asians don’t rely on just weapons but we invented the martial arts and shared this to the western world but don’t forget that in every battle there will be always an actual combat not just on pure bullet. Even here in South Korea we also applied FMA especially the ARNIS and KALI as we integrated it to our TAEKWONDO like my units in South Korean Special Forces and we also teach it to the US American Special Forces who where assigned here in South Korea 🇰🇷 이 IDIOT!

Can we develop a technic where we could use FMA in MMA fights? I mean, not using any lethal weapons? FMA is like for lethal combat and was only thought in the Philippine armed Forces, i know, but perhaps we can help other people to understand that FMA is good as well to neutralize an enemy and not just killing them. LOL!

Why is it that FMA looked just like Kung Fu in defensive form?
@ghosthand3of99 жыл бұрын
+volikoto Probably because all humans share the same anatomy and no one is really doing anything greatly different from the next system. Slight variations in technique and method are going to show. However, everyone has the same basic structure, so attacking it is generally going to look similar. Some systems have a more effective approach.

+volikoto If you mean from how bruce lee performs, bruce lee spent much time as a student to dan inosanto who now carries on bruce lee's school. However, while this is pure speculation, the qing dynasty banned martial arts in china for 300 years; persecuted and executed the masters. This virtually destroyed chinese martial arts. Chinese traded extensively with the indonesians and philipinos. the ancient indonesian art silat is very close to kali but with more aerials and was possibly developed by a woman to combat men. Perhaps the chinese both influenced and were influenced heavily by these art forms. After all the indian art of kaliparyatu is likely the source of all asian martial arts. Kali is pretty similar to kaliparyatu

Ok great material, but "Mission: Impossible III" and"Jack Reacher" don't have pure filipino martial arts, have KEYSI FIGHTING METHOD (from Justo Dieguez former estudent of Joaquin Almeria, both from Spain), wich is a method that combine JKD and KALI (Inosan) mostly and others styles. For that reason some scenes look like Inosanto´ s panatukan mixed with jKD, and the sinawali is filipino but this is not pure filipino martial arts. Notice that except for a couple of movies all this are from Dan Inosanto or from his studens or some students of his students. Maybe you should "From Paris with love" with John Travolta have a mix of Silat, JKD and kali too because Joaquin Almeria, former student of Inosanto and teacher of Justo Dieguez.
