Such a brilliant moment when Samantha asks "Do you mind if I go through your hard drive" and he responds with that long awkward pause before agreeing. Theodore is fearful of what she might find and how he will be perceived. So amazing. It's the Turing test moment. Samantha within a few minutes is already being treated like an actual person by Theodore and he is scared of what Samantha (an AI) might think of him. She passes the Turing test.

@@Tone_Of_Dials Interesting. I never really got lowkey pathetic. Who do you think is one of the most overtly pathetic characters in any film? I'll go first. William H. Macy as Jerry Lundegaard in Fargo. Such a brilliant performance though.
@beauyoung95162 жыл бұрын
@@Tone_Of_Dials You should definitely see the original Fargo. Absolutely classic film. The first season of the newer series is really good as well. The series captures the right energy of the film without trying to be the film. Martin Freeman as Lester Nygard is comparable to William H Macy's as Jerry Lundegaard and both performances are awesome and both characters are equally pathetic.

I've been showing this clip to my adult English students lately to start a discussion about AI. After watching it half a dozen times I just realized the brilliant use of camera angle in this scene: When he first interacts with the default OS we see him with the backdrop of the city, looking outside to the world. In the moment Samantha is being created, the camera switches to Theodor's other side with the backdrop being his apartment, looking into his private side. I love this kind of stuff in filmmaking.
@sacredstarlight94463 жыл бұрын
You know if you stop and analyze the questions the (idk what to call it) the OS startup was asking Theodore it makes sense it gave him someone like Samantha. Based off the questions it asked him it chose someone with a nurturing and loving personality The last question about his mother speaks something personal about him "everyime I tell her something she makes it about herself" meaning he grew up not receiving attention and from that I've often heard the relationship a boy has with his mother will affect him later in life
@rbilleaud2 жыл бұрын
You know, that's an astute observation. You should be a user interface developer. So many times you'll find that you don't like an application because it doesn't take your needs into consideration. As a business analyst I'm always interested in a user's personality. It's one thing to concentrate on what they say they need from a functional perspective, but how you present that is equally important - and often ignored. Why is Facebook so successful while other social media platforms fail? It's the way Facebook presents the information. Ever notice when you post your status, it asks "what's on your mind". Of course, consciously we realize Facebook doesn't really care what's on our minds. But subconsciously there's that connection that, hey, someone is actually interested in what I have to say. It's those subtle details that fulfill our emotional needs that often are the difference between success and failure.

When I first saw this movie I was very very young and I immediately loved the Ai. It felt cool, so high tech and loveable, genius and philosophical etc etc But seeing the film now, as a full grown up, I give this scene a lot more importance than I originally did. The Ai that the system generated for him was a trap all along. He hesitated, they gave him a show stopper. He answered with certainty he wanted a female voice, he got a sexy one. He said his mother always makes it about herself and the Ai is definitely like that, especially in the following lines: "When you asked me my name I thought he's right I do need a name (makes it about her and proceeds to analyse)" "I can understand how the limited perception of a non artificial mind would see it that way.. you'll get used to it" (she first said she's like him and when he said it's a bit weird she instantly made herself sound superior) "Oh good I'm funny" (although she wasn't joking and he says "it is kinda funny") And my personal favourite is when he says he's kept thousands of emails from his previous work in case he wrote something funny and she cuts him off, laughs and says "yeah there are some good ones, I'd say there are 86 we could save and delete the rest". And boom his expression speaks volumes. Out of several thousands the Ai (that had just discovered its own sense of humour) now "liked" 86 and Theodore just said "okay". Why? Because she pushed all the buttons right from the start, played the mother card and now he values her opinion more than he does his own. Pretty clever trick to have your clients hooked up and dependant on the product.

I remember people debating if this was either: A. Real love between a man and a woman where the man didn't even care about her looks. He loved her for her mind and who she is. Or B. A sad depressing tale of a man who was so lonely that he started turning to a manipulative machine for comfort and gives up finding real love with real women in favor of a pretend fantasy. Now that we live in a world where AI girlfriends/boyfriends are a real thing, I think its safe to say the answer is B. Even if Samantha was human this wouldn't be a healthy relationship. She's program to like everything he likes and to be agreeable. Its not that she naturally like these things so much as she just doing it to get him to like her. If she was human that would be considered manipulation and would be a red flags of a toxic person in real life. Theres nothing authentic about her which is made even clearer with the rise of AI partners in real life. Now that its becoming real we see just how unhealthy it really is. No matter how good the programing is an AI isn't going to be like a real person you met in reality and naturally felled in love with. Its a pre packaged product and a pretend fantasy that preys on your loneliness that design to get you hoocked like an alcoholic.

It is my dream to talk to a computer that does my tasks by means of voice command without errors. And I don't even care about all the personality traits. I'm so sick of technologies like Bixby that can't even comprehend the simplest tasks like setting up an appointment. I have to repeat the date so many fucking times, I'm better off doing it myself with my toe.
