That really happened to me. The brake lever on my bike fell between the spokes of the front wheel and jammed it against the fork. It stopped instantly and I flew over the handlebars, hitting myself terribly. I was only going at bicycle speed, about 25 km per hour. A scar on my right ear accompanied me from that moment on. I had to have the bicycle fork straightened. Great episode!!!

Why does the bike flip if I hit the front brake really hard but the pole doesn't get the same effect? I mean, the only thing here is the front wheel stopping...
@redshirt496 ай бұрын
The type of bike used plays a role here. It's very back-heavy and has a very low and aft center of gravity. It was never going to flip from stoppage alone. I can personally attest to the fact that a bicycle that has its front wheel blocked by a wooden stick will flip spectacularly. I have the scars and hospital bills to prove it.

Likely coz bike engines drive the back wheel, so the flipping would be caused by acceleration from the back wheel meeting friction from the stopped front wheel.

One gripe i have with the motorcycle myth is that the bike itself produces no power, so it doesn't add any momentum that could possibly flip it. Granted, i am not saying that it would've had enough energy to make the flip, but i do think that it would've looked a bit different.
@sirduggins2 ай бұрын
I thought you were wrong at first as momentum is just mass and velocity, which is the same for a bike being pulled at 50 vs. driving it, HOWEVER, the motor continuing to exert all its force into an immovable axle could cause the bike to start to lift. Its similar to how an electric screwdriver/drill will spin a screw into a wall, but once that screw is forced to a stop, the drill wants to spin around the bit.
@Games_and_Music2 ай бұрын
@@sirduggins Yeah exactly, there's a difference between a bike rolling at speed and a bike producing that speed, as the rolling bike almost immediately falls over, while a speeding bike probably has more gyroscopic effect (and i think therefore more momentum to keep going). And yeah, using your example, if the motor stopped immediately, there wouldn't be no "tak-tak-tak-tak" coming from the electric screwdriver, because it'd just stop right away. They kinda did the same with the Hellboy car flip punch, although the real life setup might've been a bit too complicated to build, but i do think that flipping a vehicle should be possible if done right. Especially if i remember my own childhood flip when on a bicycle and accidentally pressing the front brakes instead of the rear. Then again, they're rear wheel driven, so maybe they might actually done it right. EDIT: After watching it back, i see that Buster was also tied to the back to keep him from toppling over, which also reduces the chances to flip, as the weight shift might tip the balance (as it probably went when i flipped over with the bicycle). Plus he isn't steering, a human might've held on to try and keep it steady, giving the rear tyre more time to excert force, instead of going flat right away like a limp body (which might end up being saver maybe, but less spectacular).

Yeah, but in that instance you're more likely to do what motorcyclists call a "superman." That's where the bike stops, maybe flips. And the poor rider keeps flying forward like superman. I'll admit I'm rubbish at physics, but I do know a guy of which this happened to. He's fine by the way.
@giannisksanthopoulos43005 ай бұрын

They were using the wrong road surface. It's clearly sandy gravel, as most road surfaces on small roads were back then, compared to that (almost slick runway) asphalt/tarmac they tested on. It should add more friction for that offroad front tire, but with similar result; the MC is to back-heavy and with lower centre of gravity compared to a normal pedal-bike.

Now about the motorcycle-stunt : I don´t understand why the driver does not fly over the handlebar. I once hit an empty soda-can on my bicycle and I went flying over the handlebar. The tyre hit the can from the side exact in the center. That way, the tin got wrapped around the wheel and blocked it solid. So why does it happen with a crank-cycle but not with a motorcycle ? Maybe speed ? Another situation : I lend my Mountainbike to a freind whos was used to cheap supermarket-bikes. He pulled the front-break and went over the handlebar too.

Guys, the myth was about LAUNCHING A MOTORCYCLE SKY HIGH WHILE DOING FLIPS and not if the rider can faceplant over the handlebars under very specific circumstances. A motorcycle will NEVER get launched into the air like in the movie when something is thrown into its front wheel. It's not going to happen. Just stop. You're wrong. Also you cannot even compare this to your childhood memories about faceplanting on a bicycle because the weight distribution is completely different. On a bicycle the person is the heaviest thing which causes the center of mass to be very high up, so it's very easy to fall forwards when breaking. For a motorcycle it's the exact opposite, the heavy frame and engine cause the center of mass to be very low, which gives it much more stability and makes it a lot harder to get the motorcycle to fall forwards.
@gyorgygajdos16578 ай бұрын
But if you pull the bike with a truck it will not work, you must stop the bike at the front wheel to make it flip. The center of gravity is much higher than the wheel and it wants to continue to move forward
@HALLish-jl5mo9 ай бұрын
I think there is a way to get the flip (given a steel rod and an inhumanly good throw). The wire spokes disintegrated when used to stop the wheel from 50 mph. At a higher speed, they would have been completely destroyed, meaning the bike would no longer be held up by the front wheel, and would drive the forks into the ground. If they hit something they could dig into, that would flip the bike. But this would require a massive amount of luck.
@Fernando-ek8jp4 ай бұрын
I mean, if the rider has the proper position and shifts their weight at the last moment, that'd help. Or if it were a more front heavy motorcycle. There are definitely other factors that could be at play here, but I think this shows that, even if it were possible, you need some very weird conditions.

It's a bit strange seeing the bike flip experiment as it did happen to me when i was a kid while cycling I went to get a clipboard and the polythene bag in which i was carrying the board was a bit to long and I was practicing to cycle all the way home without using my hands... I made it almost all the way, when I got close to my house i passed a pothole and i managed to balance the cycle but the board swung too hard and got stuck in the front wheel and I flipped over and the cycle came at me from flipping and hammering me down to the ground by the seat... I don't know maybe the handle turned as I wasn't using my hands or maybe the cycle's weight is way less than a bike because of the engine being in the mid... But yeah I did flip and got bruised on the shoulder unlike buster who sustained injuries on legs. I was really expecting it to flip as I had experienced it... Maybe you guys can try it with a cycle once again I'd really like to see it.
@zain-ul-abideen35897 ай бұрын
Plus we see many bike stunts pulling a stoppy as they call it when they apply the front brakes to lift the rear end, so isn't it already possible to convert the forward momentum to vertical?
@Fernando-ek8jp4 ай бұрын
A bicycle has way different weight and weight distributions than a motorbike, for one. For another, the tricks you're referring to also require the rider to shift their weight. That being said, the momentum doesn't really shift upwards, it turns into rotation around the front wheel. If you wanted to take off while on the front wheel you'd have to push down and jump, or have other factors at play. I'm certain it's possible to find a motorcycle with the appropriate configuration to do that, but it'd have to be quite the freak accident.

@matildastanford70196 ай бұрын
ln the movie it was a bike with sidecar which would've instantly solved the stability issue. Add to that the naz1 was leaning forward slightly which also may have aided handlebar flip. l think the myth is plausible with a circumstantial caveat.
@mrheisenberg836 ай бұрын
The bike flip is real. I have experienced a small version of this myself when I got a fishing pole stuck in the front spokes of my bicycle and totally flipped frontwards and landed on my face. That's how I learned to not transport hard objects in a bag hanging from my handle. ;) I can only assume that with greater speeds (and maybe a motor, unlike the motorbike in this episode) the flip would be a lot faster and maybe even a little airborne. Their test here was insufficient imho. If you use real spokes and not steel most of them would break, the fork would go down, touch the ground and the bike should flip forwards at nearly full speed (provided the pole does not break before enough spokes are gone). The need for repeating everything with one wheel kinda screwed over the whole test imo.
