Paul is not the hero of Dune. He isn't the villain but he isn't the hero. At 40:50 your boy on the 2nd to the right was close to getting it but not quite. our boy on the right got it at 42:15 The horror he sees is the war he's about to unleash. At this point even if he told the fremen to stop they wouldn't, once he started pretending to be the messiah (because remember the prophecy was made up by the bene gesserit) the war was inevitable. The war is going to result in the death of billions of people and will Paul even be a better ruler than the last emperor? The power of Dune is that it makes you think you're rooting for space jesus the whole time then at the end it pulls the rug out from you and you realize you've been rooting for space hitler the entire time. Watch it again, and watch it with that message in mind.

In the book chani is actually a ride or die for Paul but they changed it for the movie to show what Paul is doing is wrong through chani because people when reading the book would praise paul which is something the author didn’t like which is why the director took a different approach to it, chani told paul “you will never loose me as long as you stay you” which is the reason why she left because Paul said himself he didn’t believe in the prophecy and she knows the stuff he’s doing isn’t because he believes it but because her people believes it so it’s like he’s using her people and their faith and marrying princess irulan for power

I really hope that in Dune Messiah they show more of the holy war and how much carnage the Fremen dealt to the galaxy. In the book there's a signficant time jump where the war already happened and Paul is left dealing with the aftermath.

In the book, many fights are off-screen. Unsurprisingly, the Jihad is thus skipped. This is not the important part (to him). For movies, I feel we will get more, but I'd be disappointed if that's a focus at all. We should see how the galaxy is affected. How the status quo changes. The suffering. But not "the war" itself.

It's amazing how few people seem to understand that Paul's acceptance and rise as the Lisan al-Gaib is not supposed to be celebrated or rooted for. The Bene Gesserit installed this false prophet in the Fremen thousands of years ago so they could, in the future, use it to control them. The Fremen are willingly handing over their own freedom to become holy warriors for a Bene Gesserit pawn that then got out of control and started a holy war.

I feel like "liking" or "disliking" misses the point, just as much as cheering for him does (besides I think many just cheer to that because of how cool the scene is, rather than just Paul) I think while Herbert obviously has his message, it's also more complicated than that because in terms of the plot Paul is kind of forced by a whole cascade of events into what he does, and a lot of it is understandable, he doesn't want to be controlled by the Bene Gesserit, he can't submit to the Emperor, the great houses threaten him, he essentially has his big speech because he doesn't want to kill stilgar, which is a theme that really becomes important in Messiah, that he has to find a way to protect his people, specifically Chani, without making things worse. At the end Paul is a doomed character, who kicked off a massive catastrophe by originally doing what was right, and trapped by the future
@tiernanrea1726
@tiernanrea1726 Ай бұрын
@tacitus5665 fair post. It's definitely clear that Paul despite his prescience, is at the mercy of external factors beyond his control.. he spends the entirety of Dune attempting to forge a path which avoids the Jihad, yet it only becomes a inevitability. Its defintely reinforced in Messiah and Children.. I can't remember the exact line, but Paul suggests that even if he were to martyr himself, the Jihad would continue with his ghost being used as the justification. The entire religious machinery of government which rises around him and continues at the behest of Alia, post his departure to the desert. Although, I guess the argument can made that the Jihad was necessary in that it uprooted the status quo and eventually led to the reveal of the Golden Path.
@tacitus5665
@tacitus5665 Ай бұрын
@@tiernanrea1726 the Golden Path wasn't revealed by the Jihad, it's simultaneously what makes the golden path necessary, but is at the same time part of it, I think Leto says it later that precisely what Paul specifically did would take thousands of years to undo, alongside the machinations of the Bene Gesserit, and other institutions, that had accumulated too much power
@tiernanrea1726
@tiernanrea1726 Ай бұрын
@tacitus5665 sure, I'm not suggesting it was directly revealed by the Jihad.. but if Paul died on Arrakis and he never ascended to emperor (the Jihad was a inevitability with his ascension), Leto II would have never been born, and subsequently the Golden Path wouldn't have been revealed.

Y'all might agree, but as soon as Paul drank the Water of Life, homie became like Eren Yeager. Cool as fuck but scary as hell too

Acting wise. Timothee clears Tom Holland. His performance here is better than anything Holland has done

That's actually a fantastic comparison, both leaders of an isolated, oppressed people cursed with foresight and having to thread a "golden path" filled with atrocities in the hopes for a better future.

How is the rest of the series going to he interesting if it’s just Paul dominating? 0 adversity 0 real threats. Thats how I felt for the 2nd half of this movie. It was just a Paul victory lap.

I would have preferred if it ended with the shot in space or on Paul rather than chane it was strange and made you think there was more to the shot but there wasn't. Still a 10/10 film for me and one of my favorite blockbusters in years great follow up to the first which I also loved

If there’s ever options for shows with foreign languages. Well, keep the subtitles on, but turn the English Dub on. I don’t think the dude on the far left can read too good.
