The character of Chani in this film is significantly different from Chani in the book. Denis changed her role to make her the “voice of reason” in the film. A small way to try and get the authors original intent across. Book Chani is more of a background character (in the first book) and is fully onboard with Paul and his rise to power. When Paul announces his marriage to Irulan, it’s openly said that the marriage is for political purposes only and that Paul will not show Irulan any affection. He has to marry Irulan to legitimize his claim to the throne. Paul is fully committed to Chani and she and his mother, Jessica, are all aware of the political nature of their marriage.

INTERESTINGG!!! Thanks for this book info. Whenever i see a marriage even political, i always think of an heir (probably from so much game of thrones) - and tbh it would personally hurt me if I was in love with someone and they had to marry someone else- even if it’s strictly political because I’m sensitive 😂

Chani understands in the movie too but it completely took her by surprise and completely demolished and crushed her heart. I like this way much better. It's so beautiful yet depressive, it's so incredibly emotional and powerful. Those looks Paul gave her and then when he turned around to look at her again while the music played and you could feel what was coming Absolutely incredible.

39:40 Paul has vision all throughout part one and two, he sees the future is terrible. The "narrow" way through all of their enemies is the choice he made in the end. He tells his mother that "she will come to understand" and this is what he means by that. By marrying the daughter of the emperor he can give the Fremen a better future, the green paradise and save them with a flick of his hand. That's why he proclaims his love for Chani before the end, to soften the blow and to make her understand that this marriage is just the only way for them to survive. He chose the greater good, rather than love, meaning: he is doing the opposite of what his father would have done and survive because of it.

@@_MicZ_ the holy war would have happened anyway. Irulan's conversation with the emperor explains that. if he died-following any other timeline- the holy war would have broken out because he would be a martyr. Paul chose the narrow path of their survival, if u believe he saw the golden path that means the survival of humans as a whole. judging him from the point of view of the billions that die in the war as a villain is a superficial mindset.

Oddly "Dune 2000" (on the SyFy channel and elsewhere) is closer to the characterizations and scenes as presented in the books but Denis Villeneuve's presentation is closer to the themes of each chapter and the books overall keeping in mind the first novel itself is really two books. While Denis gets some flak for changes to Chani it is because Frank Herbert was extremely critical of reader interpretation to the story AND their misunderstanding of Paul as a "pure hero. Ironic given a core theme of Dune is false messiahs. This is part of why Dune Messiah was written as it was and why God Emperor of Dune at times reads as heavy handed repetition even as both books explore various themes and the consequences of Paul's decisions. So as a someone with a deep appreciation for Herbert's work and statements on the response to his first book in the series, combined with the influence of Harrison's Dune, Denis expanded the roles of certain character, notably Chani and Irulan, to make it more blatant for the viewer who may not be familiar with the series AND not inclined to read the books. If Denis continues as is, there could be 5 more movies as a solid foundation has been set. That said, if he is only able to do Messiah and Children, that should be good too.

If you can get past the costumes and the TV budget its FANTASTIC (acting and writing is top notch imo) and you get to see (it was to me anyways) the first appearance of a VERY young James McAvoy (Xmen, Split, Wanted) who plays another VERY important character ;) You should be able to find the entire thing on KZbin :)

@@NythicalReacts For what it's worth, in the books Paul tells Chani that Irulan will have no child of his, and that Chani will bear his only children, and also that Irulan would have not a single moment of kindness or tenderness from him, not even a single touch of the hand, which he does stay true to. By the next book its been twelve years and Irulan is absolutely seething that Paul has never even smiled at her basically lol. It is a purely political marriage, and Chani is much less opposed in the book as she knows that she has Paul's heart.

Watch the tv version ending, of this ( you can find it on KZbin.) It ends as the book ends. I like how the TV series ends. Perhaps those watching this compare the two will prefer it as well. No denying the art of Denis though. He's a powerful film maker and captures the books intent at the end of how the Fremen move forward from here. Personally I think that someday this will be made again, perhaps in another 40 years. If so, maybe they will expand it, and include more of the book. If the studio would've been braver the first book has enough excellent material for three movies. However, the material needs a par excellent movie maker, and story teller with all the power elements you can bring to bear to make it what fans would like it to be.

By making Jessica, Chani and Stilgar mediums through which the movies conflicting ideas are expressed Villenueve has stripped them of the humanity and connection to Paul as a person and gives the impression that the Fremen are innocent, that jessica is heartless, and that Chani and Stilgar are simply two sides of Fremen culture that never were present in the novel. All Fremen were extremists - including Chani - and she wasnt as naive in the Book. They also practiced polygamy, and Chani was definitely understanding of him needing to officially marry Irulan. Paul didn't change, and power did not corrupt him, but he did make the necessary hard choice to steer the wrath of the Fremen to save his loved ones and the Fremen themselves. His choices were a Jihad that kills 60 Billion+ or the rapid implosion of civilization and the extinction of humanity.

I'm not sure how growing up in the deserts of Arrakis would make her knowledgeable on the politics of imperial marriages, but I thought using her as the vehicle of some major thematic points of Dune was smart for a film medium.
