I'm glad Lyrith is finding the joy in Moore's run! He and Brosnan are the Bonds who have the most fun with the role to me. Moonraker is a wild ride, and makes a great middle entry for Moore. Good humor, a memorable henchman, and a big finish. This is the level of Bond I really enjoy - where the plot is wild, the action is big, and the villain is crazy.

I love Moonraker!! It’s such an epic, entertaining, crowd pleaser. I grew up loving it, then finding it cheesy, and now appreciating it for how much they crammed into the movie. Big budget, exotic locations, big action sequences, hot chicks, memorable villains and gadgets. Dare I say, that Moonraker has become the quintessential template for a “modern” Bond film?! 👍🏼

@@jonathanfurzeland4740 Thanks!! Yeah it’s great & definitely grows on you. My favorite parts are: 1) Trippy intro transition when Jaws falls through the circus tent. 2) Dramatic, dark murder of the woman in the fox hunting scene. 3) G-force machine (one of the few times I legit worried about Bond!) 4) Jaws revealing himself in the alleyway during Rio, and 5) The amazing cable car fight sequence. Hands down, Jaws is my favorite “evil” henchmen in the Bond films. Absolutely a menacing monster, but also complex & sympathetic. True beauty & the beast by the end. Wish we had more of him.

Yes the space shuttle had wings but they was only used for simpel gliding manoeuvres during landing and not able to fly by it self in the atmosphere so for transport they use the Boeing 747.

@@ThomasVanhala Space Shuttle in Atmosphere? Let's say it with a quote from 'How to land a Space Shuttle... From Space': "It has stubby wings and a fat round nose. It's affectionately referred to as a flying brick." Plus it has no internal tanks, so some little plot hole for those interested in film mistakes made. Without that fat orange tank between the bossters this thing descends with 10,000 ft per minute. A glide ratio of "just forget it!" Throw a parachute jumper - no wingsuit allowed, really just the tight fitting suit, oh, and give him some oxygen for 5 minutes please, he'll need it! - out of an aircraft at cruise speed of Mach 0.7 at 37,000 ft altitude, he may open his parachute for the final landing stage, so something around 200 ft above the ground, look where he lands in relation to where you threw him off, that's how far - round about - a shuttle would come. I can tell you it is not very far. Something around the 75 nautical miles. In best case, straignt in, no turns allowed whatsoever to get all out of it. And hope for some tail wind.

The Jaws storyline could have been reworked (although when Bond points out that he would not be up to Drax's spec in the Brave New World, that is well made). Get rid of the silly gondola. Shuttle on top of a Boeing 747. "That's not possible." On the contrary, that was how it was carried around. This movie came out in 1979, two years before the shuttle actually was launched into space, but we saw many tests where they were dropped from a 747 like this. After they were retired in 2011, they were carried triumphantly over several American cities before they were delivered to museums. The shuttle launches looked very realistic, especially considering that it hadn't happened yet in real life. I think NASA cooperated with getting it right because they liked the advertising. But there's of course no way to fire the rockets from the top of the airplane without the fuel tank.

I really admire DBF’s passion for the Bond movies. Having Lyrith co watch them with you & comment on them is the best thing you could have done. I am really fond of Moonraker for how epic it is, although it is quite unrealistic and exaggerated in many areas. The Spy who Loved Me is one of my top three of the series, but I just don’t think Lewis Gilbert was a particularly talented director. He just couldn’t do any grounded Bond’s where he had to carry out genuine detective work and investigating.

Moonraker! The first thing that stands out is the similitude with the last Bond! Strongberg wanted to create a new world under the sea and Drax wants to create a new world in space! Well, more or less! Plus, of course, Jaws is back! The magnificent parachute, or should I say the Roger Moore non parachute stunt in pre-title scene was in fact performed B.J. Worth and his team! And from here on in, we’ll be seeing a lot of him in various James Bond movies! The movie has absolutely nothing to do with the book! At the time it was shot, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek and other space movies had come out and it was the big craze of the moment! It was also the launch of the first NASA space shuttle which is seen in the pre-tile sequence! Cubby Broccoli, who was on location with the team in Brazil, was interviewed and asked if he was into science fiction and he answered, “we’re not into science fiction we’re into science fact”! And that’s why they had to have a big Bond budget going out into space! However, the next Bond comes back to earth! The scene of Drax’s mansion, although it takes place in California, it was in fact shot in France in two different châteaux! For the exteriors, the Château de Vaux-Le-Vicomte South East of Paris! And for the interiors, they were shot in another French palace called Château de Guermantes East of Paris near Euro Dysneyland! The centrifuge experience reminds me a little of Thunderball when Bond (Connery) is on the rack in Shrublands! When Bond’s gondola comes out of of the water onto St. Marks’ square and everyone reacts including the pigeon and the dog, notice the man with the bottle? He was the same man on the beach in the previous Bond when the Lotus Esprit emerges from the sea! But I think I already mentioned it! In the glass factory, the keypad code of Close Encounters of Third Kind is a bit over the top for me! Like another Easter Egg when Bond meet Draco in Majesty’s Secret Service where there’s a guy cleaning the warehouse and whistling Goldfinger at the same time! When Jaws goes down in the cable car in Rio and comes out of it in one piece and meets Dolly for the first time, it’s been said that when she smiles she appears to be wearing braces on her teeth but that is untrue! This information would stem from a Mandela effect! What I find interesting is that wherever Bond goes in the world, at least in the last three movies, there’s always an MI6 base somewhere where we see M, Moneypenny and Q, that’s kind of cool! What’s also cool is all the beautiful girls in Drax’s company but that’s normal as we discover his master plan! Now, about the final battle! In Bond films, there’s always a final battle, well, generally! In Goldfinger, it was at Fort Knox! In Thunderball, it was under water! In You Only Live Twice, it was in the volcano! In Majesty’s Secret Service it was in the Piz Gloria! In Live And Let Die, it was in voodoo land, small but nice! In The Spy Who Loved Me, before the very end, it was in the giant tanker! Here, we’ve actually hit the jackpot and mainly thanks to Star Wars etc. The final battle takes place in space and what a battle! Incidentally, in space there is no sound! It’s a vacuum and therefore No atmosphere to carry it! The Producers thought that for the next Bond film, it might be a nice idea to come back to earth and come back to the original spirit of Bond the way Fleming would have wanted it! And that’s what will happen! However, coming back to the end of Moonraker when Bond is firing the lasers on the orchid spheres and he’s concentrating with a close-up view of his face, don’t you get the impression that in his mind he could be hearing the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi saying to him “use the force”? I hate to say it but that last sequence really spoils it for me! But then that’s just my opinion! Still, it ends well! Instead of Bond being in a boat with the girl, he’s in a space craft with the girl! It changes things a bit! Until the next Bond! And see how that one ends!

This was such a big hit back in 1979 that it wasn't beaten until Goldeneye in 1995. I'm fine now with the science fiction (not fact) of it and most of the goofiness. How they depict Jaws and the Bondola scene still bother me. This should have been Roger's last one: it was fitting for the 70s Moore Bonds. Dalton should have taken over and ushered in (earlier) the grittier 80s films. Looking forward to next video.

I went to see this on opening night with my best friend Jim. By the time Jaws fell into the circus tent, I'd already given up. When we got out to the parking lot after the movie, we were ALREADY talking about something else. As it happens, the Tom Baker "DOCTOR WHO" episodes had just gotten to Philly the week before, and we went back to my house and watched "Robot, Part Two". I'd been a fan of the show for some years already, that was Jim's 1st exposure, he became a fan immediately. Sadly, I rank "MOONRAKER" at the BOTTOM. Though it had the same writer & director as "SPY" (but this time, no Richard Maibaum to rein in Christopher Wood), and an even bigger budget, it suffered from several things. It was too silly... the action scenes were too slow and boring... and, strangely, the set pieces were so loosely-connected, I had trouble following the plot as it went from point A to point Z. On that score, this is similar to Disney's Jules Verne adaptation, "IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS". (Check that one out. I saw that in theatres twice-- 20 years apart! Even grown-up, I still had trouble following the plot.) Hard to believe this came out the same month as "ALIEN", and not long after the "BUCK ROGERS" pilot movie. The shots of those killer satellites being set loose to wipe out all life on Earth were similar to those in 'STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE" just 6 months later. I thought Lois Chiles was one of the prettiest Bond girls EVER. But she seemed too cold and reserved. (And, sadly, she didn't age well.) The year before, she was the murder victim in "DEATH ON THE NILE", long one of my TOP favorite Agatha Christie / Hercule Poirot films. (Check THAT one out!!!) I read the novel "Moonraker" in the early 70s and it remains a favorite of mine. So this movie was devastatingly disappointing. The girl in the book was "Gala Brand", a smart, tough "special branch" undercover policewoman, who kept Bond at a distance the whole story. At the end, he decided to finally ask her out... only to find why she kept pushing him off. SHE WAS ENGAGED. Looking back, I feel had the film been made in the 50s, the perfect actress to play her would have been Honor Blackman, who of course was "Cathy Gale" on seasons 2 & 3 of "THE AVENGERS". In the novel, Sir Hugo Drax was a British industrialist who'd become successful and popular with his plans for a home-grown space program. He was building a space rocket, "The Moonraker", to orbit the Earth. What nobody knew was... he was really an ESCAPED Nazi war criminal who'd changed his name, and was planning to launch a nuclear warhead to LEVEL London and finish the job Hitler started. This plot element turned up-- somewhat-- in the film "DIE ANOTHER DAY". My choice for actor, had this been done in the 50s, is Howard Marion Crawford, who played Watson in the 1954 SHERLOCK HOLMES tv series. When Freddie Gray says bitterly, "This man's a member of my club!" it's a reverse of the book. Drax first comes to M's attention because he ran across Drax at his club, where he saw him doing the unthinkable... CHEATING AT CARDS. This is why M sicced Bond on Drax!!! This plot point was later repeated in the novel "Goldfinger", only, it was cheating at both cards and golf. When Bond beats Drax at his own cheating, Drax writes out a check and says... "Spend the money... QUICKLY." This turned up in "OCTOPUSSY". The climax, where Drax is escaping by submarine, Bond changes the course of the missile, bringing it down right on top of Drax. THIS... was used in "THE SPY WHO LOVED ME"... so they couldn't use it in the movie "MOONRAKER". I keep hoping, but have pretty much given up hope anyone will EVER do authentic period adaptations of the novels. I like most of them BETTER than the movies. At least they were done faithfully in the newspaper comics, and there is a BRAND-new series of graphic novels being done right now adapting them, starting with "Casino Royale". Speaking of "THUNDERBIRDS"... the shuttle launches are considered some of the best-ever work of Derek Meddings. Due to delays, the film came out BEFORE the 1st real-life NASA shuttle launched! When I saw photos of the real thing... it looked EXACTLY like Medding's model-work. The space station design made ZERO sense to me. While they had artificial gravity on both "LOST IN SPACE" and "STAR TREK", that had nothing to do with the structure ROTATING, as in "2001" or here. I don't know whose idea it was to have Drax's station rotate to generate gravity, but they needed to be SLAPPED. Lyrith's a real sweetie! All the best to both of you.

OH yes... there's a similar-- yet FAR-SUPERIOR-- cable-car battle in "WHERE EAGLES DARE" with Richard Burton. You really should do a review of that one!! Lyrith does an incredible job of predicting the scenes of the movie, however she was quite wrong about the opening. Space shuttles really were transported on the tops of jumbo jets. Did either of you get the two musical references to sci-fi movies by the way (The hunting horn playing notes from 2001 and the keypad from Close Encounters)? The bit I thought the script writers should have picked up on is the Samurai henchman should have had a Japanese name, but they called him Chow, which is Chinese.

Is there anyone reading these comments on KZbin because this movie was very expensive to make back in 1979 because I really like the scene back in Brazil when agent 007 was driving his car and there was another beautiful car with a nice looking young lady following him, then taking pictures and then I remembered the part when he was at the hotel, and seeing that same woman and started having a conversation with her and then I remembered the scene when he was about to run up in today, he took off the ribbon, which was around the waist of the dress that that woman once wore back in 1979.

It does seem odd that Drax would have a python in his South American lair because he could easily get a boa constrictor or anaconda, which are native to the region.

In English there is a phrasal verb "to give [...]" like Jeroen says above. If that experience is pleasurable you say it is "Goodhead".

Lyrith, Lyrith, sit down. Listen to me very carefully. You seem like a nice girl and I have enjoyed watching you and Jeroen react to these Bond films, but I must tell you directly that I am shocked, absolutely SHOCKED, that you would give Moonraker so many stars. You and I have been almost 100% the same on the rankings for all the Bond movies so far, but on this one I just can't understand what happened. 3.5 stars!?!? That is 3 stars too many. Now listen, when it comes to ranking For Your Eyes Only (my personal favorite Moore movie) you had better rank it MUCH higher than Moonraker. Because if you do not, I tell you right now, I will personally call that villain hotline that Drax used in this movie and I will hire Jaws myself to come after Jeroen. How long do you think Jeroen will last then, huh? Don't make me do that, Lyrith! Obviously, I am just messing around. 🤣Love the channel. Love the reactions. I am very surprised by the generous amount of stars this time, but hey, to each their own. Jeroen, when can we expect another Mission: Impossible reaction? Those are pretty cool, too.
