Only a few reactors catch "Leon The Professional" as one of the movie references on 'What Is Love?' 😂🥰 It is kinda unique for the MV's director to include Leon and 'Pulp Fiction' as movie references for teens to discover what LOVE is, but.... that is one of the reasons why a TWICE MV caught my attention the time this was released. Never regretted diving into that rabbit hole ever since 😂😂

The director or scriptwriter must be around my age, in their 40s-50s, they must have grown up with these movies, because most references are from the 90s, early 2000s (apart from the older "The Party/La Boum", and the more recent "La La Land"). The only ones I didn't recognize were "La Boum" and the Korean movie.

Early Twice music was very bubbly and cute. As they’ve matured so has their music and seeing their evolution has been so great.

Congratulations, you've caught so many movies :)) Sometimes people don't notice the movie references. It's not a big problem, but when you notice the references, watching the MV becomes even more enjoyable. This part of Twice's discography is not my favorite, but I think this MV is an iconic MV..

The movies in "What is Love?" are: - "The princess diaries" (2001, Nayeon) - "Ghost" (1990, Sana and Jeongyeon, she often played male parts then because of her short haircut) - "La boum - The Party" (1980, Mina and Dahyun, French youth romance film) - "Pulp Fiction" (1994, Sana and Tzuyu) - "Romeo + Juliet" (1996, Tzuyu and Jeongyeon, movie version with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes) - "Love Letter" (1995, Jihyo and Jeongyeon, Japanese love drama) - "La La Land" (2016, Momo and Tzuyu) - "La boum" (Mina and Dahyun) - I couldn't find anything that references any movie in the choregraphy scenes. I think they are just generic. - Dahyun's rap: "Ad break" on TV. Advertisements for "Twice TV" (exists) and Acuvue contact lenses (real product placement). - Chaeyoung's rap: Scene from "Léon: The Professional" (1994) by Luc Besson with Jean Reno, Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman. "Léon" is kind of a cult film in South Korea, lots of idols are dressing up as Natalie Portman's or Jean Reno's character. - "The princess diaries" (Nayeon) - "Love Letter" (Jihyo) - "The princess diaries" (Nayeon) - Last new scene (in the dance break at the end): Dahyun as Léon The Professional with his iconic sunglasses from the movie and a beard shadow as seen in the film. Hope that helps a little (a lot of the movies are quite old now).

I’ve been living in Korea for a number of years now so I have a little bit of understanding as to how Koreans absorb media that originated outside this country. Movies like Pulp Fiction, Leon, and so forth aren’t associated with a year, decade, or era, as they are in Western culture. They become iconic in Korea without having any connection or context with respect to their original production and creation dates, or even to the main idea of a movie’s story. Certain scenes or images become iconic here without any real rhyme or reason compared to our understanding (which is usually tied to when a particular film was popular).

Will have to recommend "cry for me" by Twice. It wasn't originally released with an album so people might skip over it going by albums alone.
