Then, when we started to keep english titles, we sometimes changed them to keep the "exotic" (as in to separate them from french cinema) vibes but to make them easier to understald. For example, few people know what hangover means, so it doesn't resonate with us. But very bad trip is a simple title that encapsulates the movie and is also a play with the "bad trip" expression we use to talk about doing drugs. Now, it's mostly a case by case thing. We keep most original marvel movies titles but we translate star wars movies

Cheeza may has a point here, and I think maybe the maketing thought that the title would sound less weird that way cause the only occurence of the word baby used in french I can think of are "that way": babyphone, babysitting, the expression "baby-boom" so yeah "Boss Baby" sound just a little bit weird in my ears. @@Soken50 In Hebrew it's just 4 words ("On the way" - "Baderech", "to the wedding" - "Laxatuna" (x pronounced like the Russian sound, not like "ks" of English), "we stop" - "Otsrim", "at Vegas" - "Bevegas") . Usually Hebrew is shorter than English, everywhere. What I think was clever but also not future proof is "Alien", which became "The 8th passenger" (because the alien was the 8th in the ship). "Alien" is just too generic, but "The 8th passenger" can't work well with the next movies of it (weird to have 2 numbers, and also it's not the 8th one anymore) ...

In English, it's just "Alien". In German, it's "Alien - Das unheimliche Wesen aus einer fremden Welt" (Alien, the scary creature from a foreign world). But that was in the late 70s, and media companies didn't think their audience would understand without such hints.

That's part of the reason, but the true reason is that we don't know english that well. We walt to keep english titles because it wouldn't sound quite as good in french or to separate it from french movies. But we keep it to simple more impactful titles because english isn't our native language so we'd forget anything too complicated. For example, hangover means nothing to most french people so we changed it to very bad trip which is easier to remember. And that's the reason we add sex into many movie titles, we go to the point to make people remember

Honestly tho, movie title translations were wild in the 2010s in korea. One example, they translated dispicalble me to super bad. Not even in Korean, just a pronunciation of 'super bad', but just written in korean. I went on for years thinking that was the actual title of the movie, until I went to a middle school in America and said my favorite movie was super bad. What I didn't know is that there was a movie called super bad... which was rated r. It took 3 detentions and a counsling with the principal and my parents to figure out that I was talking about an innocent animated movie and not something that a child should not have seen. Thank you, south korean movie title translators! I was bullied for the rest of my middle school years because I was labeled 'the weird kid'.
