100 pursuits over a 2 year period, and not a single one was caught. This was the reality of a single police agency who was plagued by skilled drivers using Subaru’s unassuming but razor sharp tool known as the World Rally Experimental or WRX.

@@NerdTouchingGrass Well, different roads in different places. The Hellcat excels on wide American expressways, while the WRX will always conquer on twisty tight mountain roads. Ultimately it's like comparing a surgical scalpel to an axe, you wouldn't chop wood with a scalpel and you aren't going to do surgery with an axe. Personal preference from there, personally I've always preferred the WRX but they are different cars for different environments.

@@NerdTouchingGrassnope. Keiichi Tsuchiya took the hellcat on the gunsai touge and had no problems. They actually handle as well as an m5 or rs7. The only problem is that people still believe the eastern lie of american cars not being able to handle. The next time Daigo drifts a hellcat or camaro all the jdm dik riders will claim they "always liked american cars". Only the real car guys know the real ones from fake ones.

It's insane how people blame a CAR for people doing armed robbers and being reckless, its an inanimate object, its not the car's idea to go out and commit crimes, its the person behind the wheel. Governments think that by just banning everything they don't like it will solve the issues, it wont.

Prior to the Subie era, in the early to mid-80's in Sydney, there was a joyrider known as the "Porsche Kid". He only stole 911's and used them to bait cops into chases. I was passed by him one night driving near, I think, Five Dock. He went flying by. Twenty seconds later, a gazillion cop cars came past, tyres protesting, lights and sirens ablaze. Don't know if they ever caught him, but he was a thing for a short while back then.

Aussie cops actually figured out that wrx front radiators were a ridiculously weak point after they field tested them to possibly use them as highway patrol chasers. Due to the big wide open front bumper grills for big airflow meant a little front end hit usually meant the radiator would crack, the engine would over heat within minutes and the chase was over.

(Quite rare in Aust for cops to draw guns). After some questioning while cuffed and a few phone calls. They apologised. Their reason was theat they saw the car going so slow with hazards flashing and thought it was stolen and the shitty factory immobiliser was trying to do its thing.

Real talk, my mate was one of the guys that were doing ATMs and Smash N Grabs with these WRXs here in the inner city of Sydney. He ended up being shot by the police in a stolen WRX after doing a Ram Raid. The officer was charged with 4 charges, but wasn't convicted, if I remember correctly. The entire reason why NSW police bought the WRX police car was because of his crew. It was a great time growing up in Sydney back then. There were hotties (stolen or "hot" cars) in the area all the time. WRXs, RS Turbos, GTRs, Porsches, you name it. What's left unsaid in this story, is that it was all because of how hard heroin Sydney. The Viet boys in Cabramatta were making millions, and every inner city crim was out there terrorising the city. It never stopped in the early GC8 Ram Raid days though. They ended up moving on to Armaguards. My cousin got arrested in a $6 million dollar armed robbery. Sydney was off tap back then.

@@Vincent_Cherron Absolutely not. Rally Cross is a multi-lap circuit race on half tarmac/ half mixed-surface arenas, with all cars racing at the same time and the first one to cross the line is the winner. For the first several years the WRX was available in the US (before the STi was brought over) it was insured as a little two liter four door commuter car. It took years for insurance companies in there US, and the public, to realize what these were capable of. The WRX wasn’t the first “rally car” to be sold. But, it did blow up in a way most others didn’t. There sure wasn’t a lot of fuss over the GT Four Celica from Toyota a few years earlier (an all wheel drive little monster).

My first car was a 93 1.8L wagon awd 5 speed. I didn't realize the potential they had until finding the rs25 forums while doing research about what car to buy. I read through a lot of the build threads there where people were building the normal impreza into what they call an RSTI. I slowly built mine to look like a version 1 STI clone but never had the money to actually swap it. Set it up for autocross and it did that surprisingly good. Got it with 93k miles and sold it due to it rusting out floorboards at 290k. I figured it would be used for parts but i just saw it driving through town yesterday.

How long ago did you sell it? If it's been awhile that's cool that you got to see it again still running. I'm currently preparing for one of those swaps myself. I bought a 95 1.8 coupe specifically to do the swap. I have a V8 EJ207 with the 6 speed DCCD to put into it. The plan is to participate in my local rallycross and eventually be able to do at least one ARA rally each year.

I bought a WRX in 2017 to see if Subarus were even worth a shit. It was a $27,000 base model. I bought this because I wasn't even sure if the STI was worth the money. At the time I believe they were around $40,000. One of my regrets in life is that I didn't just buy the STI. I live where it snows heavy occasionally. One day, just to see if the WRX was actually a rally car, I drove the car down a dirt road that runs parallel with the freeway. I had ws80 blizzaks on the car at the time, and it had recently snowed- so there was snow covering mud. This was a graded and Flat Road, but the traction was awful for any car. I sat in the dirt and waited for a car to pass me that was on the freeway. I dumped the clutch and let her rip, and I was seriously going 60 to 70 in mud and snow and passing cars on the freeway like they were standing still. It blew my mind.

Almost same here, I bought a brand new 2016 wrx base with the factory short throw shifter. After about $7k in performance mods, it was a beast! The FA20DIT is a much more reliable engine than the EJ, that’s why I chose a regular WRX instead of the STI. I had around 330 WHP.
