When Calls the Heart is an American television drama series, inspired by Janette Oke's book of the same name from her Canadian West series, and developed by Michael Landon Jr. The series began airing on the Hallmark Channel in the United States on January 11, 2014,[1] and, in Canada, on April 16, 2014, on Super Channel.[2]
The series originated from a two-hour television movie pilot in October 2013, starring Maggie Grace as young teacher Elizabeth Thatcher and Stephen Amell as Royal North-West Mounted Police officer Wynn Delaney.[3] In the television series Erin Krakow plays the lead role alongside an ensemble cast.
On March 21, 2018, Hallmark renewed the series for a sixth season. The season premiered with a two-hour Christmas special that was broadcast as part of Hallmark's Countdown to Christmas event, and was to continue for a 10-episode run starting in February 2019.[4] However, due to the 2019 college admissions bribery scandal involving Loughlin and her subsequent removal from all Hallmark properties, the season was put on a "retooling" hiatus and resumed in May to conclude in June, with Loughlin's scenes edited out.
When Calls the Heart tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high-society life. She receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal-mining town in Western Canada which is located just south of Robb, Alberta. There, life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Royal North-West Mounted Police Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing). He believes Thatcher's wealthy father has doomed the lawman's career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate's daughter. Wishing to thrive in this 1910 coal town, Elizabeth must learn the ways of the Canadian frontier.[9]
Abigail Stanton's (Lori Loughlin) husband (the foreman of the mine), her only son, and 45 other miners, were killed in an explosion, due to the mining-company site manager's irresponsible management and lack of due care in his management of the mine. The newly widowed women find their faith tested when they must go to work in the mine to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table, and help pay the wage for the town's teacher.[10] The town of Coal Valley was renamed Hope Valley in first episode of the second season after the coal mine was closed.

To be honest why did you writers mess up a beautiful romance and story line with Lucas and Elizabeth to end it to get another story about a Mountie and the Teacher we already had that story and it was about Jack and Elizabeth. Why have that story again? For the record Elizabeth was never inlove nor romantically Interested in Nathan Grant she only saw Jack Thornton in him I mean just one look at him and it's like seeing Jack Thornton all over again why would she be involved, inlove, or interested in a man that reminds her and us too much like Jack Thornton? Elisabeth and Nathan need to marry to give us the Grant family we've been waiting 5 years for already to satisfy their audience. To continue to delay their nuptials may not go over well. The writing and acting were superb in S11. Please don't let us down in S12! Make it happen so your numbers can insure an S13.

I just started watching the series this year and have been catching up on all the seasons and I loved Jack and Elizabeth, they had great chemistry and was broken hearted when he was killed off. Would love to have Jack back cause I'm not crazy about Nathan or Lucas but since it's not possible will see what season 12 holds.

Why would the writers want to hurt Nathan again? The declarations of love between these two means that this love should be everlasting and allowed to flourish and thrive…Now that Lucas’s criminal past has been exposed shouldn’t this be considered as he is the Governor and what or how isn’t his public residence being questioned as he is the governor of a whole territory not just H V. Lucas’s character, and the fact that he has brought extreme danger twice to the township E especially means his past criminality will always endanger the town. Now a question to the writers….why are you writing a criminal character into WCTH to I guess make the show popular, when you refuse to allow Abigail’s character back into the series? Her character was an impecable, Christian character who worked so hard to keep the widows together etc etc and who built the town up from its bare foundations after the great tragedy, yet you favour Lucas’s criminality above a Godly Christian woman who was so beloved.

Totally agree. Nathan and Elizabeth should unite in marriage. I for one am tired of seeing Jack and Lucas scenes. Little Jack will be so confused as to who to believe who is a father. Nathan has shown him what a real father is like. If Elizabeth and Nathan do not marry I will definitely never watch WCTH again. I stopped watching for two seasons but this will be the final for me if they break Nathan's heart again.

@@M.Clark452 Lucas was brought onto the show as a man hiding from his past who, was a professional gambler, bought the saloon over the phone with laundered money and a heap of cash hidden in a box of fish and ice which was no doubt the money he and his side kick Jeanette cheated Amos Dixon of from his ill gotten gains. A man of great mystery yes, and if you think he’s a man who has never committed a crime in HV…well you need to read all of the above and recognise all as crimes, which even in today’s society are illegal crimes.

No matter how much the writers pushed Elizabeth and Lucas kissing scenes, so many of us never felt they were compatible or had chemistry, despite being attractive people. Every scene, every glance between Nathan and Elizabeth shows their chemistry and their connection. Personally, I like Nathan even more than Jack.

I've loved WCTH since Episode 1. Jack and Elizabeth were 'a wonderful couple' and I was devastated when Daniel Lissing left the show. I love Nathan, but have to admit that, for a long time, I held out hope that Jack wasn't dead and 'another' had mistakenly been identified and buried as 'JT', who all along had been very badly hurt, was suffering from memory loss and had been found by strangers who had taken him to a Town, where he was unknown and 'his Mountie garb/identification, 'lost to him'. I know, wishful thinking but it's hard to let go of a beloved character and one half of 'a beloved couple'! Watching episodes again, it's hard not to pine for Jack, even though WCTH has moved on with more great characters. However, Elizabeth and Jack were the core.

I never thought bringing Jack back made sense, but now I'm not so sure. Doesn't matter if Daniel Lissing doesn't want to return, just bring in someone new... it's his personality that would matter to Elizabeth. This could help resolve the issues between the fans. Nathan & Lucas could both have new stories/ventures. I'd also like to see Abigail return (again, bring in someone new if they can't bring Lori...could have great stories with Henry. And Cody, YES, never thought he should have left in the first place. IMO, there's many of the current storylines that need improving, they're getting a bit boring.

They didn't say Jack was coming back just they had information about her late husband but fans has to run with it like they know what the writers are going to do...a cliffhanger is just that you want know until season 12! Erin Krakow said herself in a interview that her and Nathan was the engame!!

Brian Bird said they couldn't have Elizabeth & Lucas get married because their story would 'end'......lame excuse....but it does make one wonder, do they honestly think Elizabeth & Nathan's storyline can continue if they get married because they'll now have '2' kids?!?
