I love that Harriet says "You think of Mr. Knightley for yourself" and "I refused Mr. Martin because of you..." It shows she has backbone!
@ladyhawke24334 жыл бұрын
I don't like her here because her crush is silly and baseless yet she's blind to Emma's own feelings and angry when her bond with Knightley is obvious and exists since years. She shouldn't be so surprised let alone angry. Why she is angry? Maybe because she knows that if Emma wants him she has far more chances than her. The damage Emma did to Harriet is making her arrogant to the extent she thinks someone like Knightley could serioustly marry her.

@@ladyhawke2433 i wouldn't say its baseless. He showed kindness and interest in her and she is naive. When she had other high class people snubbing her and then he was swooping in all kind and handsome of course she might develope a crush and think he might like her in return. Her friendship with Emma had her thinking a bit that maybe she did have a chance. Different views on the character is fine tho

I think Harriett (and Emma too) finally wake up here. You can see it on both faces that their previous naivete has immediately vanished. These marriage arrangements are no joke. It is all women have back during these times. Emma was irresponsible in convincing Harriett she was somehow mysteriously of an upper class background. She has put Harriett at serious risk. This finally dawns on Harriett and you see the shocked look between the two of them. Thank heaven Emma fixed everything and Robert Martin loved her enough to propose again. Because it turns out, Harriett in the end, is the daughter of a tradesman. NOT the daughter of a gentleman. She could have ended up on the poor house.

I did really enjoy the 2020 Little Women adaptation-- it had a lot of bright spots-- but in some ways it wasn't as good as the 1994 one (but in other ways it was better, like in its portrayal of Amy). But I think this adaptation is easily better than the other adaptations of Emma, while Little Women had some tough competition. This adaptation came out during the pandemic which meant that its promotion was more difficult anyways

Harriet is wrong here. 'I refused Martin because of you' means: now you should let me have Knightley. 1) She cannot blame her decisions all on Emma; were you really in love and sure of yourself you'd marry Martin. 2) Her crush for Knightley is baseless while Emma knew him her whole life. She isn't a good friend either because she took for granted Emma only cared about finding her a husband, she overinflated her own crush and Knightley's attentions towards her but didn't see Emma's feelings and the real bond she has with the guy (and one gotta be blind to not see he's in love with Emma). Emma is wrong but this scene doesn't make Harriet innocent either and it's good because it means she is a person too.
@0CheckyesJuliet04 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I would interpret it that way. I heard - "I refused Mr. Martin to be your friend - because you told me you could have no relations with his family. And now you are asking me to refuse this man who I think loves me, for you again". I hear a little resentment in Harriet, which is good, as you say :)
@ladyhawke24334 жыл бұрын
@@0CheckyesJuliet0 Emma isn't asking her to refuse him though, she even tries to support her by saying that if he gave her the impression he loves her it must be true..but Harriet is still annoyed at her ^. Why? I think it's because she's waking up from her delusion that he wants her and she realizes that if Emma wants him, she has more chances. Autumn De wilde gives her more agency but she also emphasizes how limited their friendship is up this point even if the ending is more hopeful than the book. In the book, Austen is more realistic about how doomed their dynamic is because of class differences, so she doesn't really bother calling Harriet out on the fact she may idolize Emma but doesn't really SEE her; discovering she's a person too with feelings and flaws would inevitably create conflict and this movie chose to show that aspect.
@julia.244 жыл бұрын
i think it’s moreso that harriet realizes, if emma is interested in mr. knightley, he is far more likely to return emma’s affections than her own. and this is embarrassing; it reveals to her immediately that she was thinking too highly of her station and let emma’s encouragements blind her. emma is her friend, but there is such a class disparity between them that if they both like mr. knightley, it is clear which prospect is realistic and which is a folly. so she lashes out because she would have been perfectly happy with mr. martin and never in this situation if emma hadn’t encouraged her.
@jjh24562 жыл бұрын
@@julia.24 but Emma didn’t encourage her. Emma told Harriet what Mr. Martin meant to her not to Harriet herself. Emma didn’t advise her either way even though it could look on the surface Emma convinced Harriet to refuse Mr. Martin.

@julia i agree with this. the op comment is very confusing... Harriet is supposed to be a very naive and impressionable character. Emma is her only(?) friend, and why wouldn't she follow what she does especially if she's much more high ranked in society than she is? If anything I feel like Harriet put most of her trust into Emma and appealing to her better nature than whatever op was trying to say...

This scene here.... Even though it deviates from the novel, I feel oddly satisfied that at least once Harriet stood up for herself & said her mind. Reading the novel, I always felt Emma turned Harriet's life upside down for nothing (or rather, to fill the blank Ms. Taylor left in her life) and she got away with it without any serious repercussions. Mr. Knightley always warned her that she was spoiling Harriet, but she never listened and did as she pleased. And when she finally realised it, she kind of dumps her to figure it out on her own. If Robert Martin had already settled in with someone else by then, her life would have been ruined. Because of Emma's naivety/selfishness whatever you may want to call it. I like it that in this adaptation Harriet at least gave her a reality check that it was her who has landed Harriet in this mess. Though I don't like the accusatory tone with which Harriet says that Emma wants Mr. Knightley for herself. That part.... oddly grates on my nerves. She is being so sooo out of line here....but then again it's all Emma's doing 🤦🏻

As usual, the screen-writers/directors think they know better than the master writer Austen and completely ruin this climactic scene, which is the key to the entire story. Harriet never says that Emma "thinks of Mr. Knightly for [her]self". She isn't bright enough to realize that. She takes offense because she thinks Emma's dismay is over her lower class. Until this exact moment, Emma herself never realized she loved Knightly; it was the possibility of his loving another woman that clarified her desire to herself.
@kathleenw69844 ай бұрын
I don't remember this scene well enough in either of the 1996 adaptions, but I like the way they handled things here more than in the 2008 version. In the 2008 version, this scene ends without Harriet having any idea of Emma's attachment to Mr. Knightly, and she even makes a comment "You cannot think that I would still think of Mr. Martin!" and then Emma and Knightly get together without any thought or mention of Harriet, until she conveniently is shown to get married to Mr. Martin. In this movie the whole resolution makes so much more sense, even though it is less accurate than the book.

“Good God”, exclaims Emma in this scene, something no well brought up Englishwoman of this period would have said as it is casual blasphemy.
@a24-457 ай бұрын
Well, you prompted me to do a very quick word check into 3 Austen novels online. Emma does indeed use "Good God!", 3 times in the same conversation in Ch.10 speaking with Mr and Mrs Weston; and she does say it in the exact scene shown above Ch.11, to Harriet. Furthermore, in Ch.18, she says it to Mr Knightley. Marianne exclaims "Good God" in Sense and Sensibility 3 times, and also "Gracious God!" Captn Wentworth says "Good God!" twice plus "Oh God!" once, and Col. Brandon says "for God's sake!" Various lesser characters in Persuasion, male and female, exclaim "God knows!" and "God forbid!" The use of this and similar phrases by key characters doesnt negate your point, it demonstrates that Austen knew that the gentry did break the rules of polite conversation in certain situations. The use of "Good God" conveys to the reader that this is a very private conversation between friends, where rules are relaxed and the characters feel free to speak less formally and more openly. But above all, it underscores a very human response: showing that polite mannerisms and formalities are bypassed when a person is truly shocked.
