CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dressed as a hobo, Sully (Joel McCrea) is shown compassion by a beautiful, but disillusioned young woman (Veronica Lake.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In Preston Sturges' classic comedy of Depression-era America, filmmaker John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea), fed up with directing profitable comedies like "Ants in Your Plants of 1939," is consumed with the desire to make a serious social statement in his upcoming film, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" Unable to function in the rarefied atmosphere of Hollywood, Sullivan decides to hit the road, disguised as a tramp, and touch base with the "real" people of America. But Sullivan's studio transforms his odyssey into a publicity stunt, providing the would-be nomad with a luxury van, complete with butler (Robert Greig) and valet (Eric Blore). Advised by his servants that the poor resent having the rich intrude upon them, Sullivan escapes his retinue and continues his travels incognito. En route, he meets a down-and-out failed actress (Veronica Lake). Experiencing firsthand the scroungy existence of real-life hoboes, Sullivan returns to Hollywood full of bleeding-heart fervor. After first arranging for the girl's screen test, he heads for the railyards, intending to improve the lot of the local rail-riders and bindlestiffs by handing out ten thousand dollars in five-dollar bills. Instead, Sullivan is coldcocked by a tramp, who steals Sullivan's clothes and identification. When the tramp is run over by a speeding train, the world at large is convinced that the great John L. Sullivan is dead. Meanwhile, the dazed Sullivan, dressed like a bum with no identification on his person, is arrested and put to work on a brutal Southern chain gang. With its almost Shakespearean combination of uproarious comedy and grim tragedy, Sullivan's Travels is Sturges' masterpiece and one of the finest movies about movies ever made.

If known the name and look of Veronica Lake (mainly cause of L.A. Confidential), but I never really observed her very well until recently. I just began to realize how drop dead gorgeous she was. Good actress, and think she didn't get the proper role to show her range as an actress. The couple films I've seen her in already are very good. I'm about to see 'Sullivan Travels' soon.

When today's hysterical crowd shame some old actor for having dated a much younger woman, and people defend them with "it was a different time"...this is what they mean. Lake was NINETEEN here. Would anyone deny she had the presence of a fully grown woman? Yeah, it was a different time all right. Maybe social media is rotting their brains or something, but nineteen-year-olds today seem like children compared to this woman. Edit: actually, after watching and reading some stuff about poor Ms. Lake by the 1950s...maybe things ARE better now. Some of the best women I've known hadn't even really come into their own until their mid-thirties. For poor Veronica, it was already all over by then. There's a very depressing interview with her on here, aged 29: she looks, sounds, and seems like, by anyone's standards, a middle-aged woman. Things happened too fast. A beautiful, fully mature-seeming woman by her late teens, old and washed up by thirty, dead by fifty! That certainly wasn't "better."

knuckle head In my opinion the acting is as good as it could be it that movie. There's a reason for the fact that it's considered among the best movies of all time by a lot of critics (I would say the same, but I guess my opinion just isn't as important as the opinion of someone who's a real expert). But of course anyone has a little subjectivity in his point of view on movies. So a lot of people would say that "A Clockwork Orange" is one of the best movies ever or at least in the top 100, but in my opinion it's a piece of shit. So of course no one can force you to like "Sullivan's Travels", but I don't think that anyone can really criticize the acting. In general the acting in the 1940's was different. It doesn't matter which movie you take as an example. All the so called best movies of that time are different when it comes to acting.
@Tetramastbad
@Tetramastbad 10 жыл бұрын
Lincoln2000 I appreciate that the acting in the 19402 was "different", but this still comes across as very amatuerish. Some of my fave films are "oldies" ; "The Red Shoes", "Double Indemnity", "Lost Weekend" etc. The acting is superb in those films. |"Sullivans Travels" just seems too forced for me. I don't really rate "A Clockwork Orange" either. The music is good though.

knuckle head "Double Indemnity" is in fact a great movie and the acting is awesome, that is true; especially Edward G. Robinson's acting was outstanding. I don't know the other two movies you mentioned, even though I know a lot of 1940's movies, but I will take a look at them. Well, I really like Joel McCrea in general. For some reason his charisma transports a very positive and charming feeling/ atmosphere, at least from my point of view. And another thing is that I think that the story ist great, the direction and a few other things about that movie, too, which let it belong to my personal favorites in the end. I find that it's very refreshing (I'm not sure if that's the word you would use in the english language and as you may have noticed my english is not too good), but leads to a few deeper thoughts too. So it is a combination of comedy and drama and also has moments which are a homage to motion picture as itself. As I said before that is a least what I see (said in only a very few words) in that movie. But as I said in my last comment there is always a little subjectivity in what someone sees in a movie.
