Throughout his life, Spencer Tracy was very well-known for his strong anti-racism and many of the words his spoke in this scene actually reflected his real-life views on the subject.

Spencer Tracy died 17 days after the final scene was shot. Never lived to see it released and Hepburn refused to watch it because she said i would make her too sad. And when the film was begun shooting, it was still illegal in 17 states to intermarry.

Earlier in this scene, Spencer was saying something about how his passion hadn't changed, and he gave Kate a very meaningful look, and her eyes well up. That was more than just acting, he was saying to her in that moment what he had been forced to keep secret from the world for decades- his love and passion for her.Knowing that gives this scene a deeper feeling.
@lass-inangeles75646 жыл бұрын
There is credible information that Kate was a lesbian, and Tracy was bisexual. The 'love affair' was a coverup for both of them leading gay lifestyles at a time when societal norms were strict and the LAPD Vice Squad destroyed lives and careers by exposing them to the press. Makes sense. What do we really know about private lives? So the 'meaningful look' you saw may have been a thank you for the cover up.

Lass-in Angeles Tracy was married to someone else throughout the course of their long relationship. That was the extent to which the pair violated societal norms. As such, Hepburn skipped the funeral out of consideration for his family. But it makes the love they had for each other no less real.

Yes. A legendary film. Touching on a subject that unfortunately is still alive today. It was filmed when the Civil Rights movement was fighting one of its greatest battles. Many paid heavy prices for the right to be considered humans. I still remember seeing dogs being thrown at protesters and fire hoses being thrown at people that would sweep them off the streets and crash them into buildings. And this film reminds me of that.

He does seem a bit preachy. This movie, however, dates back to 1967 when civil rights and racial tensions were at an all time high. This was also just after Loving vs. Virginia, and just like Obergefell vs. Hodges, many people were appalled at such a thing as a marriage that is not "traditional." This movie was very much needed for its time to drive the last nail in the coffin on racism and oppression, so to speak. I'm honestly surprised that, after Obergefell vs. Hodges, there was not a movie about gay marriage, and if there was one, I must have missed it.
