I never get over how well done this scene is. The sheer desperation for his friend and anger mixed with all his other emotions lead to rage in Charlie. You never truly experience rage until there is a gap in your memory when your body acts on its own and you wake up horrified of yourself and how you can't remember what you did.

Happened to me after I broke my bullies hand. I was weak and a big coward back then. Easy to pick up , that day I was beaten so bad I got 2 cuts on face , but I just had enough and just started attacking . Took a rock and with full force , I hit him on the elbow like 2-3 times . Later threw stones on his gang continuously. Took 3 weeks for my face to look normal , took some months for his broken bones to heal. Till date that's the biggest satisfaction I ever had

The other part of this scene that gets me is when Brad says thanks to Charlie for standing up for Patrick and stopping the bullies. The way that you can tell Brad feels nothing but shameful for what he allowed to happen, you can tell he truly hates himself for allowing the guy he loves to be hurt like that, and hateful for the way he didn't have the courage to be himself in the moment. But I also love that Charlie doesn't berate or get angry with Brad, he just says accepts his thanks and gives him a reassuring look and a kind smile. Says a lot about Charlie's accepting and kind nature, he truly is an 'observer'.
@xyPERSON
@xyPERSON 6 жыл бұрын
I agree Bec. Also, this scene shows that Brad isn't a bad person deep down but rather he just made some bad decisions like his extremely poor choice in friends. It's real easy to find friends in the world but it's hard to find good friends.

@DrMoistt
@DrMoistt 5 жыл бұрын
I mean, that's the whole point of the novel/movie. That he is a "wallflower" the main point as an observer is that you analyze and understand everything around you even if you're not doing any thing good/bad about it. He knew exactly what was going on and he knew exactly it was his part to step in even with all the homophobic issues going on at that time. ( Not saying im homophobic but just at that time it was a huge thing to hate gays) Charlie knew as a human being this wasn't okay, even during the times they were in. Not tying to disagree with you, just adding onto your point.

I don't think some people who have commented quite get it. Charlie just walked right in and floored all of them. He saw his friend being assaulted and blacked out. No yelling. No posturing. He wasn't frantic or scrambling. Just pure brutal aggression. Ending with the threat to blind them was just the icing on the cake. Nobody makes a threat like that unless they mean it.
@Angelarski
@Angelarski 2 жыл бұрын
People are used to and accept(even if they don’t like) the posturing, yelling, cursing and playing tough. It’s part of the social construct and expected, specially in such fights, focused on psychological domination. Most people accept much harder the cold blooded aggression. It can come without warning and can be(as in this case) extremely destructive in a very short time.

@crowfather3838
@crowfather3838 2 жыл бұрын
@@cassidya5629 could be a mix of both, I think the thought process depends on the individual's perspective but I definitely have been the reserved one who show's people if they think they are violent and tough they don't hold a candle to what's really out there and ends up with a negative reputation afterwards that hindered me through school. Nobody respected me for standing up for myself outside my family until I was an adult and even then I mostly did it without violence because I was tired of drawing attention to myself. That and I didn't even like violence to begin with.

What us scarier is that at the beginning of the film Charlie sees his sister get slapped by her boyfriend. Charlie barges in breathing heavily and his sister has to quickly stop him and push him out of the room. This pain and hatred inside Charlie is obviously so strong he feels he needs to protect others as he could not protect himself.

Did you ever have lunch in a normal school cafeteria? There are either no teachers around because they are on their own lunch break, or they are off to the sides and have to go through a thick crowd of people. The fight wasn't that long, so you can't really complain. Had the fight taken an unnatural amount of time for a teacher response, then fine. Some schools may have a Dean or Disciplinary officer nearby, but my schools didn't. We had the lunch ladies and occasionally the janitors. It was rare to see a teacher stay in the cafeteria after grabbing food.

PirateRadioDude I actually preferred that and the way it was done in the movie was really good imo. I don’t even think it’s necessary to see him beating them up. The before and after are all that’s needed.

This is the best scene of the movie in my opinion. No betrayal is stronger than Brad throwing that word, not that long before he made Patrick leave to keep him safe from his father. To see this kid hate himself so much because of his father and turn that hatred against the one man he was able to be himself with... god.

I know that everyone is saying that he did it because Patrick was his friend but I remember very clearly how he completely dissociated, he blacked out from pure rage, it wasn't even against himself and he simply lost it, that type of aggression was caused by his repressed anger from the abuse he suffered, to losing people that he loved. he went to a truly dark place there.

One thing that always pisses off in movies and tv shows when fights happen is that, when the bully picks on and beats up the people who can’t really defend themselves, then most of the students cheer, but when a quiet kid or someone who keeps to themselves defend someone or themselves then people want to look at them like their crazy. Where was same energy with the bully? This scene always pissed me off because everybody was cheering for the bullies, but when Charlie defended his friend and was able to take down all of those guys then he’s the crazy kid. Wtf
