When the Elders discover that the Mariner (Kevin Costner) is a mutant, they capture him and plan to put him on trial.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Widely considered to be an expensive failure, Waterworld was an epic vehicle for Kevin Costner, who starred in and co-produced the film, with his friend Kevin Reynolds as director. It was based on a 1986 screenplay by Peter Rader and cost an estimated $235 million, more than any film in history up to that time. Costner eventually fired Reynolds and directed the last few scenes himself. The story was filmed in Hawaii, using several artificial islands, and is set in an apocalyptic future, after global warming has melted the polar ice caps and flooded civilization. The Mariner (Costner) is one of the human beings who has adapted by growing gills. The survivalist lives on a boat on which he is growing a precious tomato plant. He tries to sell the plant and its dirt to the residents of an artificial island built of industrial waste. They imprison him when they discover that he's a mutant with gills. But the island is attacked by the Smokers, a group of oil-guzzling raiders on jet skis headed by the Deacon (Dennis Hopper). The Mariner escapes with Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her daughter Enola (Tina Majorino). Back at sea, the Smokers repeatedly attack, using planes and boats, until they kidnap Enola. Enola's back is tattooed with a map showing how to get to Dryland, the last unflooded area on Earth. But Deacon, who needs to get to Dryland to replenish the Smokers' oil supply, can't immediately decipher it.

For all the people complaining that the Atoll villagers chose to attack the Drifter after discovering he was a mutant, they consider mutations as the "undesirables" they want to avoid through inbreeding, along with other things like developmental issues and physical deformities. Even though they live in a world surrounded by water, they still consider themselves human, and they believe mutations are not human. Also, yes, they wanted the Drifter to take the girl as a wife and potentially make children, but they also thought he might travel to different atolls where they could "diversify", so that future generations could come back and add to the gene pool. They grew suspicious when he refused because they had never seen anyone with so much dirt, and if someone who spends so much time in the water refused a mate, it becomes suspicious, because in the world they live in, there isn't much else to live for.

+Heaven Green It did not break even until much later due to video sales and the like. The film itself was the most expensive film at the time of making and its spin off attractions at various theme parks are still running today. There are some absurdities in the film, such as a map tattooed on a poor unsuspecting young girl's back, showing where to find dry land, which, without GPS would be nigh on impossible to use on a flooded earth. It also starred Costner as a mutant adapted to waterlife with gills behind his ears. What about his lungs? People who understand evolution will know that 500 or even a thousand years into the future is not enough time for any major anthropomorphic change to manifest itself (watch out ID'ers!!!) Nevertheless, though I am not a fan of Costner, the mix of Portuguese was interesting if only the apocalyptic past turn of events had taken place during the age of discoveries, but it was a nice nod to all those brave men like Magellan.

@@mantexas9033 How did he devolve? He's a human in pretty much every single way and his body changed to adapt to the world. That's evolution no matter what your mutation is. He can breathe underwater, has enhanced senses underwater, and can swim probably twice as fast naturally as regular people. How he went backwards according to you is beyond my understanding. It's not like he turned into a fish entirely.
