I remember in grade school playing a game against a rival where at half time we were down by almost 15. Our coach was PISSED. He got in there yelling...he was most pissed off that the other team's crowd was controlling the game. They were cheering and we let them affect us. He told us he doesn't care if we win or lose, but one way or another we had to shut them up. We won that game, and their crowd was quiet when we did.

Impersonating Coach Carter by hyping your team up as a coach really helps them overcome their struggles when trailing by a number of points so that you can. get the rhythm and attempt to pedal to a comeback and possibly a victory.

And how it wasn't even the same thing to everybody. He spoke to 5 players and gave 4 unique pieces of advice. The one to Cruz was the most personal I think, since he'd criticized that part of Cruz's game earlier in the movie and threatened to bench him if he did it again. Junior also REALLY needed to hear his part, because Ty Crane was still scoring a fair bit.
@hylash54442 жыл бұрын
@@LucianDevine Junior's advice wasn't even criticism, just encouragement. He basically said "You're doing great, just keep doing that"
@LucianDevine2 жыл бұрын
@@hylash5444 Yup, and it was something he likely needed to hear. Just because Ty Crane was scoring a fair bit didn't mean Junior was failing.

This movie is so great bc it has so many undertones working. One you have these kids at the start who are all self centered, slowly they become a team based in respect bc he gives respect the entire time, not soft respect but actual respect while expecting it back. He makes them “men” and bc of that when he is trying to get them to believe by saying he believes in them they have no doubt it’s true because he’s created that dynamic with his actions and by never lying to them. I mean the actors handled this scene so well bc look at their eyes after that talk like it truly appears they are looking for any semblance of anything other than actual belief and they can’t find it bc the belief is pure. This is what happens when a true team is formed and lead. Plus all the stuff with Cruz in the movie, idk man great movie.
@LucianDevine2 жыл бұрын
@@austinlang6946 The second time Cruz leaves hurts so damn much, but the second time he comes back makes it so worth it. It sucks that his cousin had to die for him to realize it, but when he comes back to the coach, crying and covered in blood, and says he'll do anything, and the coach just takes him back. I doubt Cruz had to do any pushups or suicides that second time, with the coach figuring that he'd suffered enough.

Here’s something my coach told my team once: “It doesn’t matter how many players they have. It doesn’t matter the amount of skill each and everyone on that court has. It’s what’s it there *points into all the players chests* that really matters. If you work and play hard, the stats don’t matter. The win or loss doesn’t matter. It’s the growth and determination you have in the game of basketball that matters.”

I remember one tennis match in my junior days when I was playing so bad, I just wanted to tank and go home. I'm ashamed to say I did. In front of my parents, nevertheless. That night, my father sat me down and told me: If you quit everytime you feel you're failing, you won't get far, not in tennis, not in life. Winning is not only on the scoreboard. Winning can also be pushing forward through adversity and failure. At the end of the day, bad or good, the only thing a man can do is look in the mirror and ask himself: Am I proud of what I did today? So go out there and give it your all. Regardless. In any circumstance. And you'll walk out a winner. And you know what? The next tournament I played the best junior in the country. I got beat 6-2 6-0, but I left my soul on the court. It was the best feeling ever.

I played junior basketball when I was a kid, from '95 to '99, our team was the typical rag tag of rejects... some of us had been playing since the minor categories, and some others came because no other club would take them. we would do GREAT during week training, top notch athletes, nobody would complain during PT.... we'd get to the weekend matches, and the opposing team would still wipe the floor with us. that taught me an important lesson for years to come: the weekend match is won during the week. years later, in online gaming, I would join a clan in an MMO game that would have server-wide events every other week. same deal: weekly training? all synched up, like a chamber orchestra, hat-tricks, multitasking, the whole deal. weekend match? total desertion, people not having a clue where they were, failing to follow orders.... it wasn't until I personally took it upon myself to become _that angry guy nobody would mess with_ that we started doing some damage..... not because WE were getting better, but because any potential enemies were getting discouraged, by watching somebody play so over-the-top aggressive, that they just didn't want to fight us for real.
