Love this movie. I was about 16yrs old and my mom sat me down to watch it. She was a big fan of Lee Marvin. That was 1984. I really enjoyed it. I still watch this movie 36 years later

Reissman sees Franco's intransigence as an opportunity..... As in bootcamp situations, the Major cultivates Franco as a leader in the ranks - in this way, helping to develop cohesion and team loyalty

When they were making this part of the film near Chenies, Hertfordshire, UK, the cast lunched one day in a local pub, the Bedford Arms. My dad happened to be "Lunching" in the same pub with work colleagues. Apparently, at the end of the meal, Clint Walker queried the bill. All six foot plus of him !

Richard Jaeckel never seems to get any credit, but he is perfect as the tough sergeant. WWII vet like the others. So much star power that he gets overlooked, but he really provides the frame in which everyone else can chew the scenery. Great acting job.

I see that they don't like being treated differently, but shaving with cold water really is no worse than shaving in warm water. Now BATHING in cold water is a different story altogether.

@@thomasmarciano6133 Your right. At FT. Bliss Tx. and FT. Carson, CO, In the field, we always shaved in cold water, and this was in the early 90's. To the best of my knowledge, even the 1st Sergeant and the Captain or Company Commander, shaved in cold water.

Richard Jaekel the M.P. joined the mission with the Dozen, he is making sure that they do not desert in action...yet at the end, he joins them in the battle ...he gasped as he watches them die but keeps on shooting. He was wounded but survived with just one member , Charles Bronson as Wladislaw and Lee Marvin as Reisman...the M.P. is counted as one of the Dozen!

I remember watching this movie as a kid in Nigeria in 2001. We had TCM for free on cable and i just randomly stumbked on it. I don't know why but i was hooked! Maybe cause my parents and I woukd watch WW2 documentaries and i also liked Sound of Music. So the film actually appealed to me. I enjoyed it so much

Wow! I watched this in Lagos Nigeria when I was a kid in 1968 or 69 at a movie theater downtown. There was no such thing as cable TV then and the TV only came on at 6:00 in the evening until midnight.

@@bobbyallen7977 Well, in that case, I'd better report in from Calabar. Watched this way back in the mid seventies at the now demolished Patsol Cinema along Bedwell Street. I was still in Primary school and already getting hooked on WW2 movies like Longest Day, Hell Is For Heroes, 633 Squadron. Oh my, those were the days!!! 😅

Franko may not be the nicest of the squad, but he is not evil. Maggot is. Franko is more like a much more edgier version of Han Solo. He may not be soo keen on following orders and tried to desert, he'd never betray his squad. From his perspective, he just want to stay out of the war and feels that it's not his fight.

He's pretty evil. He was in the Mafia although they call it the Syndicate in the film, and killed someone over a trivial amount of money. Reisman expresses some astonishment that a wise guy killed over that.
