Eva confesses that her boyfriend, Paco (Will Morales), was responsible for the convenience store murder.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Assigned the thankless task of teaching freshman English at a gang-infested Long Beach, CA high school, a 23-year-old teacher resorts to unconventional means of breaking through to her hardened students in director Richard LaGravenese's adaptation of Erin Gruwell's best-seller The Freedom Writer's Diaries: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. Her students had been written off, and her chances of succeeding scoffed at, but Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) wasn't about to go down without a fight. Long Beach is a place where a new war is waged with each passing day, and when the hardened students who walk those dangerous hallways sense an outsider attempting to understand their plight, their cynical resentment threatens to keep a deadly cycle in motion. Despite the initially hostile reaction she receives in the classroom, Gruwell uses the writings of Anne Frank and Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo to teach her students not only the basis of the English language, but compassion and tolerance as well. PixieSpells Yes I am going to be little every single situation that comes from fiction, because it is fiction not real life. It is a fantasy world. The problem with movies, tv, and the news is, for many people it skews their perception of reality. You only need to look at the cult following some hits have, and how people then reference real life situations using it as a base. The reality of day to day life is it's fairly mundane, most people don't pay much attention to the person next to them. Can you learn a lesson from a movie, sure, but you have to take it in context. Watching an hour of hollywoods representation of what these kids life is REALLY like doesn't cut it. Or if you want to get specific 10 - 15 minutes for each of them.

Obviously the right thing is to admit who actually did the crime...but doing that while you're in the hood and have gang affiliations can kill you. There's no such thing as the right thing in gang crime, it's all about protecting your own and turning a blind eye. I used to live in the hood and whenever these types of crimes occurred, no one gave any info to the cops, even if they saw everything. Because if they did, they could find themselves and their whole family killed the next day.

That's what I believe too, but the movie never specified 🥺 the thing I remember from it is that her father didn't want to see her anymore, and due to the circumstances Eva had to live with her aunt ☹ I'm still making theories on the reasons why her mom didn't leave with her, but the one that makes more sense is that she had to stay there because she's the wife of the major gangster in prison, so the gang has to protect her 💔 and I guess that's part of the crying too, because she couldn't leave even if she wanted to.

But she matured and realized that she'd be no better than the man who sent her dad to jail. And that boy had a family and she knows that feeling they're feeling and she wanted to be better. So she did the mature thing and fixed her mistake. It's life. It happens. For some ppl, when you're taught one specific thing your whole life and it's been enforced in your head and you were told you HAVE to follow it, and then someone or something else comes along and challenges your belief and you're given a life test to choose between belief and right/wrong, that's a tough decision. It's the end choice you make that matters. The choices you made in the past matters but your ending choice that can change your life forever is what's the main and most important choice. Everyone makes choices that land them in touch situations, it's all about how you end up handling it and doing what's right/best. Eva fixed her mistake. And her life changed for the better.

Rainey156 In a previous scene the man you see being prosecuted was arrested for the shooting of a man he did not kill. (Sorry, don't remember their names. He was the brother or friend of the Asian family you see sitting in court). In an even previous scene the man being prosecuted and Paco, the man at 0:52, were in a physical altercation. In the heat of the moment from bitterness he pulled out a gun when they were at the gas station and tried to kill the man being prosecuted. He fired several shots; however, he ended up killing another man instead. Eva, who was considered to have witnessed the crime claimed it was the African-American that killed him, when it's evinced in the film that it was her boyfriend, Paco. (In a court of law, if a witness has no intention of malice, their statement is considered evidence). After several reality checks through out the film she realizes it's time to do the right thing and be truthful about what really occurred and what she saw. After seeing everyone's family and the negative effects her life had caused, she was finally honest and told the courtroom that Paco was the man who actually killed him. Woo. Sorry if some of that doesn't make sense. It's 11:30pm at night; I'm exhausted and refuse to proofread.

Her attempts to teach Eva were always getting through, it is why she was so adversarial. On the one part, she is an ingrained part of the gang life, she is a legacy, on the other half, the things she was being taught resonated with her, and it is confusing and complicated when she feels it should be simple, which makes her angry because its not, and she lashes out at the person she feels is responsible. She is basically at war with herself, battling over what is right, and not knowing which, this is why she yells at her mother before her testimony, she was reaching breaking point about the two mutually exclusive paths she was being pulled down.

I hate the term snitch, it puts other people down over something that is right. And teaching other people that the person who tells the truth is a snitch, it makes people not want to tell the truth because they don't want to be put under the Shame, and creates new consequences of it. She is being honest and she shouldn't be called a rat or a snitch over something that universally is the right thing to do. To be honest about the guilty. its funny i tend to be called like that in a catholice private middle school and i never knew the word snitch was and i simply felt proud of being the other orderly eye for the teachers (i moved in 2015 all the way from southeast asia and boy we are strict to be discipline on our character) so i was naive on the whole smitching culture and i even thought that doe'snt make sense on why people hide such petty truths?.. boy until i heard that history.. it felt so long ago (1990s kids era) but i hope it's lessening with each new generation... on freshman year was the first time i saw a pregnant teen & exposed to seeing a school fight for the first time (i barely seen it back home as it's rare for kids to fight but bot the level of violence in the US where we gotta prepare on school shooting to one time false alarm bomb threat) but this 2021 i seen none of it now maybe in my place but its a small change and is probably happeing somewhere else and all it needs is the kids some support, rationality and motivation to make a dedication of change.

I’ve lived in Southern California my entire life Im Hispanic and the one thing you never do is snitch unfortunately the system is set up in a way that if you do the right thing and tell the truth about a crime in court it will haunt you until you die .... it will follow you through the rest of your life if you ever go to jail and you are Hispanic you’re automatically required to be placed with your own kind and there’s always one main individual that runs your unit - block - dorm and paperwork about and of who you are will be immediately brought to light so if you have ever snitched against another member of a Hispanic gang that is ran by the Mexican Mafia you will most definitely meet your end in jail... and I’m not even in the Gang.. but as soon as I hit county jail I am a resident which stands behind southside Mexican gangs and I am forced to take orders as if I was in the gang.. what a beautiful country we live iland of the free and home to the brave🇺🇸
