She didn't have looks of a model but he saw in her beauty. I guess Rock was a healthy young man who had relationships with women and I suppose some of them were some kind of floozies, some were fairly decent and normal, but he did not pick Adriane for one night stand, he saw that she has the qualities to make him better human being, to elevate him, same as he wanted her to start living as a healthy young woman, and so she did, she blossomed as a woman in his hands. Rock from the beginning knew what he wants and knew that Adriane is a pretty lady, inside and outside.

I've loved the rocky movies so much as a little girl. However, rewtching them as an adult makes me cry. I've always been a shy, awkward, quiet girl. Pretty average looking and never had a boyfriend and gave up on love. The way Rocky saw past what the world and her family labeled her as, and loved her for who she truly was, and never let her negative view of herself make him not want to get to know her, is such an amazing love story. Adrian loved him before he was even famous and he loved her when he saw her at the pet shop and she lived with her alcoholic brother. I thought I had that once, someone who really saw and accepted me, and he was using me the whole time (what's new I guess). I hope I find my rocky one day. no one using each other, no superficial bullshit, no listening to what everyone else has to say. just two souls that fall in love with who they really are and want to be together forever. This is hands down my favorite movie ever

"I tell ya, things get pretty rough in the ring." Rocky is not a meat punching beast here, nor Adrian the beautiful Talia Shire. This is a scene written for two middle school kids (to emphasize their underdeveloped personalities). He is just an awkward boy who talks too much because he's nervous, but is trying his best to show off to the girl he likes. Adrian is the shy girl with low self-esteem who is validated because a boy likes her. The Director knew exactly what he was doing and how he was going to get every person in the world to relate to these two inner-city, poor Italian-Americans who you would not typically have anything in common with. Pure Genius.

It could come across as Rocky being self-absorbed in this scene as he only talks about fighting despite Adrian not having an interest in it, but I think it's the opposite. He recognises that Adrian doesn't really want to talk about herself and is extremely shy so he doesn't pry and talks about himself until she feels comfortable enough to open up, and when she does that he pays complete attention to what she's saying and encourages her to talk without being pushy.

Trivia: they made up the story of bribing the guardian because they did not have the budget to pay for people on the originally planned ice rink scene, much less to insure them. Well, it turned up pretty fine.

I just rewatched this last night and it occurred to me, which I later confirmed, that Adrian and Rocky being the only two in the rink was borne of budgetary rather than artistic restraints - and it makes for a better more naturalistic scene. It’s awkward Rocky went to the rink on Thanksgiving, when it’s closed and being buffed. It’s awkward he’s running aside Adrian and not skating. But it’s also endearing for those same reasons, reinforcing the character’s heart and a wonderful visual metaphor on the crush he was on this woman.
