This is best scene in the movie for me because it reveals the true nature of this tale that Stallone wrote. fremenchips Lol! yep. Paulie's my favorite character in the series. He's so flawed, but so loyal, and when the chips are down, he always does the right thing. I love the part in the first movie where Pauley was trying to get to the ring so he could bask in Rocky's limelight a bit, but he sacrifices that moment to lift the ropes so that Adrian could slip through and be with Rocky in the end. That showed you what kind of guy Pauley really was. And showed just how much he truly cared about Adrian.

Really a great scene. Both men have to swallow their pride and eat a bitter slice of humble pie. Mickey has to admit that he was wrong about Rocky just being a "waste of life," a no good bum. He didn't treat Rocky with any respect before, but now he has to bite the bullet and come to Rocky because Mickey knows coaching Rocky is his last shot at any real glory at 76 years old. Mickey doesn't want to let all his experience go to waste and rot away as a sad old man. Rocky has to admit that he hasn't been living up to his full potential and that even though Mickey was a real dirtbag to him before, he knows Mickey is the best shot he has at making something of himself. Rocky knows deep down he's just being used by Creed and that the fight's really about Creed wanting to glorify himself by beating up some no name chump. For once in his life, Rocky doesn't want to be that chump.

To me, cinematically, the best part of this scene is when the music drowns out any sound and Rocky runs down to the street and you see the two characters in the distance and you know the content of the dialogue between them without hearing any actual words, as Rocky puts his arm around the old man as if to say, "I'm sorry ... I'll take you up on the offer-train me". Because he knows that while Mickey is flawed and should have actively intervened to help Rocky earlier, Rocky hadn't been giving it his all in training to be a fighter and that Mickey was hard on him simply because he knew Rocky had vastly more potential than the level at which he had been performing. That's why he didn't "have no locker no more". In one silent moment, you can see mutual forgiveness of long-held grievances between two figures in the distance, but without a word of dialogue being uttered.

@@utoresa5193 I think what richplayer17 is trying to say is that humanity is about interaction. We were never meant to be alone. I mean it’s ok to want to have alone time and get away but what it means to be human is to know we are not alone and have each other. I don’t think he is being ungrateful at all. Technology is great and it does make life easier. But just because it makes life easier doesn’t mean it makes it truly better. If it comes at the cost of isolating oneself then it is truly damaging us more than helping. And I don’t understand your last point at all. Less drugs? Substance abuse has never been worse in society with growing technology and depression running rampant. Less religion? That makes it even easier for people to not have any understanding of right and wrong or good and evil which clearly exists in this world. So yes this society desperately needs interaction, love, and most importantly God over just the advancement of technology to make life better.

What a screenplay. The layers operating here are remarkable. From Rocky being utterly contemptuous to Mickey's suddenly chummy presence in his shamefully shitty apartment, leading to the subtlety of Rocky not just kicking him out, but avoiding him in his own home. To Micky knowing that he can legitimately help this guy with his wealth of experience in the fight game. To protect him from the vultures and the predators that will appear in the title picture. Which leads to Micky's pathetic attempt to build a 5-minute rapport with a fighter who wasted his potential and whom he's barely spoken to in the last 10 years. Rocky being naturally resentful of this, but then his remarkable wisdom shines through and he realizes that he truly needs what Micky offers. Leading to the touching visual story-telling at the end. Great, great stuff.

Mickey was always very tough on Rocky because deep down he really cared. I truly believe that. He thought Rocky was wasting his life, not living up to his potential and he wanted more for him. That's probably why Mickey kept his distance. He thought Rocky wasn't serious enough about things, that he lacked commitment. Afterwards he realized he might have been wrong. He didn't want to become Rocky's manager/trainer just for money and success. I think he genuinely wanted to be by Rocky's side at that pivotal moment in his life and career. Brilliant scene.

Nope. Mickey thought Rocky was a bum. Rocky even said he went to him 10 years prior. Opportunity brought them together but Rocky really wanted that fatherly mentor which is why he softened and forgave Mickey. We know Rocky has a really soft heart from the beginning when he didn’t beat up Gazzo.

A Masterpiece, every aspect and symbolic meanings. When he said I'm 76 years old and at the same time the toilet flashes... He feels he wasted his life down the pan. Heart breaking moment 😔. Rocky was his last chance....
@SpreadOffensecom5 жыл бұрын
One key factor prior to this was Micky never ignored Rocky.. sure he busted his balls about being a loan shark, fighting bums (ie: Spider Rico), took his locker away for a younger fighter, and reminding him always that he 'had the talent' all these years. Rocky uses this scene to get back at Mick a little in the beginning because Micky always had the upper hand, because he was right and Rocky knew it. But in the end, Rocky liked and respected Micky, and knew he never ignored him.. which is the ultimate sign that someone doesn't care about you anymore. Brilliant writing... I thought the Micky character deserved an Oscar in Rocky II, and amazing performance.

The very last part after Rocky is just standing there thinking , then comes out running after Mickey, and at first he's startled ,but then he puts his arm around him and we have to guess what he's saying, but in that moment is so powerful, then the two shake hands to cement their partnership, but it so much more as it's a father/son thing a mentor/student.. the scene lays it all out...

This is one of the best scenes ever written in cinema. Sly conveys every emotion and reveals so much about the character. The most brilliant part is that when Rocky chases after Mick, we don't hear what is said, we see it. Just like Mick, he's frustrated and inside he's scared, but he's a good guy. He has the heart Mick said he saw in him. It's Rocky's true strength. I have seen this scene countless times but that part always makes me tear up.

What really gets me is the little unsure shuffle Mic does as Rocky runs up to him. Like he didn't know what to expect and was maybe even a little scared of what could happen. I dunno, it just drove home the image that as tough as he was, Mic was also an old man at the end of his rope. It's hard not to feel for the guy, which makes Rocky even more likable than he already is for swallowing his pride.

When Rocky goes after Mickey . . . wow! One of the most poignant scenes in cinema history. The music, the way the camera just lets them do their thing, it's brilliant. They both have to admit they need each other, and that this can be redemption for both.
