To be fair the story took place in early 1997-2002 so it wouldn't be out of the question to assume Johnny 5 was a drone being used to pull a prank and such. Still Johnny five did have quite a rough day filled with rejection, discrimination, along with the lack of empathy and understanding by others. The priest atleast somewhat owed him some semblance of respect even if he doubted he was in fact a sentient machine
@tropicalcatdetective3 жыл бұрын
Did the films state they were set then? I have always assumed that they take place around the time when they were made (in the late 80s.)
@jessealvarez7792 жыл бұрын
I remember a scene where Ben tells Sandy that he wouldn't be able to fulfill a toy robot order until 1993 with his current production capabilities, so I'm pretty sure that the film takes place in or around 1988 when it was released.
@markraimo12832 жыл бұрын
@@jessealvarez779 that's what I was about to say. I think the film takes place the year it was made or the year it came out in 88. That would put Johnny Five being 2 years old. Which explains why he's still child like in many ways and very naive. He's a two year old. When put that way, the treatment he gets throughout this movie is more sad and heartbreaking.
@saberiandream3162 жыл бұрын
Ben says early in the film that to mass-produce with just two guys would take until 1992. So yes, this is set in 1988.

Why can’t those people understand what Johnny’s capable of?
@TheRealShatterGlass2 жыл бұрын
Quite simply, even in the 1980s, it is a bit difficult to prove that a machine is alive. Most machines only do what we tell it to via input. This scene alone shows why some folks would be skeptical that Johnny Five is alive: there are other explanations, such as remote control, that could explain the behavior without having to stretch your disbelief. Hope this helps!
@Dalton_Boardman20002 жыл бұрын
I love how Johnny is later adamant that he has a soul despite the Priest essentially retracting his statements. I'm hoping he gets excommunicated or at least reprimanded after Johnny's citizenship is given thus in hindsight making him unfairly refuse service to a minority.

Perhaps if Fred didn't get himself so carried away in wanting to sell away Johnny 5 after hearing that Johnny 5 is worth eleven million bucks, that terrible thing wouldn't of happened to Johnny 5 from 2:17-2:59 since Johnny 5 promised Ben that he will stay in the warehouse and never come out (even though there's plenty of input for him to see outside since he loves input so much).

@Luu Sapphire I agree. That priest was very arrogant to be angry at Johnny just because he's a robot and then kicking him out of the church. Otherwise maybe the priest must have thought that a human was playing with Johnny with a camera inside by remote control which is why the priest said "no playing games in the house of God" but come directly as a human not by robot on camera with a remote control. When the priest said that, that was weird because I'm sure God loves for people to be playing games. After all, he created games.
@ItsEdboy4 жыл бұрын
The priest believed Johnny to be someone controlling him like a toy. He felt insulted, as if someone was mocking God by playing a joke in “The lords house”. Given time to show that Johnny is alive I’m sure he’d come around too.
@afriendofbean3 жыл бұрын
@@ItsEdboy Yes that's true. The priest must have felt that a human was controlling Johnny by remote control where the priest probably was talking to the person controlling Johnny if the priest really thought Johnny was remote controlled. I guess when Johnny said to the priest "I'm a machine but I am alive", the priest must have thought Johnny said "I'm an alive human controlling a robot" to ask questions for answers. However, when the priest was kicking Johnny out, Johnny should have said "some God loving priest you are talking to me like that in the house of God which you called it, maybe God should punish you for how you are talking to me in his house."

@@markraimo1283 That's true that Johnny can be nice at times but, he has stood up for himself talking to others. For example, on the first film before he became Ben's Jahvari's friend he said to him "Benjamin, leave, depart, exit" which wasn't a nice thing to say. Also here on the second film, he called the two masked robbers as "bad humans" even though they broke into the warehouse and one of them hit him with an axe.

The priest was also a sinner. He shouted and lost his temper at Number Johnny 5. Nobody is entirely perfect.
@afriendofbean Жыл бұрын
@Ross Hendrick That's true. Johnny 5 had a right to say to the priest something like "how rude and unhelpful you are in the house of God when I'm asking for help" since the priest told him not to play games in the house of God where Johnny 5 told him that there are no games explaining that he has questions for answers which the sign said "if you are looking for answers, come in."
@filmsforallnations Жыл бұрын
The priest thought that somebody was operating a robot by remote control and had sent the piece of machinery into the church, because they had done something terrible and didn't have the courage to face the priest themselves. Priests and all religious leaders are there to be 'confided' in.
@afriendofbean Жыл бұрын
@@filmsforallnations Yes, I agree that the priest thought a person was operating Johnny 5 to confess his sins which is why the priest said to the person controlling Johnny 5 (since he thought it was a human controlling him) to come in person (which is what the priest said) as a human not using a robot, tape recorder, etc. However, it wasn't necessary for the priest to say "get out" since that's not what God would appreciate since the priest talked about being in the house of God where the priest could have said calmly, "my son, come back in person instead of using a robot, so quickly take this robot back home and come in person to talk" especially just for saying "get out" to Johnny 5 would be considered as a sin.
@filmsforallnations Жыл бұрын
I guess that nobody is 100% perfect all the time. Even religious leaders with a very strong faith are capable of losing their temper. We are all sinners, but the priest did come across as a little intimidatingly and I doubt a human being would have wanted to go back in there and confess their sins, after being shouted at.
@afriendofbean Жыл бұрын
@@filmsforallnations That's true. Since the priest thought someone was controlling Johnny 5, it was like he was telling the person that he's not welcome at the church when everyone should be welcome at churches (that line was also said on the movie "Home Alone" that everyone is welcome at church) where the priest has sinned when telling Johnny 5 to get out. That's also true, I'm sure after his confrontation towards Johnny 5, everyone wanted to leave and never come back since the priest was making a scene in front of everyone with everyone watching.

@@trampy6936like it hate it, some that is necessary. You have to remember that today gangs aren't just shooting pistols and sawed-off shotguns. Thanks to the black market, these thugs can get body armor, AK47s, and all kinds of hardware that officers may have to deal with. And the best option for them is to be ready and have the equipment to fight back should the need arise. A ballistic vest insert, M4, and a surplus kevlar helmet in the trunk are viable expenses when your goal is to keep your own guys alive when shot hits the fan. There's also the psychological aspect to consider. If you have someone holding up a bank, if the officers arrive before he tries to flee, having a half dozen rifles pointed at the guy might make him reconsider his chances, and surrender without a shot fired. Compare that to if the officers showed up with just a simple Glock and barely any body armor, the perp might think he's got a chance to shoot his way out.
